So there I was, ready by 6:30 am, barely able to control my excitement and waiting for the steed which was to get me on my tarmac to heaven. There was not one but three of them, just enough for the six of us, a Bajaj Avenger, a Honda Unicorn and a Bajaj Discover 135. All the bikes having an enormous fan base between them. The Avenger being the only affordable cruiser in India with a screaming P200 engine. The Unicorn an all rounder with a gem of an engine, sublime handling and unparalleled refinement. The Discover with the least cubic capacity and power was wiser than the avenger and unicorn, about 35k wiser on the odometer to be precise.
Having completed the safety checklist all that was left for us to do was a quick fill up at the pump and hit the NH-47 to Pota by 7:30 am. The Avenger immediately got into the groove leaving the rest behind as mere shadows in the rear view mirror. A few minutes of charity and I was able to spot them behind us, so much for group riding then. On taking the State highway to Athirapilly waterfalls we got an appetizer of what was to come. The long, sweeping curves with a landscape that literally takes lives accompanied us for the 30 odd kilometers. The Unicorn did to the miles what a kid does to candy and while the Avenger was in its godly element the Discover was cornering with the agility of an Olympian.
It was a supernova of adrenaline that seemed to last an eternity, probably this is what heaven feels like. A solitary cloud took upon it to allow a drizzle of sorts and convey the trouble the Discover was in. It was realized later that the brake pads of the front disc had heated them so much so that it burned everything it touched including fingers. Fortunately a major accident was averted since the disc did not entirely lock up. The brake fluid was released and the journey was to be continued on the bike sans its stoppie abilities.
Destination is just an excuse, the journey is the reason.
