  • Western Ghats of KA

Plan is to ride on must/most visit roads of Western Ghats of KA.

    Start Date : 15th Aug 2012
Be home Date : 20th Aug 2012 (can be extended by a day if needed)

Home : Chennai (If needed, shall ride and stay in Banglore the previous(14th) night)

Places of interest will be :
    chikmagalur - Mulayangiri,Babhudahgiri,Kemmangundi,Z point
    Kudremukh,Kodachadri,Marvanthe,Murdeshwar,Jog Falls,Gokarna.

The above places are the collective point interest gathered from various threads. I am interested in making it a roundtrip rather than a to & fro route. Need route planning suggestions from those who have done this places before. How is the weather expected during the above said dates. Where should I stay for the day.

Need information on road conditions, accomodation and the places that should be visited for sunrise and sunset(except beaches) etc.

So far did not find a ride partner, so mostly I will be riding alone.

I am no expert and I haven't visited all the places you have mentioned.

This might be useful for evaluating stay options:-

Homestays in Karnataka | Resorts in Karnataka | Homestays and Resorts in Malnad | Malnad Homestays

I've stayed here Stay@matthuga - Reviews last monsoon and found it to be very good.

You can also consider staying in Bhagvati Nature Camp, Kudremukha.

On day 1:cover the first line you have listed under 'places of interest' to conclude in Kemmangudi. I have no idea about stay options here.

On day 2: start from Kemmanagudi and visit, Jog->Kodachadri and camp at Kollur.

On day 3:start from Kollur and head to Kudremukha. Probably you can stay at Bhagavathi Nature Camp near Kudremukh.

On day 4:start from Bhagavathi Nature Camp and ride to Maravanthe->Murudeshwara->Gokarna.

I haven't considered Aug 15th and Aug 20th as you would be making your to & fro journey on those days.

If I were you, I would have gave beaches a miss during monsoon.

It would be raining during August. I don't think trekking is possible in most of the places.

I am kind of negative about sunrise and sunset also because weather tends to be gloomy and cloudy. But if you must, then Kodachadri peak should give you good sunrise view (if the skies are clear). You can probably do this on your day3.

Malnad experts here like phanikar will be able to help you more. Good luck

        Good Luck for your ride.

Some route map i could suggest for your place of preference: Chennai, Tamil Nadu to Chennai, Tamil Nadu - Google Maps

Day 1: Chennai - Blore - Chickmanglur (Stay)

Day 2: Chickmanglur - Kemmanugundi - Places Around Kemmanugundi - Kalasa (Stay)

Day 3: Kalasa - Kudremukh - Sringeri - Kodachadri - Marvanthe (or) Mrudeshwara
        (Stay)

        (Or)

Day 3: Kalasa - Kudremukh - Sringeri - Kodachadri - Jog Falls (Stay)

You have 2 options.. Either take the ferry after climbing down from Kodachadri and reach Jog Falls (By skipping Marvanthe) or Head to Marvanthe and reach Jog Falls while coming back.

Day 4: Marvanthe - Mrudeshwara - Honavar - Gokarna - Sirsi - Jog Falls (Stay)

Day 5: Jog Falls (Shimoga) - Davangere - Bangalore - Chennai

        Good Luck

Would go with the route suggested by Ananth with some small changes here and there.
          1. You can eliminate Sirsi, head to Honnavar directly from Jog falls.

          2. You can try squeezing in Aagumbe, on the return or onward leg when going from Kudremukh to Kodachadri.

3.You can head from Kemmangundi to Tarikere, while going to Jog. on the return/forward journey. there nothing much to praise about the route from Bangalore to tarikere.

          Stay :
You can budget accommodation at all the places mentioned in the map apart from Kemmangundi, where the Horticulture Guest House is under renovation and will unavailable till this November. Most places have temples which provide "Very Basic" accommodation along with food, massive cost cutting there for other places like Jog Falls you can opt for PWD guest Houses which provide accommodation at nominal Price.

Phanikar, Would you not suggest the Sirsi route? I heard the road is heavenly with beautiful greenery on both sides. Or is it Sirsi - Haveri (On the other side) ?

                    Welcome to Karnataka

                    Hi,

This is Sakshar, based out of Mangalore for last couple of years.
First of all, warm welcome for this ride. The route suggestions, as mentioned above, are perfect. A couple of pointers as a regular visitor to these routes:

                    1. Good thing or Bad thing is that the rainfall is pretty less in Karnataka this year. So, riding will be easier, but at the same time you will loose the charm of riding in heavy rain.

                    2. Try investing time in Chikmagalur. Worth it. If possible, try visiting ayyanakere lake (20 kms outside the town). Amazing place for rediscovering yourself.

                    3. Trek to Z point is a must in Chikmagalur.

                    4. A rain ride in Charmadi Ghats and Kudremukh forest is something you should not miss.

Though it should not be a part of your trip, but try avoiding Shiradi Ghat (Sakleshpur) at any cost. Looking at your plan, it will not be applicable to you.

I will be out of Mangalore for my Konkan ride during that time, but do call me in case of any urgencies.

                    Once again, Welcome.
