  • Crashed in Ladakh - 2018 Ladakh Ride

Hello guys, and here is the intro into my version of Ladakh. I guess, it is a bit lengthy. Hope you guys will show some patience to read and enjoy my wording. I am not a good narrator and please bear with me..

    February 2018:

It was a Sunday afternoon, and I was sick with viral fever. I made a visit to the local pharmacist in order buy some pills. Coincidentally I met my friend, Moncy George, who also was in same situation, viral fever. We bought some pills and exchanged few words, from which I came to know about his plans to get Leh’D. That moment, pored some more oil, into my mind which was burning with the idea of Leh from a long time. For a moment all the vistas and roadways just ran through my eyes, and I realized that this time I should make it happen, and I named it ‘The ride that should happen’ .
Moncy’s plan was solid. He had already done enough groundwork and has spoken with some of his friends. He already started preparing himself and his bike for this rider. He had few problems like finding leaves and transporting motorcycles. I had problems at other end of the line, family, leaves, the bike, and literally everything I thought about was some way or other a big hurdle. But I was firm with the idea of ‘The ride that should happen’.

I talked with some of my friends, kept planning and modifying the plans. Meanwhile Moncy got bigger problems and had to abandon the ride . Later through the plan, Amrider had to drop out, and he too was getting engaged . So, the final team of eight was ready and is as follows:
    1. Anu & Saran on CBR 250 – From Chennai
    2. Haris & Hamna on Royal Enfield 500 std – From Chennai
    3. Shafeeq & Shana on Dominar 400 – From Chennai
    4. Jinu on Classic 500 – From Kerala
    5. Yedu on Classic 350 – From Kerala

By this time the final itinerary was also ready. Chandigarh was the starting point, from where we will be heading to Leh via Jammu and then return via Manali. Considering the riding experience of the team, we split the plan so that the ladies will join us in Leh, will continue with us throughout the Leh circuit and will fly back from Leh. Ourselves with the motorbikes will travel from Leh to Chandigarh and then we will fly back from Chandigarh to Chennai. The two folks from Kerala will be starting from Delhi and will join us at Chandigarh and will finish their ride at Delhi.

Even before the above plan was ready, I had a major problem. The problem being the bike. I am using an Yamaha R15, and doing this ride on R15 was fine for me, but not for my wife. She, being an anti-motorcycle person, was reluctant enough to do even the smallest distance on a motorcycle. I somehow convinced my wife, and almost landed on FZ25. But a few days before this decision was made, one of my friend happened to buy a Dominar 400. His words flushed my mind and the availability of ABS at similar price point made me change my mind and go for it. I finally booked Dominar 400 in the month of March.

Once the bike arrived, we had to start preparing it for the ride. I contacted Lluvia industries Coimbatore, bought saddle stays, luggage rack and rear seat back rest. From Trek n Ride, I sourced the rear luggage box, while additional comforting to rear seat was made with Ride on Air. Other accessories like Bolt Charger, Grand Pitstop puncture kit, Air Pump, Rynox Drystack saddle bag, Gods Zeon R1 tank bag also came through. I already had the riding gear, but for rain and cold, I had to buy Jockey thermals and basic rain wear from Decathalon. Protecting the hands from cold was done by sourcing a winter riding glove from Probiker through gearbest.com. I had the idea of helmet intercom, but again the budget was not enough to accommodate that.

The next major problem was to ship the bikes as well as our hotel bookings in and around Leh. I tried lot of sources for both these, kept talking with many people around, and finally, I understood that going by any source to ship the bike has equal chances of being positive and negative. Finally, I contacted Mr. Shankar – VRL Logistics, who operates the shipping of bikes thorough pallets, and located at Hubli, Karnataka. He promised to arrange the pallets here in Chennai on the required date and to make the bikes available at Chandigarh within 12 days. This gave us some confidence and the biggest figure in the trip, Rs. 11000/- (From Chennai to Chandigarh only). The next major hurdle was Hotel booking. Since our plan was so dynamic, I was unable to put money through any online resource. Meanwhile I happened to meet Date a Bike (DAB) team at Chennai. Their lead, Mrs. Radhika had some favorable package. But again, my team was not able to digest their package completely and had to drop. But I thank Radhika for her inputs in planning phase and her support throughout the ride. Incidentally I saw a post form Mr. Bunny (CarToq Magazine) on FB and contacted him. He gave us a package which was approved by the team, and we finalized with the accommodations in and around Leh.

