            yes it is.. my frnd did a round trip to mangalore recent past.. he said ppl say roads are not good.. but it is actually for 4 wheelers or buses.. when u go on bike u can actually avoid most of the bad patches..
            If u ask me no harm in trying it now..

              Bangalore-Mangalore roads via the route that you are planning to take is in very bad shape especially the Ghats section after Sakleshpur. Even after ghats the bad roads continue all the way till Mangalore. I had travelled over the weekend and this is the latest update

              The other route that you can take is Bangalore- Hunsur-Madikeri- Puttur- Mangalore.

              Again this route is also bad and is more or less equal to Bangalore- Hassan - Mangalore Route.
              Kerala Road Transportation takes Bangalore- Mysore- Virajpet- Kanhangad route. I have never explored this route but other members in the forum might be able to help.

              I have attached few links which might be of your help.

              Bangalore- Kanhangad - Karsargod- Mangalore

              Bangalore- Hunsur-Puttur- Mangalore

              Bangalore- Hassan- Mangalore

                I would suggest this route:

                Bangalore->Mysore->Hunsur->Kushalnagar-Madikeri-Mangalore.

                Route from B'lore to Kushalnagar is in good shape and then you'll encounter some really bad roads upto Sampaje about 35+kms from Madikeri. Then the road tends to get better for a while. Generally a easier but longer route.

                Alternatively you can also ride down on the Bangalore-Hassan-Mangalore route. Its bad but you'll make it here quicker.

                  It is around 400km and takes upto 7 hours.. not sure how the roads are but surely an option better than the normal saklespur route

                    If you dont mind to travel about 70 more KM the best scenic way will be through Bisli ghat.
                    The rout is not good when it come to surface but it is the best when it come to scenic beauty and the traffic is also very low.

                      I heard the Shiradi Ghats (via Sakleshpur) were done up before the monsoon, but I don't how the recent rains must have left its status. Also is the most frequently used route, so there will be considerably more traffic in this route.

                      I had taken Bangalore-Madikeri-Mangalore route in April this year and it turned out to be a pretty fast route. It took me about 6.5 hours to reach Mangalore. In this section roads are bad for the Kushalnagar-Madikeri-Sampaje stretch which in total is about 60kms. But its not so bad that you would be considerably slowed down. Plus there is very little traffic on this route.

                      The 'bad' road state between looks like this...

                      Post Sampaje the roads are pure bliss...

                        Shiradi Ghats were very good before monsoon but due to heavy rains the roads are once again in bad shape. If I remember these roads were done twice. Some of the areas in the ghats are concrete roads but some are not.

                        Shiradi ghats will be complete concrete roads and work will start after the rainy reason is over. Again don't know when the work is expected to be completed.

                          Bangalore -> Belgaum -> Panaji -> Mangalore

                          Serious note, Shiradi ghat got screwed by monsoon but it's fun to ride man..there are sections of that ghat which are concrete that won't be so bad. it's only 30km anyway after that roads were awesome.

                          Else, check the status of Charmadi, then do Bangalore->hassan->Belur->Mudigere->Charmadi->Ujjare->Mangalore.

                              On 22nd i started off from Manipal -- Karkala -- Ujire --- Charmadi ghat -- Kottigehara ---Belur -- Hassan --Tumkur.
                              Its decent route. Charmadi ghat to Kottigehara is very beautiful. I enjoyed the scenery, fog.. its more beautiful than Shiradi ghat. Its a better option for riders from manipal/mlore to Bangalore.
