  • Help: Vellore-Pune Touring Query

Hi everyone, I own a Bajaj Pulsar and have to move back to my hometown Pune from Vellore, Tamil Nadu. I have to transfer my bike also and I thought I'd ride it all the way to Pune. I have some queries regarding the route and how to go about it.

Maybe I should give some details about myself first. I'm 26, have been motorcycling for about 7 years, pretty regularly. I used to cover 100 km trips on a frequent basis, and my riding style is quick to say the least. The maximum I have covered at a stretch would be 220 kms from Pune - Kolhapur.

All of this I have done on my trusty 2003 Bajaj Pulsar 150 Classic. I have modified it a little bit in the last 2 months.. plonked in a 220cc Engine, high lift camshafts, 32mm UCAL carb, gearbox and suspension upgrades and the current Pulsar swingarm. I'm mentioning all this to emphasise that my bike has not done any major kilometers since this upgrade. Just finished running in about 700 kms. Runs like a charm, by the way, details will be put on another post.

So now you know the bike and the rider's capabilities and limitations. En route, I have friends in Hyderabad, Kolhapur and Satara, so I'd like to plan my trip on the vicinity of at least one of these places.

I got the following routes from Google Maps. Please advise me on:
    1. Route
    2. Time frame to go about it.

    ROUTES:
    1. NH18 : Vellore - Kurnool - Solapur - Pune
    2. NH13 : Vellore - Hospet - Solapur - Pune
    3. NH4: Vellore - Anantpur - Kolhapur - Pune
    4. ? Bangalore - Kolhapur - Satara - Pune

I don't know how to go about the fourth option, please help me out there.

Ideally I suppose the fourth option is the wisest, even though it might take a little longer. Plus, I can stay with my buddies if need be. But I'm also open to covering the entire journey in one go, which brings me to..

    TIME FRAME
Should I do it over 1 day, or 2 days? I'd prefer a single day journey but if you guys suggest otherwise I'll reconsider.

Thanks for reading, looking forward to your valuable sugestions Take care!

NH4 is the best choice out there, don't trust the routing done by google maps it takes the shortest road by distance need not necessarily be the fastest.

Vellore->Bangalore should be 3 hours trip
Bangalore ->Davanagere should be another 4 hours trip
      if you can still ride
      Davanagere -> Hubli/Dharwad, another 3 hours.

Rest here or push till Belgaum.

Belgaum to Pune can be done easily in one day via Satara and Kolhapur.

The roads after Haveri are a treat to ride fast

As Darthveda said NH-4 is the one to take.

Vellore - Belgaum will be 700km whereas Belgaum - Pune will be 320km. Belgaum is safe bet for staying. The other place is Davengere. From Davengere to Belgaum you will get some roadside hotels but the rooms are in pathetic state and also not sure about bike safety so its better to avoid them.

My take: Start very early and see by what time you reach Davengere and decide whether you wants to push till Belgaum for the night or not.

The 4th option is the least time/effort consuming.. NH4
Also, take the periphery ring road around blr

          +1 on other's..
Start early .. make it to Belgaum ..
Day 2, perhaps you could meet your friends in Kolhapur and Satara on the way to Pune

I do this route regularly and my advice is as follows:

            Day 1: Vellore - Hubli

Start early morning around 4:00am. Cross bangalore by 7:00am before the traffic kicks in. You should reach Hubli comfortably by 6:00pm. Stop overnight. The worst stretch of road is behind you now

            Day 2: Hubli - Pune

Start early morning so you cross the awesome Hubli - Kolhapur stretch in quick time and get past Kolhapur's trafficy bit in the morning when people are still wondering what to do with their lives. After Kolhapur - Satara - Pune is easy.

If you leave Hubli at 4:00am you'll reach Pune by lunch time. Rest and chill out.

You can also do Vellore - Pune non-stop. I have done Mumbai - Bangalore non-stop and it is about the same distance. Will take you 15 - 16 hours.

So I just came down to Chennai from Pune. I did it in a day, but then I had a slightly bigger bike.

For you, I agree with most of the people.
                • Start from Pune.
                • Cross Satara, Kolhapur, Belgaum, Hubli. This will take you morning to evening.
                • Bad roads begin. So either halt for the evening or make your mind to cross. It will be a matter of a couple of hours.
                • If you cross it, you will be slightly after Davangere, from where good roads begin.
                • Start next morning. Cross Chitradurga, Tumkur. About 3 hours.
                • Some bad roads for 30 to 40 minutes and take the NICE road to avoid Bangalore. 30 minutes through that. You'll find yourself back on the highway at Electronic City.
                • From there, pass Hosur, Krishnagiri. Then Vellore. Takes 3 hours or slightly more.

                EDIT:

My bad... I misread the post. I thought Pune - Vellore. Please revert the given plan!
