  • Planning a Roadtrip to Goa,

    Hi,

I am planning a roadtrip to Goa in mid June. I will be leaving Pune on 9th June and coming back on the 16th.

I am confused between the Pune-Kolhapur-Kagal-Sawantwadi-Goa route or the Pune-Belgaum-Londa-Goa route.

I know that Anshi ghat is pretty bad at times - specially during the rains. And the laterite carrying dumpers ambling along makes it worse.

However, I have never been on the Kagal - Sawantwadi route. Would like some inputs on those.

Please bear in mind that my wife will be riding with me - so I need to take care of basic comforts (for eg: since she is not used to long hours of riding, I will cover the distance from Pune to Kolhapur/Belgaum on one day and the remaining on the next).

    Please advise.

P.S. Moderators - I apologize if this is not the correct place to post this thread. In case you find this thread to be improperly placed, please direct me to the forum it should be moved to .

    Thanks

Your ladywife will have to adjust a lot, as its not that a short trip you're planning. Either ways, take a lot of breaks, and plan properly, while accounting for unseen circumstances too.

Avoid night time travelling with ladies though, is what I say. Plan in such a way that you reach before dark.

If you and your wife are comfortable riding in night then, this is what I'll do:
Day 1: Start in eve from Pune and ride till Kolhapur and halt for night. With a relaxed pace and breaks in between, it will take around 4-4.5hrs. In night the temperature will also be lower than day, so it will be a bit more comfortable.
      Around 230km's.

Day 2: Kolhapur - Nipani - Sankeshwar (turn off NH4 here) - Gadhinglaj - Amboli - Sawantwadi - Mapusa. Though this route is a bit longer than turning off after Nipani, the road surface is better (as per my last ride a month or so back).
Following is the map of the same route.
Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India to Mapusa, Goa, India - Google Maps
      Around 210km's

+1 on what Nav said. Night riding helps if you are accustomed to it.
Me and my wife recently did a night ride from Mumbai to Diveagar on what is called maharashtras most notorious highway.... NH17
At the end of it, she is more keen on joining on longer rides now!

That asides, the only tip that I can offer which Nav didnt mention is that you should try to climb Amboli either with company or daylight as its an eerie place....

Do not make it a rat race, ensure your wife enjoys the journey so if she wants a break, stop. If she wants to click pics, let her do so.. If she wants grab a power nap, let her do so!

I also would suggest you take the "Kolhapur - Nipani - Sankeshwar (turn off NH4 here) - Gadhinglaj - Amboli - Sawantwadi - Mapusa" route. Its safe too. a mix of all type of rods, i.e curves, straights, climbs, slopes..

            Thanks a lot guys..

            Hey, thanks a lot.

We completed the trip - luckily without any major problems.

And we halted at Amboli for the night - wanted to avoid riding thru the ghat at night with a lady. Personally have nothing against night driving.

Will post a entry shortly in the travelogue section
