Photos that were posted up on the GIR trip were so amazing that I had made up my mind that I wanted to see LEH and the route to LEH. So now the problem was that I did not have a touring machine. The only bikes that I had were a HH passion and a Yamaha RX 100. So last year as you all know I acquired a RE bullet. And that was starting of a dream come true. Last year as the winters were going to go off. The idea of getting Lehied was being worked out and it started to take a shape. But it was not confirmed if I would be going or not. Had some other priorities. until some days back in May when my touring partner Yogi said that lets go to LEH and then a good friend Gurmukh singh who is moving away from India also said the same thing... everything went quickly
We got all the stuff. That included bike spares. Which were not really used? And some bags and other stuff was gathered and tied up on the bike one day and we were all set to move towards the Land of LAMA.
The Preparation.
The preparation did not really take much on my end. I already had redone the engine like 2 month s back. So no major hiccups. The only thing that I did was get a Pannier, normal tuning of the bike a new chain, the clutch was reworked. And that was all apart from that also added a pair of Blinkers which I am not used to using so they were not put into much use. Oh yes do remember not to go for an oil for winter conditions... just use the normal one that you use in the normal conditions.
The Trip.
It was early in the morning I hadn't had a good sleep for last 2 days as my parents had come to Delhi. And then also had to go to office on the Monday night. We had plans to leave at around 3 AM on the 4th of June. We were 4 to move, Yogi, Atul and Mr. Sardar (Gurmukh). But at around 12 I received a call from Yogi that Gurmukh and Atul would not be going today as Gurmukh's Bike was not serviced. This really pissed me off. Called up Gurmukh and wanted to blast on him but then knowing the reason for this did not really say anything. To add up an official meeting was called which Yogi had to be a part of. This finished around at 3:45. Yogi zoomed rite away at that time from Gurgaon to my place where all his stuff was lying. We gathered everything up and put it on to the bikes and were all set to move. We left Delhi around 5:15 AM. The first problem that we had was a loose Petrol tank that was making weird sounds. So we stopped around near Panipat and saw that the Bolt for the tank was broken so got another bolt and put that on and tightened it properly. Hush goes the sound. The trip was resumed. At around 7:30 AM we got to Zilmil Dhaba in Karnal where we Met Goldie from Karnal to collect the Documents for Yogi's Bike. We had out breakfast there and clicked some pics. Got off from there at around 8:15 Am and then we headed straight down to Chandigarh. Here we met one of my very good pals Jasbir Singh Gill (Jassi). We took a quick shower at Jassi's place. And then headed to Sector 22 for buying the Film rolls for the camera. Came back to Jassi's home and then had some Lunch and some lassie. It was already around 1:00 PM. we were running late for getting to Manali. We left again at 1:15 towards Manali. We had to encounter some traffic at Kurali and Kharad junctions. Getting to Manali seemed to be a Mission cause I had never ridden with so much weight on the bike. Anyways everything was going nice and smooth. We were riding real slow cause it had started raining. We got to SunderNagar at around 5:00 PM I know it sounds that we were real slow. Here at the lake we Met Puneet and ShauryaMOY (Moy). They were also heading towards LEH. We asked them if they would mind joining us for the trip. They had no problems cause the more we are the more is the enthu and fun. We headed towards Manali and had some Lunch at Mandi. After that the sleep took the toll when I was riding I was very very sleepy. There was some kind of a Tunnel that we crossed and I thought that it was all dream. Then I stopped to check with my friends that if there was a tunnel. And realized that there was one and I was not dreaming. So I stopped there and we all had tea so that I can open up my eyes again. Any ways we got to Manali at around 1:00 AM, sorted out a hotel and we went to bed.
Day 2
Day 2 started with a little bit of a Hangover from the Rum we had last night. We had plans to leave around 7 in the morning but putting the stuff back to the bikes took almost 30 minutes for all the bikes. And we were all set to leave by 8:00 we headed towards the Rohtang Pass the first one that we encountered on our way to Leh. This part of the trip was very eventful firstly . Mr. Puneet Lost his bag full of tools and spares and believe me he rides a bullet and this was a problem. And then roughly around 15 Km before Rohtang pass we realized that oil was driping out of Moy’s P 180 and on checking we realized that the stop cock for the oil compartment was missing so here we went for the jugad and made a small cork out of some wet wood and properly screwed it down in to the hole and that was all set for us for the rest of the trip.
Rohtang was one of the dirtiest places that I went through all this trip. The latter part that leads to Grumpoo and Koksar was really nice we took some photos there.
Recommendation: when you enter Koksar have food at the first Dhaba on the right hand side… very nice homely simple food.
After this bit we moved further and then the real fun started there was a patch of road that was real bad and a real big stream that we had to cross. Now regarding the streams I believe that if you have to put your feet down do it because what you will have is just wet feet for some time and that’s all. If you are very concerned about your soaked shoes than do carry an extra pair and also a pair of sandals that are hanging off the sari guard or hooked on the top of your luggage does help. You can always change into them before jumping into the stream with your beloved.
The next stop was Tandi Pull. Here is the last filling station before you get to Leh. We filled up all the bikes. And for the backup I took almost 18 L of petrol that was for me and Yogi. Then got to Keylong where we did not stop apart from a simple bike check which included chain fixing and cable check.
By the evening we were into Darcha here we took a small room that is right beside the River after crossing the second bridge. The sound of the river was so amazing I was out at the bank till almost 1 at night it did get a little bit chilly there but still the whole experience was real nice. The moon was looking from high in the sky. Never realized that one could see so many stars at night with the naked eye… in Delhi you can’t even see 1/10 of the stars that you could see there. I remember my child hood when I used to live in my Village we used to have a clear sky I had a misconception that it was the clearest it could ever be. Wanted to take a photo of that sparkling beauty but my photographic skill did not allow me to do the same.
The life is so simple one would be amazed. No stress no rush nothing. I liked the way the ladies there take care of all of the stuff there. Was not able to sleep all night just had some thing in my mind. But any way early in the morning woke up as the plans were to leave by 6:30 Am. Woke up in the morning at 5 and washed the bike. And now where I met three cheerful dogs. And the main man Sheru the most handsome dog in the whole of Darcha. Hehehe.(as told by the police man). Any ways after the breakfast we were all set leave for the further Journey
