  • Kerala Green Forest Ride Query

    Hello Everybody.
Need help of Kerala x-bhpians and all guys with a Kerala ride on their "done that" list.
I am planning to do a trip to Kerala this month and need help with the itinerary.I'm from Madurai,TN and looking to ride among the lush Green forested area around Kerala. While I want to go to Waynad after reading all those travelogues,My co-rider is afraid of the wildlife the area,so planned so far to visit athirapally falls via munnar to valparai where munnar is just added to extend the trip.We are looking for 4-5 day trip but can't make it for lack of info on nearby POI.

    My queries are,
1.Is Waynad safe for just two persons on a single bike(as opposed to a group). Please give some Places and cities or hill stations around the area that would make for some 2-3 day ride.
2.If Athirapally is better,I have finalized only the Falls and open to suggestions around the area that would make up as lush green eye-candy for 2-3 days ride.
3.Are Rc book, licence, insurance and Emission papers enough for verification at the checkposts?

Please advice on anything that you deem needed for my trip.

    Regards and thanks,Deepan

Don't worry I'll try to help. I can tell you, carrying a bottle of liquor on a bike isn't a great idea at all. And I assume that you have no intention to visit any places worship either, do you? Vagamon is a very beautiful hill station just about 125kms away from Munnar. Just 60kms from Athirappilly waterfalls is Thrissur, a major town in North Kerala. There are many POI in and around Thrissur including very famous temples.

AFAIK, the conditions are now good for biking and you're unlikely to face any issues if you go for the Wayanad trip. First of all finalise your destination. It will be easier for us to guide you then.

Thank you,raging_bull.So its a big no to liquor then.Anyways,I don't drink,it was my friends biggest doubt yet. I am taking off that question from my post. And I'm willing to visit temples, though not expressly. My primary need is to tour in the winding hill roads in the rain and mist. Speaking of which, could you tell me about the climate in Vagamon and Athirapally this time of the year?I understand from other threads that Lodging is difficult in Vagamon, any idea about that?I will look into adding Thrissur to the plan.

My plan until now is to start from Madurai-Bodi-chalakudy-Athirapally-valparai-pollachi-madurai. As you can see i can make this trip in 2 days. So,I would like visit some place between bodi and valparai.I have finalized only on athirapally And i want to do a 3-4 day trip.It can be anywhere a day ride around these places. Some where off the regular tourist-filled cities. Some less known spots to ride into in the evening and roam around on foot and stay somewhere to enjoy God own country. Its the reason i try to avoid Munnar. so any place between poopara and Athirapally is what i am looking for.

ok... I highly recommend a visit to Thrissur since you plan to visit Athirapilly. It's the cultural capital of Kerala. You may visit Sakthan Thampuran palace situated at the centre of the city. Read more about it here Shakthan Thampuran Palace - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Guruvayoor temple is very famous across India and it's only around 20km from Thrissur. Just a few kms away from the temple is the elephant camp of Punnathurkotta. The famous Vadakkumnathan temple, known for 'Thrissur pooram' is also located at the centre of the city.
I think you should stay for a day at Thrissur. You can visit all the above mentioned places and visit the Athirappilly falls. And my suggestion is you should return via Nelliyampathy. It's a very very beautiful hill station. Exactly the kinda place you wish to visit. Be ready to negotiate a few hairpin curves .

100 kms from Nelliyampathy is the Parambikkulam Tiger Reserve. It's another must see place. Here's a link Parambikulam Tiger Reserve
I think lodging facilities are available at both places.
These are some of the major tourist spots I can think of around that area. Will let you know if I find any more.

That's great advice, buddy.Thank you for pointing out and briefing on multiple locations,Its good to have options. Nelliyampathy sounds good.Hairpin bends make the prospect even more attractive.I have heard about Vadakkumnathan temple before. It is stunningly in the pictures.I just thought that thrissur, being a major business city, would be just like any second tier town But I am going to take your word and spend a day around Thrissur. Now off to start Google research about Nelliyampathy&thrissur.
Again thanks for your time and links to relevant sites,raging_bull.

