The NH is being relayed at spots but overall its a good road.

Relaying also means that markers, lines etc are missing in most areas, so night riding would be a bit tricky.

Roads till Manor are not in good shape, but not that bad that u cannot ride, it's just that u have to ride carefully avoiding the potholes and broken patches, things get better after Manor and best after Vapi. Roads are straight but be carefull of the truckers as most of the trucks don't have turn signal indicators and don't give any signals while changing lanes.

I rode solo from Pune to Ahmedabad on early december and base on that experience, Mumbai to Surat (Two lanes rode) was OK, due to heavy traffic and falling villages after every 35-55 kms, You need to more careful.

I suggest, you can start your trip early in the morning between 6 to 7 am so you will face minimal traffic on that road

Well I have been to Gujarat in the month of April 2010 i.e. this year. The roads condition was really good. Upto Virar the stretch of road is ok, but onwars it is paradise. Had fun, but as Jiten mistry suggested leaving around 6:00 am in the morning makes sense as later the traffic could be an issue and also the heat would be lesser.

Although I did not go all the way to Surat but did go till Vesma (small village 13 kms ahead of Navsari). In all had covered around 263 odd kms one way in about 4 hours.

Any way guys ride safe, with all the gears on if possible.

Surat is only 183 kms from Thane and it should not take u more than 3 hrs to ride from here..
once you cross Manor which is approximately 60kms from Godbunder road the roads get really smooth to ride on and you can keep a constant 80kms per hour on this stretch.

ride early to avoid traffic, ride slow but long, stop after every 50-70 kms to refresh yourself, drink plenty of water, and in 3 hrs u are in surat...hope u have a road map, else google the same
