  • Q: Bhopal to Delhi on a bike - First Timer - Help!

Hello everyone, as the title suggests, i am planning to go to Delhi from Bhopal on my bike ( 2006 Apache 150, 85,000 kms run ). Can you please help me to finalise the route which i have to take as this would be my first long ride. The only longest ride i have done was from New Delhi to Jaipur to and fro. So i need all the help from you guys which includes what route to take, Where to stop for breaks, and how many kms should i travel at one go before i give my bike some rest. And i have heard lots of horror stories of the Bhind-morena stretch. Please advice me on what precautions should i take while travelling as i would be travelling alone.

I am planning to leave on May 25th at around 4 in the morning so that i can reach Delhi by 8 or 9 in the night. I had a chat with a friend who has been on this route several times and he said that it is easily do-able and i should not worry about the Bhind-morena stretch as i would be crossing that place around 2 or 3 o clock in the afternoon.

As there would be a case for rain too, can you please tell me some tips and tricks to pack my luggage. I would probably use a cramster saddle bag ( colt ) or a big ruksack which i would tie through bunjee cords.

Lastly, what all paper work of the bike should i carry. I have all the necessary documents and the bike is registered in Delhi.

I know there are lots of questions to answer but i would really appreciate if you guys could take out some time and help me out.

PS: there is also an option of transporting my bike through train but i am against it as i had a horrible experience 4 yrs ago when i came to bhopal. And i always prefer riding or driving myself rather then taking any form of publicc transportation.

    Thanks

    Aditya

Thanks Aargee but his best bet is actually the guy who approved his thread. He has done it all the way till Delhi and beyond.

What I can tell you is, as long as you ride between Dewas - Morena in daylight, you won't have any issues. i.e. No issues as long as you do not freak out when the MP registered Truckers push you off the road a few times when the road is 2-laned. Just don't be surprised by it, they definitely will .

There are major towns every 100km and at least 2 minor settlements between each of those 2 major towns, so plenty of places to take that breather. I doubt it will start raining in the next 18 days, but still if you are worried, cover the insides of the top of the saddlebag with polythene bags (the large ones from big bazaar / clothes stores).

Preserve your fuel receipts since they always help you in interstate rides.

For the rest, this should help (We Pune xBHPians follow it).

        Documents
        a. Valid Driving License: MUST have and carry at all times
        b. Bike Registration Papers: Original or Attested Photocopy
        c. Bike Tax Certificate: Original or Attested Photocopy
        d. Bike Insurance: Preferably a comprehensive insurance, personal insurance would be a plus.
        e. PUC Certificate: A valid PUC certificate; especially if touring along with the group to pollution sensitive/monitored areas.

        Safety Gear
        a. Helmet: Has to be in good condition and preferably ISI/DOT certified
        b. Thick Jacket/Riding Jacket: Must have inbuilt armour or external armour is also allowed
        c. Gloves: Must cover vital points like knuckles and wrist. Cut/half gloves not allowed
        d. Knee Guards: Either bionic or regular flex type. Should be worn inside trousers if non bionic.
        e. Riding Boots/Sports Shoes/Army Boots: Anything that covers the foot well.
        f. There is nothing that can better the protection of a full leather suit (if affordable). The preferred and most recommended piece of protection that your money can buy. Not compulsory though.
        Almost forgot, Ride Safe
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Mate, thank you so much for replying. I was very confused regarding the morena stretch as i have heard many horror stories. You completely cleared it .

Now regarding the papers of the bike , i have the RC, Insurance and my valid driving license. I dont have the PUC ( unfortunately there is no PUC checking centre in bhopal ) and i dont have an idea about tax papers ! can you please tell me what these are. Other than that, i have my ID's of Print and internet media of a bhopal based club and also my college ID. I hope i wont need to carry anything else.

Sorry for asking so many questions ! The main reason is that my parents are a bit scared as this would be my first long solo journey and then i have to cross morena. I am confident i can ride but i dont want to risk my life in case anything stupid happens !

          Regards

          Aditya

If you have RC BOOK, then the details of the tax WILL be printed on it; otherwise, if the RTO is old school, then they would've provided you the tax token in form of a paper. Either ways, it will contain the details as from which year to which year (typically 15 years) the tax has been paid

I haven't seen one smart RC yet; I think the validity details should be available behind the card or something. Pls check.

                  Just checked. It says

                  Reg upto : 2021
Tax upto : OTT . Is it ' one time tax '

Lastly , do you think doing 800 kms is possible in one day? I am planning to leave around 4 in the morning , and according to my calculations ( which include breaks in between for rest ), i should reach delhi by 8 or max 9 in the night. What do you think ?

Yes; you might've registered the motorcycle sometimes during 2006 isn't it?

See...that I don't know; that depends upon how much endurance you have.

Like I said before, I really cannot judge how you ride or how much stress you can handle. All I can say is, start a little early as you're going on unknown roads for first time, so that, even if you get delayed due to bad roads or scenic highway photography, you still can make up for lost hours during the broad day light.

                      Hello,

I am from Indore. Nice to see a close bhpian.... The route should be:

                      Bhopal-Biaora-Guna-Gwalior-Agra-New Delhi

The Biaora to Gwalior route is not in great condition so do it in day time. Also, be prepared for the huge traffic jams that this route suffer from due to mid size river bridges.

If riding at night be very careful this route is one of the worst due to bad road conditions and heavy lorry traffic. Nothing as far as security is concerned, I have done this route at midnights (the most dangerous was Guna-Shivpuri section known as Chambal but not anymore).

Just be more cautious in the Guna-Shivpuri section as it is more hilly ride and blind turns are more frequent.

Rest you need only 3 papers of your bike:

                      1) Registration Card
                      2) Valid Insurance
                      3) PUC Certificate (Generally cops don't bother about it for bikes), Ask at petrol pumps or a local mechanic he will tell you where to get it from. You can also get it from your Bajaj SC.

EDIT: 800 kms on this route seems utter difficult. Don't try it because you can't even maintain steady 70-80 kmph on most of this route (80% till MP border). Take a halt at Gwalior or Agra.

                      Thanks.
                      Abhishek.

Thanks a lot for your advice mate. Well i will be riding mostly in the day time as i am planning to leave around 4 in the morning from Bhopal. Do you still think i would need a halt at Gwalior or Agra ? Are the roads that bad ? I thought i could cover the 800 kms in around 16 hours !

And regarding the PUC, will go and chek with the TVS or BAJAJ SC.

                        Regards

If you start that early then you will easily cover up the distance provided you have such stamina to ride for 16 hours, the last 3-4 hours will be the toughest. I did Indore-Pune 650 kms in 11 hours but that was on 600 kms of four laned tarmac + 50 kms 2 Lane.

Roads are bad in some places rest the roads are patched.

Sorry for the Bajaj thingy I thought you got a Pulsar even after having read your 1st post.:P
