              Hey I was there too
Though I was a bit dazed, I was riding to Blore, then came back due to some issues.
On the way back I went through Wai > MahaB > Poladpur... and then hooked to NH17 till Mumbai...

The MahaB Poladpur ghats are super insane stuff! If only the roads were better!

                          The Ride:

The first few months of ones life in the corporate world seem exciting and new.Things are different. For the first time in your life there is independence, mainly monetarily. But soon the excitement wears off and we all fall into the dreaded "routine".The feeling of being trapped overwhelms you. You feel the need to break free and do something that is liberating, that brings out the true you.Different people do different things to feel free. This ride was our attempt to achieve what we yearn for the most - emancipation from our corporate shackles.

After my participation in beruoist plan for the weekend was cut short due to some hurdles(read parent's staunch opposition), I spent most of my friday convincing them I could do such a ride and with proper safety it was totally safe to do so. Finally friday night got the permission to go and immediately called up Pawan and Nj(Niranjan). Both of them accepted and we planned to leave as early as possible so as to beat the heat. The destination was chosen as Mahabaleshwar little did we know what fate had in store for us.

                          The riders:

                          from R-L Niranjan(non-xbhp) , Pawan(non-xbhp) and Me.
                          The Rides:

Pawan's Karizma and Niranjan as the pillion and me on my FZ16

First pics of the ride.Leaving in the morning at 5:30

After about an hour and half of riding we reached outside Pen as the sun was rising.

We drove slowly as both of us were experienced riders but not on the highways. Also the narrow roads of NH-17 made it difficult to overtake the larger vehicles. Stopped at Kolad after a couple of hours to have breakfast. The local shanty wasnt much to speak for but offered delicious food which invigorated for the further ride.
Couple of pics at the rest stop.

Moving on from there we stopped just a few kms before the poladpur to click a few pics of this picturesque location.

                          Thats a kingfisher:

                          closer shot of the kingfisher:

                          A particularly cool looking bug

Moving on from the poladpur we moved towards our destination 'mahabaleshwar', the roads were pretty bad and we could only go so fast.Slowly but steadily we made our way, when I spotted a sign saying that "pratapgarh" was only 4 kms detour off our path to mahab. We decided to branch off and see a new place while we were at it.
                          Some info about Pratapgarh:
Pratapgarh is famous for battle of Pratapgarh fought between Maratha King Shivajiraje Bhonsale and Afzal Khan of the Adilshahi. The Marathas defeated the Adilshahi forces despite having fewer soldiers. It was their first significant military victory against a major regional power, and led to the eventual establishment of the Maratha Empire.
The Maratha king Shivaji commissioned Moropant Trimbak Pingle, his prime minister, to undertake the construction of this fort in order to defend the banks of the Nira and the Koyna rivers, and to defend the Par pass. It was completed in 1656.

Pratapgad continued to be involved in regional politics. Sakharam Bapu, a well-known minister of Pune, was confined by his rival Nana Phadnis in Pratapgad in 1778. He was later moved from fort to fort until he finally died at Raigad. In 1796, Nana Phadnis, while escaping from the intrigues of Daulatrao Shinde and his minister Baloba, assembled a strong garrison in Pratapgad before heading to Mahad.

In 1818, as part of the Third Anglo-Maratha War, Pratapgad surrendered by private negotiation. This was a great loss to the Maratha forces, as Pratapgad was an important stronghold, had a large garrison, and could annoy much of the country round Wai.

                          Pics from Pratapgarh:

                          Shivaji

                          The view

A little tourer visiting the fort along with us:

It was sad to see such a beautiful fort covered with stalls selling comsumer goods. There was no fort left to see but only the view from it.

(To come later: the sites at mahab, panchgani and the actual strawberry festival )
