  • [Photo Feature]: Secrets of Kumaon

This ride happened in November '09. Kunja Khadak is an out of the map, 150 year old forest rest house nestled amongst the unexplored Nainital Forest Division in Uttarakhand. The entire ride was planned by members of BCMT and exclusively participated by them. We were inspired by 60 kph members, who had been there much earlier.

Kunja Khadak is not a town, village or a hamlet, "Khadak" in local Kumaoni dialect means "pass" and apart from the forest rest house there is no human civilization within 30 kms. You have to book your accomodation in advance by writing to the DFO's office in Nainital else the stubborn caretaker wouldnt allow you in! You can also pitch tents like we did, however that will still require you writing to DFO's office. You have to carry your own food and the caretaker will be happy to cook for you. There is not electricity or running water, so you are advised to book atleast 3-4 days in advance as arranging water requires a 48 hour notice to the caretaker.

Airtel works fine, however Vodafone and Idea doesnt.

Shamik, this is wonderful. This is precisely why I have always loved your logs. You seem to find out places "off the beaten track", and that is where the true beauty lies. Your special love for Kumaon is not hidden anymore.

Thanks for sharing it all; and I eagerly await the photographs of rest of the day(s) accompanied by a small log too, if possible.

P.S: You have posted a trip-log here on xBhp after ages. It's real nice to see you posting again!

Gives us an idea of the kind of place where it is located. Even basic amenities need "arranging" for. I'm kind of lovin' it.
