  • long touring on CVT scooters ?

just a query if CVT scooters (125cc) can bear the brunt of long touring at average speeds of 60 maybe.
won't the engines get overheated ?
also how to tell if an engine is overheated?
couldn't find a better section to ask my query so asking here.
moderators please move to any other appropriate thread if you find..

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

I don't think engines should have problems if you ride constantly at 60, which is a nominal speed any 100cc bike can also handle.

Some say fuelling is a problem, because scooters have tiny petrol tanks of 4-6 litres, but if you keep filling at every station you see, it should not be a problem. I guess highways have a fuelling station atleast every 100km or so.

But would YOU be comfortable ? We have a wego at home and now I know why girls like it. Its small and cramped. I don't think older vespa-clones are that small though, nor is Kinetic Blaze. But on other scooters, I don't know how you would be able to do a long tour. You are better off on a TVS XL 50

good to hear that small engines can bear the brunt of continuous riding..
but you sure the engines won't overheat at those speeds. ?

have heard two stroke engines are not good for long tours cuz the throttle should not be opened for an extended time!

            They certainly will!
If you are doing constantly 60;the throttle response would become spongy and and it does not accelerate(say 60-20-60 Km/H).
You would find high power losses when overtaking and you need to stop for every 15-20 minutes of continuous high speed riding(the overheating period increases as your constant speed at which you ride, increases).
And they are terribly light on windy days;you have your heart in your mouth!
The riding position is terrible(for my Dio at least) and cushioning is bad.
Add to that, the headlights are useless for almost all scooters(you might as well carry a freakin torch!).
I'd suggest that you take a bike.

my vespa lx125 goes to 80 with ease. atleast that's what i heard from other owners. i haven't dared to try on mine yet since it is still in run in period.
the company recommended oil grade is also kinda funny. 5w40.
don't know much about oil thingy but it surely is thinner. not sure how well it will respond to high temperatures.
as far as i know usually the companies in tropical countries recommend for a 20w40.
since the handle bar height is pretty comfortable to me i was wondering if such a scooter could be considered for long touring.

Its not good to drive at higher speeds constantly in scooters. I stressed my Dio once for a 150 km drive with 75km gap interval. Due to the hot weather, the scooter`s engine became rough and even sluggish in lower speeds.

I did bombay kanyakumari bombay, 4000 kms a few months back on my 32 year old yezdi cl2, with general constant highway speeds of 80kmph and with 75 kg luggage without any stress which included 3 days of 600 kms each.i

And I have also done 500 kms one day ride on an old Activa without any strain,

You can ride anything as long as its in good running condition and you are prepared.

Get yourself familiarized with the vehicle and avoid riding in the dark.
I have taken an Access to over 100 with a pillion but even then it was for a short while.
It('s engine) was pretty okay at 50 Km/H for over 50 Km.
I still do not recommend it,but if you enjoy riding it,then go ahead

well if it can reduce the life of an engine then i won't dare to take it for a long tour.
was thinking to drive it to Visakhapatnam from Hyderabad. (760 kms)

It will be very tiring. The sitting position is not meant to carry on for long tours. I have toured about 100-150 kms on Aviator, and be it as a pillion or a rider, it was very tiring as compared to even a 110cc bike like Bajaj Caliber115. So if you are really keen on touring, you can try a few initial trips on scooter and later buy a bike.

Though the space under feet and the dicky of the scooter comes in very handy.

the seating position seems different in vespa. the handle bar is higher than other scooters in the present market.
but yes i will try out some smaller trips first and then judge if it is really comfortable for longer tours.

I have done a 700 km trip on my aviator, with a pillion. Delhi to Ranikhet and back.

1)I took breaks every 40mins or so of riding. I felt that the small wheels of a scooter don't absorb the bumps/road imperfections as efficiently as a bike's big wheels. It will be a little more tiring, but you can take frequent breaks.

                              2) The small fuel tank meant frequent refueling.

                              3) Due to bad fuel from a pump, the fuel-eco and power was drastically reduced. was fine when we refuelled next.

                              4) my personal opinion (others may differ)- for a long ride on a scoot, avoid having a pillion.

I agree with d-man - the scoot can do it, you have to be prepared.
