  • Chasing the Raj: Rajasthan Dec '09 on Thor

    The title says it all...

Thor will be reunited with royalty this December as I cross the northern borders of Maharashtra and Gujarat and enter the desert kingdom of Rajasthan. Planning to do the following route:

    Dec 25 - Day 1 - Mumbai to Ahmedabad
Dec 26 - Ahmedabad to Jaisalmer
Dec 27 - Jaisalmer to Bikaner
Dec 28 - Bikaner to Jodhpur
Dec 29 - Jodhpur to Ajmer
Dec 30 - Ajmer to Deogarh
Dec 31 - Deogarh to Udaipur
Jan 1 - Udaipur to Mount Abu
Jan 2 - Mount Abu to Mumbai

I might want to add a day here and there wherever it is worthwhile and I'll take your expert opinions to work that out.

I need help with the following:
    1. Places to stay in the above cities. Prefer someplace that is SBK friendly. Don't mind moderately expensive rooms if it will enhance my experience of Rajasthan but I'll want to limit my total lodging to 50k total.

    2. Need to identify IOCL petrol stations that sell Xtrapremium along my routes. If this isn't possible - I can compromise with BP Speed. I am pretty sure I won't get 97 Octane anywhere but if I can - please point it out to me

    3. Can anyone tell me what kind of temperatures I can expect during the day and night?

    4. Are there any "problem zones" with unfriendly people/cops along the way? Seeing as I may be traveling alone (someone has PM'd me expressing interest to join in but I'll let them raise their hand here). If I have company - will make things easier but better to be prepared.

    5. I'd like to avoid tourist destinations. Ken has given me some pointers and I'll be reopening my discussions with him soon...nobody better than Ken when it comes to this area of India

    Cheers!

Will be awesome...remember how to use the google document thingy?

Ken - you think I've given myself enough time at the various locations? Please advise if I am trying to blast through too quickly. I wouldn't mind a day or two to just lounge around

Also - will you be around? Will be great to meet up and maybe share a few legs of the journey...and a few beers as well.

Doing Ahmedabad-Jaisalmer in a day and going to Bikaner the next day is cutting it too fast. Not enough time for Jaisalmer. Let me rethink this.

I could help you out with one or two things.

              1. Petrol: Just outside Pokhran, on the tri junction to jaisalmer bikaner and jodhpur, there is this petrol pump. I saw the free riders filling up from there. Should work. Otherwise you will get petrol pumps interspersed far and apart.

              2. Last year i had done something similar from Delhi from 24th to 27th. Early morning can be a bit cold. Otherwise day temperatures are manageable with the gear on.

              3. Rajasthan roads are straight and boring :-P mostly.

Ken - I don't know if you know who HV Kumar is but he has also added some comments on the google document. Would appreciate if you could take a look. His suggestions are in RED color. I am ok if you shuffle destinations around a bit.

My main issue is that on the MT-01 I have a full-to-dry range of 240kms. I would therefore like to find petrol stops every 200km or so to be on the safe side. Gonna google for a map of IOCL, BPCL and HPCL locations in Rajasthan...call ahead and confirm they are open and stocked before I commit to taking the MT01. Otherwise I'll just go in a car (egad!)

Temperatures are manageable, just a bit cool in early mornings and evenings.

One suggestion: There is a Dargah between Bikaner-Pilani route known as "Narhad". Do visit there if you get chance to pass from nearby.

This "Narhad" dargaah is said to suggested by Ajmer Sharif itself for immediate results, and is very powerful and believed by both Hindus and Muslims. It is not a well known and famous place but worth visiting if you pass nearby.
