  • R15 and Ladakh

    Hey guys,

I am planning a trip to Ladakh this July (3rd to 17th). The itinerary is already planned - thanks to tons of info on this forum . Now, I have come to a point where I can't decide which bike to carry. I own a R15 and I have not doubts about the machine. However, what concerns me is the comfort factor. I know, being a biker, I should not be worried about it , but then since I also have an option of renting a bullet from Manali and then ride on, I have started giving it a thought.

Now, if some of you (i know many of you have done it) have done the ride on R15, do you think its comfortable enough to bypass the bullet? I would appreciate if someone can share their first hand experience about the bike and other factors related to it.

    Cheers!!

Sorry no first hand experience here, but yet I would not take the R15 there for a few simple reasons

Not a comfortable stance to offroad,
Lack of torque in lower RPM
Light RIMs, Smaller wheelbase, lot of plastic parts
Cant be repaired by a roadside mech in an unlikely failure.

Edit: I thought I read you HAVE a Bullet.
Why rent when you have your bike! I know people doing it on Splendours and Ambitions!

One thing, it is no way going to be better than the bullet in terms of comfort factor.

But trust me you would be better off doing it on your own bike!

And plenty of R15's did Leh last year without a hitch. Don't worry too much about other stuff, have a blast.

All the reason on why not to do it on a R15 will vanish once you hit the hills of Himachal, Ladakh & Kashmir!

^^ huh You trying to discourage r15 owners

@diwakar:I think it will be allright with R15.atleast one of xbhpians has done it.

          1 is already coming back.

          1 is enroute.

& 2 more are on their way in a few days.

You will have loads of inputs in 15-20 days time.don't worry.

No no, not discouraging, but when you have an option like bullet that even truckers would repair for you, then why not use it *hides*

Jokes apart, purely suggested as he compared it with another bike.
PS: If I am not wrong, there is a activa up there too :P
              Would you recommend that!

+1 to what Praful and Darkknight says.

Their are plenty of bikers who have successfully got Leh'ed on their stock R15. And believe me, you will be more confidence on your own bike riding to Leh rather than renting Bullet from Manali. so IMO go with your own bike

I know atleast 4 R15's went up there and back in once piece with the butt and back intact last year.

Its only water crossing you need to be careful to not hit the bottom end of the fairing, everywhere else you'd be pretty much okay!

The point @SP sited is true, but doing such a thing in your own bike is a different feel... if i was in your place i have done it on my bike, other things happens its truly fate...

Thanks a lot for the inputs. I know that the R15 can make it anyday to the top and come back safely. But I am rather worried about myself

This year Feb, I rode the machine all the way from Bangalore to Jaipur. All in all 2221.5 kms done in 35.5 riding hours and I was not a bit tired apart from my wrist which started paining a little at the end of 1800 kms. But that was a plain highway ride with comfy roads and stuff. This time, its going to be Himalayas, and most of my friends suggest to take Bullet - just for the comfort factor.

May be If I buy a good pair of riding gloves, it would be all the more fun

PS: I would love to take my R15 to the top. There is nothing beating the satisfaction of taking your own Machine to the GREAT HIMALAYAS

                              To each his own--
but i won't take any track motorcycle to an off-road track,

Nick Sanders tours on a donated motorcycle and i am sure many can do better(or worst, take your pick) as far as off-roading on a track-bike goes in a sponsored motorcycle
