  • [Photo Feature]: 1200kays of pure awesomeness!!! Pondi & more...

    Updates:

    Day 1
    Day 2
    Day 3

    Prologue :

Roomies: Dude its already April and you planning to go to Pondicherry that too via Chennai ...you will evaporate midway

Me : As per the weather forecast mercury would rise max upto 35 degrees and I having spent 4 years in bhubaneshwar(where mercury levels used to hit a crazy ~38-40 degrees in prime summer) shouldn't be in that bad a state. Moreover at this part of country its quite humid which means sweat and if I am riding at decent speeds the air would cool up the body. Makes sense??

    Roomies : WTF ...thats bull-s**t!!!

    Me : Whatever

Thats how the discussions went before we dozed off thursday night.

    Photo-Log :

Day 1 : I woke up sharp at 4:30AM with rest of my roomies in deep slumber. Quickly ran through the usual chores & hurried to the parking lot and cranked up the bike. Left it that way for around 5-6 minutes to get to proper life. Couple of my roomies woke to the sound of the bike and came out to wish me luck. At around 5:10AM saddled up and started rolling. Initially I took it easy on the bike and maintained 40-60kph range for next 15 mins and voila!!! I was already past Electronic city limits. It was still dark and with the 35W bulb I didn't wanna go for any heroics. Hence, kept rolling at 65-75kph max. At that hour with relatively less traffic the sound of wind whistling by was music to my ears. Reached krishnagiri(70kms) in 65 minutes flat.

Pulled over for morning tea. Now, another thing that I noticed on this trip was that tamil-nadu people have started speaking hindi.Funny part was I was trying to explain him in signs that I want a cup of tea when he bowled me over saying : Chai chahiye?? I was like ...WTF

    Butter smooth high-way...

Thereafter I resumed the ride on the butter-smooth highway...The roads are so good that you cant help but RIP...Kept cruising at gud speeds of 80-90kph and short bursts till 120kph max. Reached vellore around 9:30AM and called up Sriram(a xBhpian friend) who had agreed to guide me through chennai to ECR.Sri-Perambudur came in no time and I couldn't help but take a U-Turn to check out the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial. Lots' changed in last 15 years(yeah!!! I was here 15 years ago with parents).

    The assasination point...

Reached chennai around 11AM. Sriram arrived and soon we were tackling the chennai traffic. Now to be honest I didn't find chennai as bad as people out here keep saying. I found it a well-laid city with wide enough roads. Atleast way better than Bangalore. We were on ECR in about 35 mins and I could feel the cool sea-breeze right away...Yippee!!! finally on the ECR. We pulled over at a dhaba for lunch where we had an hour long chat on bikes, work, traffic cops,Pune, bangalore, hyderabad and what not .

    Why so serious buddy

Bidding him farewell we headed in opposite directions. Soon I reached Mahabalipuram. Now this town was really HOT!!! I was dying to get out of my jacket. Payed a visit to shore temple but was dissapointed to see it was under renovation and the rest of the places too like Five Pagodas and all dissapointed me.

Another way to drain in some foreign exchange

With a heavy heart I left the city and headed towards my final destination of the day. By dusk reached Pondicherry and was greeted by crazy traffic . After 12-13 hours of ride that was not exactly something I would have liked but the meagre thought of beach nd beer kept me going.

    Along ECR

    Finally I reach Pondi

Finding my hotel was not an issue coz it was at a prime location. Got my keys and retired to the bed for some rest to the butt . Thankfully it was a A/C room. Had a quick shower and rested for an hour and half. At 8:30PM I headed to the beach.Being just 1km away I preferred walking and I also didn't wanna drink and ride(I never do that). The mesemerizing sound of waves splashing the rocks made me forget all my worries and I sat there for more than an hour and a half staring at the dark sea in action & dwindling lights from the ships/fishing boats.

    Beautifully lit beach-way!!!

    Some friends from bangalore...

Around 10PM I headed to a bar nearby where I met another bunch of bangloreans and we enjoyed beer . Finally around 11:45PM we bid farewell to each other and I headed to my hotel on a auto.Hitting the bed right away is what the doctor ordered for and I was deep into slumber in no time.

Had a long day ahead as lot more places awaited me.What a wonderful day it had been.Meeting new people, visiting some nice places on the way and ofcourse beer & beach. A perfect way to start a weekend.Wish I got more of these often

    Day Stats :

    Distance : 515kms
Hours taken : 13 (Includes 3.5 hours of break)

And you are right about Chennai. Chennai is overhyped for wrong reasons and Bangalore is overhyped for nothing.

