  • [Your Help]Latest road conditions and weather conditions from Bangalore to Darjeeling

    Hi Guys,

A friend of mine - Aditya Puri is traveling on his very first bike expeditions and has already left Bangalore this morning. Since this is his first exploit, I want to make sure that he is given the latest information when it comes to weather conditions and the state of roads.

Aditya is planning a 5 day trip to get to Darjeeling on his Thunderbird TS. After which he is attending a 15 day mountaineering course followed by a 15 day mountaineering expedition. He would then be riding back to Bangalore. He did mention that he tried getting information from xbhp but he wasn't sure if he got the latest information. As a fellow biker, I thought it is a part of my responsibility to do my bit to help him out on this journey.

I request all xbhp'ians who might have traveled this route or might be living around places in this area to give me a clear idea on the weather conditions and road condition. Also I must mention that he has already set off on this journey, a big deviation from the route will not be possible. Today is day1 of the travel itinerary mentioned below. I will be calling Aditya every evening and updating him based on your input.

The following is his mail that was sent to me:

This is my basic plan, the original. I got 3 spare days in hand. Have to be there only by 17th.

    Day one. tomorow:
    NH4 :blr-kolar-chitoor-tirupati
    get onto nh5 nellore-guntur-vijaywada 633km

    Day 2
Vijaywada-tuni-vizag ganjam - bhuwaneshwar. this is 800km. probably with stop between vizag and bhuwaneshwar.

    Day 3 500km
    Bhuwaneshwar- cuttack- kolkata.

    Day 4.
    rest and service if required.

    Day5 600km NH6
    Kolkata- Malda- siligude- darjeeling

All packed and set here.. will leave in a few hrs..
If u know people who have been on this route, would love to have some feedback and suggestions.

BLR - CCU shouldn't be any problem

      Good roads.

      CCU - Siliguri
NH34 is in slightly bad condition right now about 100kms of road has detoriated due to rains, coupled with traffic

Its best to take a break at Dalkhola and then proceed to Siliguri and Darjeeling

Siliguri to Darjeeling (NH55) is very narrow.

        Thanks Sunny.

thebagchi: Thanks man. When you say CCU, you mean Calcutta? I will give him the input you mentioned.

Once his trip is over, I will upload the pictures on this thread.

Vizag-Bhubaneswar has around 100-150 km of two-laned, villager-infested roads. So plan accordingly. BBSR-Kolkata, again has a really bad strech from Bhadrak to Balasore, about 70 km and dotted with diversions (more than 20 I believe). Rest of the NH is smooth like a baby's bottom.

            Bad patches
            - 93kms between Srikakulam - BBSR (road is good but double lane)
            - 57Kms Bhadrak - Balasore (lots of lane merging, potholes, diversions)
            - Behrampore - Malda (stretch has gone bad, not very bad as it was infamous for once)

Thanks a lot guys for the updates. How is the weather looking?

He is presently at Ongole,AP for the night.

Is there like a 24hour service or break down number for Bullets?

The stretch between Siliguri -Darjeeling (78kms) is a fully hilly greeny stretch .Till Kurseong/Ghoom it will be steep with narrow roads after that steepness decreases. If you plan to do that stretch in the day hours you will see some awesome Vistas. But this route will take no less than 4 hours for mortals because of the innumerable twists and turns.

Darjeeeling would be a bit colder now for a Bangalorean since I have stayed in both the places but nothing unbearable and Darjeeling rarely snows now in winter.Overall climate shouldnt be a problem with some jackets infact would add to the sceneic beauty of Darjeeling. If you have time visit nearby places like Sikkim,Mirik,Kalimpong - I bet you wont be disappointed.

NH34 is too bad and it's a double lane narrow road in respect of other national highway.Best of luck

Aditya made it to Darjeeling last night at 7.45PM without too many issues. Cheers to him to have successfully completed his first ever bike tour. Close to 2600kms had been completed.

Aditya will begin his mountaineering expedition from 18th and will be out of reach for the next 30 days. I will update this thread and ask for your help for weather conditions and road conditions for his return journey. Immediately after which the pictures will be posted. Thanks for your help guys!