14/07/2018 - Saturday: The previous night was hectic, and I was busy with packing stuff for the trip. I managed to pack all the necessary items. All my clothing in the left saddle bag, and tools and other stuff in right saddle bag. The luggage box contained first aid kit, puncture kit and other quick access materials. It was morning 06:00 Hrs and I called Saran, he too was ready with CBR and luggage. We inspected the bikes for final time, ensured all papers are available, and we started from our flats to VRL Ambattur, Chennai. The distance was around 40kms and I asked Saran to keep an eye on my rear luggage box. Not very late, we understood that there is a problem. the rear luggage box is moving vertically by a fair amount. I quickly contacted Ashwin at Lluvia, and he gave the solution by shipping the support brackets. Saran had bigger problems since he didn’t have the saddle stay itself.

Packing of bikes at VRL was not smooth. Pallets were not good, and we had to hunt for a good one. Saran’s bike went into a good pallet, while my bike with luggage rack was a bit longer than usual, had to wait. The hunt began for a good and longer pallet. By the time we found one, it was lunch time. We skipped the lunch and sat along with bikes and pallet. Finally, the packing boys arrived, the bike was loaded and locked in the pallet. Completed the payment and paper works, we were hell tiered. Soon we were in a cab and started talking with A4 Moto - designs Mumbai for CBR 250 saddle stays and top rack. He gave a timeline of 8 days and we agreed to do the payment.

26/07/2018 – Thursday: It was a busy day at office, and towards evening, me and Saran left office to nearby courier office, to collect the saddle stays and top rack for CBR. Few days back I received the luggage rack support for Dominar. With the last piece of accessory also arrived, we started packing and crashed to bed late in the night. It was around 2 AM, our dear friend, Mallesh, who doesn’t sleep at night, arrived. Loaded our luggage into his i20, we headed to airport. As usual Chennai airport was busy early morning. Without much delay we completed check in and boarded the flight, and our long-awaited journey began.

            27/07/2018 – Friday:

We arrived at Chandigarh early morning. Took a cab and headed straight into our hotel. Thanks to Google map for confusing us, as well as the Uber app, to confused the driver . We reached the hotel and stretched our back for some time. By the time we finished the stretching, it was lunch time. We finished the lunch and booked a cab to head to Ambala. Thanks to the truck strike that was going on, rather than reaching Chandigarh and our bikes were stuck at Ambala. We reached Ambala VRL depot and found that it was flooded. With much effort we crossed the gate and went inside.

There it was, we got relieved, our bikes were safe inside the pallet, with not even a single scratch. Finally unloaded the bikes, got the top-rack support fixed, filled petrol, and we hit the road. Meantime boys from Kerala had a tough time with unloading their bikes form the train. Jinu had mild viral fever, and his Enfield had a brand-new engine. All four of us were on road at the same time, while Jinu and Yedu were ahead of us. The rain too accompanied us. I had carried a rain jacket, which did a decent job in protecting my upper half, while the lower half got drenched. By the time we reached the hotel it was around 6PM, and Kerala boys welcomed us with viral fever and throat infection. Evening, once we finished the dinner, went with tools and started surgery on CBR to fix the luggage rack and saddle stays. Once the job is done, all of us crashed into the bed.

28/07/2018 – Saturday: The D day. Well the plan goes like, Haris will reach Chandigarh by 6.30AM and we planned to start around 7:00AM to reach Udhampur by evening. Along with Haris, Amrinder also came. Yes, Amrinder was not joining the ride, he was on the way home to meet the future. It was around 9.30AM when all of us reached and started tying the luggage on the bike. Inexperienced with the weight of Dominar, I had to crash it to floor while tying the luggage and that was the first of many falls of Dominar. Tied the luggage and ready for the ride, we bid goodbye to Amrinder and headed towards Ambala. We crossed Ambala and headed towards Rajpura, where Saran had some issue with his bike. We took it to nearest service centre and found out that the chain slider has gone kaput. The spare was not available, and we had to head Ludhiana to get one.

Yedu and Saran fired the bikes and reached Ludhiana. Jinu, with his brand-new engine, me and Haris settled into a steady pace and headed towards the same service centre. Haris who was my pillion was our pilot. Thanks to Google map for taking us into the center of a mad traffic jam. Meanwhile rain gods just teased us with a drizzle, and we decided to tease back with Decathalon rain wear. Our response made the rain gods angry and they decided to hold the shower. Traffic jam, with no rain and we all in full rain gear, it was a deadly combination. The rain gear was literally a greenhouse, trapping all the heat inside and not letting even the lightest stream of air inside. It was hot like a furnace and we were cooked like an Arabian Mandi.

Finally, we reached the dealership, again thanks to google map for leading us to the wrong destination. The dealership guys were super excited to see us and started shooting all their excitement. They were sweet enough to guide us to the right place, also to provide us with some refreshments. Fixed Saran’s bike and back on road, it was evening 4.30PM. The roads from Ludhiana was super smooth and we didn't face much traffic. It was serene but we couldn’t enjoy much since the darkness fell in. We gunned the machines and reached Patankhot, by evening 8.30PM, and spent our night at RK Residency.

