  • [Photo Feature]: auli: coveted destination or a overrated one

    DAY 1
Everytime I sat amongst a group of tourers more often than not people use to talk about Auli, Everytime I use to visit a biking forum or a touring forum I used to find a lot of threads speaking about auli so finally I made up my mind to visit this coveted destination that kept me silent everytime it was talked about and to find out why is it so often spoken about.

The plan was very impulsive(the bikers itch) left @ 6 in the evening and as many would say it wasn’t the right thing to do but it was amongst those expcetional times when everything just falls into place when you don’t even plan them in advance and take chances.so I left 6 in the evening took the delhi –yamunanagar-roorkee-haridwar-rishikesh-shrinagar-rudrapryag-jyoshimath-auli route. Ya I know its insane why would I take NH-1 to go towars auli , well the reason being my cousin who live in karnal who accompanied me on this trip wasn’t too comfortable travelling alone on the karnal yamunagar route @ night so instead of meeting me @ roorkee I met him @ karnal and rode together. We reachd @ 1:00 AM rishikesh where we stopped for the night. Being kumbh and arnd 1 at night room weren’t easily available so it took us a while to find a room in rishikesh. The room that we got was a rs 150 room for which we ended up paying 350 for obvious reasons.
This might not help people from delhi but for xbhpians from karnal –kurushetra area the yamunanagar road aint the best of the lot and strictly not to be travelled at night atleast not for the first time tourers no street lights a lot of pot holes the only positive was that there was less traffic , but once u complete first 50kms on this road the road gets much better still no street lights but was nt a issue with 220s projector lamps. So once the first 50kms stretch of road was over (not that there was any road) the bike was easily cruising at 90 and the road was almost butter smooth till rishikesh.
Our arrival in haridwar was greeted by a lot decoration and lighting as if they knew we were coming but being less optimistic and applying our common sense we ended on a conclusion that it must be coz of kumbh mela . I have been to haridwar and rishikesh numerous numer of times but its never looked this beautiful ever before. Worth seeing for every Indian I believe and for everybody who missed it I clicked a few pictures as consolation not that it does any justice to wat my eyes say but something better that nothing.

    my couisn ricky aka yogesh

    haridwar all lit up

Crossed haridwar enjoying the beauty and with the wide grin on my face coz riding at night helped me deceive the traffic that I would encountered in haridwar being kumbh (though riding at night is not advisable , this threas should have a parental guidance tag I believe )
So took a overpriced room in rishikesh near the bus stand and slept for the night wondering wats there in auli that its so often talked about .

          Day 2

Next morning we woke up late for obvious reasons and left the hotel only at around 10 in the morning by this time the sun was at its best even the pictures clicked at the fatest of shutter speeds were coming out overexposed and the temperature touching late 30’s, unorgaised traffic polluting eviornment with the gases and sound form the engine and exhaust was such a demotivation this was not the end of the of the bad times the worst was yet to come in form of roads or rather no roads jus pebbles and dust and pot holes which squirrels and rats might call valleys and for all the fooadies here if u realize I have yet not mentioned anything about us having breakfast which means we are still hungry and if you people can emphatize you would understand how it adds to our misery. So its hot a lot of traffic and as we left rishikesh and touched hills there are roads and we are hungry too . so giving up to the conditions bestowed upon us by god or rather I would say humans we give up and sit have out breakfast . nothing special jus the normal bikers breakfast alloo ka prantha and chai. After calmind down our stomach and mind we mentally prepare ourselves to ride these terrains with jus one reason that kept us motivated “that I don’t wana be shut the next time people talk about auli “;-).

But like its said good things happen when you expect the least within in another half n hour of off riding we fond solid black tarmac wide roads good enough for 30 degree bending keeping in mind u detached ur side stands from ur bikes.
There were strectches of roads on hills where my 220 even reached late 90s and at times touching 100km/h (parental guidance :explicit content) though there were small patches of road that can t be called road but off roads but other wise 85% of road after rishikesh till jyoshimath are butter smooth and one can practice enough bending and leaning to come back and brag about it.

Rest of the day is something I would not like to write much about for reasons that people reading might feel jealous and also that are don’t have enough words to express how I felt ripping and bending my bike bike on wide solid black tarmac it was almost like ri was ripping my bike on a race track with amazing curves and bends and adding to it were the amazinf view of the mountain the valley and ganga flowing parallel to the track (even kari motorway does not provide this facility). My bike was easily touching an average speed of 70-75 and going upto 90-95 on a few rare straights. Except for this the day was uneventful , all we did was stopped for lunch a while after shrinagar , tea a while before joshimath and the only thing that could stop me from not wanting to rip my bike on such amazing roads were the views which I had to captue on my camera here are a few of them:

We finally reached joshiath @ 7 and stayed there for the night as the hotel were cheaper and asily available and thanks to ipl season we wanted a room with a tv finally found one for rs 300 only(march is an off season in auli)

Saw the match had our dinner and went off to sleep with the feeling of being so close to something that has kept me sient all this while .... good night ! wid a grin on my face

Nice pics. I would suggest to break the sentences and use full stops and commas appropriately. This would enhance your travelogue.

                          suggestion taken.

@manubhat : bothways i did around 1200 in total , but then i took the delhi yamunanagar roorke route while going and came back via the shorter route ie auli--rishikesh---roorekee--meerut--modinagar--delhi.
So if your are going from delhi and taking the normal shorter route it will be max 1100 kms both ways .
