  • [Photo Feature]: A Different Weekend

No rides since the new year eve's ride in Himachal had made us restless and the fact the last one ended in a crash didnt help my confidence either. With the mercury rising and the humidity levels crossing comfort levels in Delhi, an impromptu decision was taken to go for a camping ride over a weekend. A lot of destinations were considered and rejected due to distance, camping site, altitude, etc. factors and finally we had zeroed in on Hatu Peak near Narkanda, Himachal Pradesh.

I had been to Hatu before in 2007 with a friend in April and though its a nice place I never thought of a camping trip there. However, Ashwani Khanna's (from 60kph) ride a week earlier revealed some nice vistas of snow capped surrounding peaks and the altitude of 3300 metres above sea level was good enough for us to go for the ~900kms in 48 hours ride.

3 of us, Veeru, the Misus and self went for the trip and had a great time there. We didnt click any photos on the way to Hatu neither we clicked any while riding back to Delhi. All the photographs were clicked while we were in Hatu.

I'm blown away by the quality of pics. BTW, what is the house shown in the pic? Is that a lonely or abandoned house or you took that for rent but what about the camped tent near to it?
The location is inviting & the crystal clear pictures are adding justice & Thanks for sharing.

Canon Rebel XSi coupled with a 55-250mm it seems. Nice shots there. Did you actually pitch tent up there?

I am more blown away by the fact that in May, Hatu already looks completely devoid of any traces of winter. At that altitude, it is not a very positive sign!

                    Thanks everyone

It rained a day earlier in Hatu, so all the haze was gone and we got clear views of the peaks including Shivling.

We camped there, the tent in the pics is ours and we spent the night in that. The hut that you see is a PWD Rest House which is yet to be furnished and inaugarated.

Hatu gets pretty windy from dusk and by midnight you really feel the chill of gust which lasts all night thereafter. If you intend to camp ensure you have a good enough tent and sleeping bag.

                    Cheers,
                    Shamik

Hatu has always been devoid of any traces of winter by early May. Global warming or no global warming. In fact, Narkanda and the road to Thanesar retains more snow post winter (courtesy the dense tree cover and orientation towards north) than Hatu peak which catches the most sunlight amongst those hills.

Great to see you people combining the two 'adventures' Shamik...riding and camping. The Himalayn peaks in the pictures could only have been caught so clear just after sunrise. Wonderful pictures there. The Hatu vistas has always attracted me for those 'layers' of mountains. The other place thats more spectacular thus is the Tunganath area in Uttaranchal, again just after day-break.
I don't let my motorcycles interfere with my motorcycling...