            29/07/2018 – Sunday:

Since our plan shattered, I had to reschedule the things, so that our arrival at Leh will not get delayed. Saran had another incident which left his clutch lever injured. We applied some M-seal and left it to dry. By the time we finished breakfast the clutch lever was fine and we started to ride. Roads were nice with less traffic. In a short while we crossed Punjab and reached the famous toll gate entrance of J&K state. Crossing the toll gate with first level of accomplishment, our excitement levels went up thinking about the journey ahead. Somewhere near Samba we decided to fill up. We met a kind trucker and exchanged a few words. He shared some prasadam and conveyed blessings from an unknown baba. We reached Jammu and decided to take the bypass towards Nagrota. We took a tea break in bypass, and the rain gods were kind enough to show their mercy during the break time. By the time we finished the tea, rains also stopped, and we started moving ahead. It was around 11.30AM when we found a Royal Enfield showroom on the highway and decided to halt and fix Jinu’s 500. The horn was giving a minor issue, and the showroom guys fixed it in short time. Around 12.30PM we grabbed some engine oil and chain lube and decided to roll on.

We crossed Udhampur and started riding along the banks of Tawi river. The good roads gave up after Udhampur and we were greeted with under construction roads. Being the month of July, there was good amount of slush on the road. In a while, the 9km long Chenani Nashri tunnel showed up, and we ensured the GoPros are in action. It was the longest tunnel I negotiated till date and the experience was good. The tunnel was dusty, and we decided not to stop and invite any breathing issue. This tunnel was another milestone in the ride, and we decided to stop for lunch. My self and Yedu were looking for a restaurant, and at some point, we found one and decided to pitch in. But disaster happened, and we pitched into the ground. During hunt for hotel, I got lost and didn’t judge the surface properly. I was not aware of the slushy surface we were travelling through and coupled with the inexperience of handling a heavy and torquey motorcycle, we had our pre-lunch starter. Luckily the crash guard and saddle bag took the hit and the gear lever got turned by 90 degrees. After fixing the gear lever, we finshed the lunch and relaxed for some time before started to roll. Roads continued to be dusty and slushy, but it didn’t rain.

Traversing more distance, we missed the Tawi river and joined the banks of Chenab river. At some point where the roads opened, we got a good view of the river and decided to stop for clicks. We rolled on and were greeted with a roadblock. There was a landslide and road clearing process were going on. Mean time we saw one old chap holding our neighbors national flag. It is always better to ignore such attitude of people, because we never know what they have been through. I used to read about life across borders. When two nations put a barrier between them and starts to fight, it is not the people like us, who stays far away from the borders, going to lose. The people in those border villages, their lives and families will be torn apart. One of the government will gain, but the people in villages on both sides take the biggest loss.

Moving ahead we stopped for tea. It was the first time since the ride started, Saran opened the Sony cam for shoot. After tea and pictures, we headed towards Banihal, and around 4:00PM we reached Banihal. The hunt for hotel was on and Banihal being a hill lock village, not many options were available. We headed straight to the JKTDC cottage and were lucky enough to set a deal for two bedrooms. The hospitality was nice and the whole ambiance was awesome. We took the luggage and settled into rooms. Yedu was not feeling good. The whole journey from Udhampur till Banihal was dusty and didn’t help his throat either. At around 6:00PM in evening we visited near-by PHC and gave him some medication.

30/07/2018 – Monday: We started off early from Banihal, and the plan was to hit Sonmarg. Yedu was feeling better but decided to settle down as my pillion. The cottage we stayed had late breakfast timings and we decided to skip and move on. Banihal was beautiful. As we rolled though the scenic routes, we were able to witness lot of military movement too. Around 15Kms later we reached Shanti Nallah. This place is a regular halt point for truckers and travelers, especially Baltal travelers. It was beautiful. We were on top of a cliff, with huge mountains surrounded from all four sides. The mountains were green and the whole area had ample supply of fresh water rumbling down from the mountain top. We decided to have a minimal breakfast. One interesting thing, about the dhabha owners is that they didn’t took anything from us. They asked us not to pay, and even if we want, we can drop some in a donation box kept nearby. The amount was for the welfare of Baltal Yathris. Moving on we encountered a snow shed, which I had never seen till then. Crossing the snow shed, I saw a tea shop, and took a break to get some hot water. We bought a thermal flask yesterday during the visit to PHC and decided to carry some hot water for Yedu.

