  • Anyone driven to Kutch/the Dangs/Guj coast?

    Hey all,

I'm planning one of three trips:
(Drive from Ahmedabad, Friday-Sunday both included)
    1. To the Dangs district, Saputara (400km), Gujarat's hill station.

    2. To the Rann of Kacchh, via Bhuj. But that's said to need more days, and that the rann would be dry.

    3. a. To Dwarka, then along the coastal highway to Diu, night/day stay there.
    b. To Rajkot, Sasan Gir, then Diu.
    c. To Diu proper via Bhavnagar.
Diu's about 450 kms from Ahd, and a/b routes routes add about 50kms.

I'd want inputs from junta who've done these routes, and can provide inputs about the track, scenery, do-ability (not more than 3 days), and most importantly their experiences.

    Thanks,
    Hitanshu

    Hi there!!

You have chosen all the good routes to be done in Gujarat....I am sure you have done relatively longer road trips. Just in case...

Some basix - 1. Carry a detailed map of the area.
    2. Get the bike serviced. Unless you prefer to ride solo...take a friend.

    Back to the real thing....
    1. Ahd - Saputara can be done in 3 days flat with a a day in Saputara. The road upto Surat is the usual highway stuff and after that it gets pretty interesting. The ride upto Saputara is comfortable....the roads are decent, last 50ks are hilly and the scenery just beautiful. I did this route in Dec.2002. its a small place though. You can drive down to the Maharashtra border from there if you wanna have good time.

    2. I'll sugggest that you do the Kachchh-Saurashtra region in 1 go. You won't be able to do any of these on a weekend trip anyways.
----Take the backroad from Ahd to Bhuj via Dhangadhra (its shorter) which hits the Bhuj highway near Samakhyali. take a right from Bhachau to hit Bhuj. If you need a glimpse of the greater Rann of Kachchh you can drive upto Khavda- Kala Dungar cos beyond that the entry is not permissible (controlled by the Armed Forces).
I suggest that you do the famous beach of Mandvi - 45 ks from Bhuj.
On the way back from Bhuj you can also do teh famous archaelogical site of Dholaveera. Take a left just before Bahchau--to taje the road to Rapar via Neelpar. From Rapar its about 70 odd ks. Its gonna be worth it.

After that you can take the trip to Diu via Dwarka. From Rajkot take the highway to Dwarka. Unless you are deeply religious, you can skip Dwarka altogeher and take left from Jetpur to take the Diu highwau via Junagadh. I have not visited Gir sanctuary but I am sure its gonna be worth it. Beyond Gir you hit towns like Veervel & Korinaar.
Once you hit Diu and money is not an issue stay at any of the beach resorts. Ofcourse its a free country so you can expect all the good fun.

I am not sure if I have included everything but I don't wanna spoil your fun by not letting you explore these places for yourself.

If you do have any Qs, please revert.

    Have a safe trip....
    Vivek

Thanks Bunny. The travellogue is beautifully put together.
The beauty of Kachchh is that a lifetime is not enough to live and enjoy it. Have spent 2 years travelling the length and breadth of this district. Would love to go back with a new perspective after reading this piece.

              Hi Vivek,

              I travel with maps .. 24x7

Now, we're planning on going to Daman. As for taking a pillion, I'm pretty sure my loaded Caliber won't run as fast.
I have another buddy, who'll be driving along with me. To save days, we're planning on breaking the trip in the middle. Any suggestions on that. I'd reckon it'll take us about 10-11 hours from Ahmedabad.

We're also thinking of biking via Saputara. As in, Moving on 27th evening to Saputara, and starting 3-4 am from there.

What do you think? How practical?

Any suggestions on reducing the time spent (Fri 4am -Sunday 5pm) would be appreciated!

                Hi Hitanshu!
Daman is an interesting choice!! Ofcourse its doable.
You can hit Vapi by lunch time if you start at 4 am and do not take too many breaks. As this is a practically 'on-the-road' trip 24 hours in Daman are good enough.
From Vapi to Saputara there are a few roads that branch off on the way to Saputara, take the first one that could be anywhere near Navsari(Can't recall the exact place, I approached Saputara from the Nashik side). I suggest that you do not drive in the evening/night on the way to Saputara. Make sure that you are in Saputara before it gets dark and as the days are shorter, an early start would be good.
Saputara to Ahmedabad is 8-9 hours again and if there is no urgency to get back by the 1700 deadline you can spend half the day exploring the beautiful forest. Night driving on the Nvasari/Surat to Ahmedabad highway is relatively safer cos of the 4 lane road, though its just a suggestion!!
Overall, I think you can not really do any time reduction on such a short trip.
Be safe and get us some cool pics of the place.

                Vivek
