@nik - hmm... so how much can one go on this kaurik road b4 tibet starts? i think kaurik must be an imp area coz on the distance markers in himachal, kaurik n its distance is always mentioned.
man i really have no idea about the kaurik road. lovemax could probably help you out on that one ...

on the other hand ... if you have a special permit, you go go right upto the china border, after reaching spangmik, 7 km on the southwest shore of pangong tso, you keep riding, there is no road. only rocks flattened because of army trucks. the border is either 40km or 80 km from spangmik. i only went till a little beyond spangmik. didn't have permision to go further.

you can also go upto 45 km before siachen starts. keep riding beyond panamik in nubra valley, and ultimately the army will stop you.

this is the northern most point of india you can visit. i was here!

Bunny - at sumdo : These people give you a permit that you would have to take but then in kaurik u cannot stay as it is all military area.
And Kaurik is the last point on indian teritorry before you head into tibet.
Though nothing special about this place. You can see my pic 355 in photos pasted in

check delhi spiti album + spiti 2.
You can find that 355 pic in spiti2 album.
Happy Planning.. nd U can reach me anytime you want to.... At your previous Query - distance for kaurik is always mentioned because it used to be and still is a existing last point on indian border. Used to be part of old hindustan tibet road.

                        Bunny,

If you can add following to the list of items you will probably be more confident-

                        1. Some dry fruits. in case you get starnded somewhere due to land slide.
                        2. A sleeping bag(weighs approx 1.5 kg)
These 2 thing can help you a lot. In case you can, try taking 3 men tent along that is available in delhi on rent (Rs 20 per day approx ) that you can pitch in if you like a place very much (In case this sounds practicle to you. This weighs 2 kg.

If you are with 2 other friends, this load can be distributed.

Also, try and avoid taking too many cloths. In every corner of India you can get cheap T shirts which are disposable after 1-2 uses. Your windcheater will need a wash after 2 days, try having a trouser of similar stuff, and you have all you need.

If you can, add Chandratal to your trip log. 7 km off road after Kunzum pass.

                        Off Topic-

Just came across this link and appreciated the seriousness of the discussion. These guys know more about Lahaul-spiti region than many of us.

these foreign chaps are pretty clued up.

met this group (during my trip) of guys and girls who were gonna cycle to manali from leh, via tsomoriri. a 2 week trip. the trip leaders had done the same trip, on cycles again, quite a few times. had detailed maps. btw maps of both tsomoriri are non exsitant. but these guys had got down detailed stuff from gps's n stuff.