Moving on we were greeted with the entry gate into Kashmir valley, the Jawahar tunnel. Jawahar tunnel runs for 3Kms and connects Banihal to Quazigund. This is an important pathway for vehicle movement between Jammu and Srinagar. Guarded by military for 24X7, sometimes the civilian traffic will be on halt for exclusive movement of army convoy. We were lucky, since we didn’t have to wait. Entering the tunnel, the Enfields played music around and we just enjoyed the creepiness inside. Moving further down, we could see, light at the end of the tunnel. The Kashmir Valley. We entered the Kashmir valley, and was greeted with huge army convoys. There is a check post right after the tunnel, where you will be asked, whether a foreigner or not. If you are a foreigner, you will have to make an entry and go through some ID verifications. Moving ahead, the Kashmir valley was peaceful. The roads widened with diluted traffic. The ride was smooth and uneventful. The sceneries were normal, with roads running through the middle of agricultural lands. At one point we came across a toll booth and decided to take a break. Zoomed through the highways, we reached the outskirts of Srinagar and two things started to increase in density. One was the traffic & the police deployment on highway. We reached at a junction, from where both left and right goes to Srinagar and further to Ladakh. On investigating the map, we found that the left one had much less traffic and runs along the outer rim of Srinagar. We decided to take left and started moving. In short while, the cops stopped us and told us the route we are going to follow doesn’t guarantee an exit from Srinagar. That was an eye opener telling that this is not a usual tourist destination. We took a U turn and decided to navigate the mad traffic. In a little while, we understood another point, that trusting Google map to navigate through Srinagar is a bad idea. We decided to give up the cell phones and started to ask cops for direction. Yeah, and that was the instruction we got from the earlier cop. Cops helped us, at each junction and we made it to Dal Lake. We stopped near Dal the banks of the lake, took some photographs enjoying the beauty of the lake. We skipped the Shikara ride and move ahead.

Exiting the Srinagar city, we stopped at duel station and filled up. The weather was sunny and little warm. Moving ahead the roads were narrow and ran through villages. But the whole texture changed. The contrast of dresses, the skin tone of people, the trees, the sand, the stones, the houses. Everything started telling that you are travelling through a different land. It was beautiful and felt like some cold and remote village in Russia or eastern Europe. After some distance, we crossed the Wayul bridge, a small but beautiful iron bridge, build across the river Sindh. Crossing the bridge, the whole scenery changed again. We were riding in a valley, with mountains on left and right. The road is running along the banks of river Sindh. Roads were nice and smooth. We were able to keep up a steady cruising speed. The ride was smooth, and it was around lunch time. We found a beautiful spot, right next to the river, a dhabha. We parked our bikes, removed some of the gears and let ourselves relax on the banks of Sindh. We ordered some lunch items rice, dal and egg. But the highlight was Kashmiri Kawah. It was the most refreshing drink we had in the entire trip. Finished the lunch, we sipped Kashmiri Kawah all though the photo session. Then something happened to our surprise.

A Maruti 800, came zooming all the way through the highway and halt right in front of us. Some boys, in their early 20s came out shouting in rage, ready to fight and destroy. We had no clue on what is happening. Then we saw a big fight happening, in front of us between, a guy in dhabha and one in the car. From some of my previous experience, this can either be a serious matter or a drama. If it was a drama, then they can distract us and loot our belongings. I managed to alert everyone and get hold of our belongings. We were lucky enough that they decided not to bang into our motorcycles. While the fight continued, we geared up, and with slightest of the chance, we managed to escape from there. Moving further along the banks of river Sindh, an iron bridge came in our way, with letters saying, “Welcome to Sonamarg”. We all were happy and felt accomplished hitting another milestone. We searched around for a decent accommodation, and finally landed in Hotel Barzman.

Entering Barzman, we got another surprise, a puncture. We were lucky enough that it happened in Sonamarg. We settled down into our rooms with luggage and put some effort into removing the tyre from Royal Enfield. There was a puncture shop nearby and we fixed it in no time. It was around 4 in the evening; we got four horses. We decided to take ride to the nearby glacier. Climbing on the horse was a difficult task. I barely made it without falling to the other side. With all riders in the saddle, the horses started to move, of course, along with jockeys. We chit chat with jockeys, understanding the climate and surroundings. They showed us lot of spots on the way, which became the backdrop for many Bollywood movie songs. Then came a situation, where the horses need to climb down a hill. We were on top the hill, on the horses, and all we could see it the steep drop on the other side. The next moment, our horses decided to move their feet along the steep drop of the hills, and it was a scary experience. We were literally hanging from the sides of the hill. But at the bottom, it was a wonderful view. We saw the melting glacier forming a river stream. The water was cold, so was the climate. It was a beautiful evening.