                        Day 2 :

                        Updates:

                        Day 1
                        Day 2
                        Day 3

I was riding fast on Autobaan astride the ONE(read R1). Speedo showed a freaking 300kph and it seemed pretty familiar to me.Suddenly I heard the tunes of Kaho na Pyaar Hai(Instrumental) and was taken a back. Before I could realize I found myself lying on the bed in a hotel room. Darn!!! I was dreaming yet again .Yeah that music is my alarm(10 years since the movie released but I love the instrumental part of it). Its my dream to do that speed on Autobaan someday...lets see if my stars favor me

5:30AM : Just 5 and 1/2 hours sleep after the long 1st day was something one should not prefer doing but I had to catch the sunrise. Hence after finishing the usual chores headed to the beach to catch the first glimpse of sun and this is all I got

                        Just before sunrise...

                        Finally sun rises...

I expected more but for better sunrise I should visit some lesser treaded beaches. After the small photo-shoot I headed back to hotel. Caught a quick 1 hour nap and got ready for the days travel. Wanted to keep this day real light and target was Karaikal(around 140kays from Pondicherry). Now to my surprise the climate kinda favored me. It was somewhat cloudy and hence the heat waves were way lesser than the 1st day.

Started off on the nicely laid roads(two way but not that bad a crowd). 25kms later reached a small town named Cuddlore. Headed straight into it to check out the li'l town. It was a nicely laid place with all the basic amenities in place, a beach(they are in plenty down south) and most importantly educated people. Didn't face any language barrier whatsoever. Everyone knows english(atlest understandable) here. Didn't bother to click as I was enjoying riding through the town. Thereafter headed to Chidambaram(50 kays away), the next big town. Suddenly on the way I saw a river flowing and couldn't help but took a turn into a village to check it out.

Time passed and I headed to chidambaram. And this town was where all hell broke loose. Insane traffic with people honking like crazy. Buses, cars, trucks, bikes, cycles everybody tussling there way past each other. Was getting pretty hot in here hence skipped visiting a couple of temples there and got out of the city ASAP. From here Karaikal was around 75kms. Roads were pretty decent throughout with increasing traffic. Was good to see the kind of maintenance of the roads out here. Karnataka govt should learn a lesson(I had a real bad experience while I went to Mangalore).

                        Somewhere on the way...

Karaikal : A well laid port town, located on the Koramandel coast of the Bay of Bengal.Small but has some significant economic importance. It is an ideal place for those who like to seek solitude, leisure and serenity on the shore. With rivers and beaches it is, untoushed by tourists. I may visit this place again around winter. And not to forget it was one of the Tsunami victims. The town had it bad back then and the renovations are underway in full swing. Reached Karaikal around 1:30PM.

One of the tributaries of Kaveri(guess Arasalar) meets sea here. Spent sometime there relishing mother nature.

                        Finally the beach...

The colour difference you see is the point where River meets sea

Thought of having a boat ride into the sea but was running out of time. Was past 3PM when I started back for pondicherry. Now the traffic was increasing but was ok to maintain 60-70kph speeds. The clouds too had made way for sun and was getting hot. With a couple of long halts(so as to let the engine cool as I had already done ~700kms in two days and had another 500 to go before I reach bangalore). Reached Pondicherry tearing through some bad traffic at around 6:30PM and headed straight to bed for a badly needed short nap.

Woke up around 8:30PM and it was time for some beach darshan & beer again(I just love it on trips like these) ...Spent around a hour on the beach enjoying some snacks and ofcourse the cool breeze.

                        Quite busy city...Pondi @ night :

Thereafter it was high-time for beer dose of the day and headed to the bar I went last night(this time alone )...Around 10:45PM thought of retiring when suddenly I saw a person selling candles and straighaway struck me it was EASTER.

                        Cathedral of Immaculate Conception!!!

I always wanted to visit church on some festive day to witness the celebrations. Perfect!!! Bought a candle and headed to the church. Pondicherry, having french roots has a huge population of Christians. Got myself a seat inside the church beside a nice aunty who was patient enough to explain me the whole process as it progresed.

                        The insides :

                        Proceedings...

Special mention about the prayers they have. Its amazing. With all the modern instruments in place the prayers sounded really nice. I kept humming with them although didn't understand a single word(as everything was in tamil). After the celebration was over I headed back to my hotel and retired to bed.

Both the days so far were special in their own way. Learning about the christian culture was an experience of its kind. Absolutely satisfied I dozed off(back to Autobaan, germany)

                        Day stats :

                        Distance : 320kms
                        Time : ~10 hours(includes breaks ofcourse)