You're always welcome . In case you feel you have more time and energy, you have an option of going to the Silent Valley national park in Palakkad before going to Nelliyampathy (I think it's difficult to visit both places in a single day). It's another very very beautiful forest range in the Nilgiris, untouched by man. It's around 125 kms from Thrissur. Google it and you'll get some very interesting info about the place including its history.

One place near Thrissur I forgot to mention is the Kerala Kalamandalam. Read more about it here Kerala Kalamandalam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In case you plan to go there, visit keralakalamandalam.org Silent Valley National Park is only 92kms from Kalamandalam . Btw, research well before you plan your trip. I'm just pointing out some options. I don't know about the current road condition and climate of some of these places. Have a nice time.

Hello raging_bull,thanks for the info. But i can't visit the silent valley and kalamandalam, 'cause the trip is shortened to just 3 days due to some commitments.Silent valley sounds great,i heard its home to black panther,it would have been awesome to spot one(from a jeep safari,of course.) and reading about kalamandalam intrigues me.It must be really significant in kerala culture.i even read that 2 prime ministers visited.I am hoping that once we start riding,we would forget our life and extend it to 5-6 days as planned.
But as it is now,i am going to stick to athirapally, thrissur, nelliampathy.

If you're not riding through Bandipur & Wayanad, you're missing something!! Nelliyampathy & Athirapally are not even cousin sisters of Wayanad.

If you want a real good experience, Kutta, Muthanga, Thamarassery (or Vazhikadavu), Kalpetta, Meppadi, Mananthavady, Ambalavayal, Vythiri are NOT TO BE MISSED!

Yep Wayanad has more to offer in terms of 'natural beauty' but saying that Athirapilly and Nelliyampathy are nowhere near as beautiful is a bit of a stretch IMO.

I will suggest that you visit munnar, its a bikers paradise. Athirappally has just the water falls and the road is not that exciting like munnar. I recently cycled all the way to Athirappally. The climbs are just minimal, compared to Munnar.

Athirapilly has one huge waterfall that is crowded all 365 days & not to mention a hifi shooting spot as well, all polluted with people. The drive/ride from Athirapilly to NH47 back through the curves is ok to an extent. Ride through Talacauvery, Vazhikadavu/Thamarassery, Amabalavayal through the Tea estates, sorry to say, it beats even Munnar. The KA-KL border is pure bliss to keep riding & riding compared to any other places in all 3 states (barring TN's Gobi, Athani, Bannari, Palladam, ECR from Keezhakarai to Tiruchendur & Masinagudi)

Thanks, rxdude. Munnar is definitely superb.I have been there sometime back, even though in a car.The thing is i was in Palakad few months back just for a day for a marriage. It was my first time in kerala on a motorcycle. It was a thoroughly wonderful experience, that i haven't been able to get it out of my head,so i wanted to visit again but to see places i have not visited before. That's why i don't want to visit Munnar unless i have some other awesome destination.I will be heading there first if i can't find any other place.

Hello Aargee,I originally had eyes only for wayanad. The greenery, tree houses and the atmosphere had throughly enticed me.I was planning for a 5-6 day trip, now could make only 3 days.I just wanted to wander around aimlessly in wayanad. Then i read this thread(http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/tourer/2...solo-ride.html) by sujoy of his trip from Ernakulam to coimbatore via valparai. The route for athirapally to valparai is awesome in his photos. That why i decided on athirapilly-valparai and asked for help on places around those area.

P.S - i just googled all the places you suggested in your earlier post. Tamarassery just rocks man. Those ghats and the ambiance is what i was looking for.I would just ride the whole way to see tamarassery and vythri,But it's my friend/co-rider's first bike tour and i don't think i can make the 780 odd km trip through ghats and hairpin bends in 3 days without breaking his back.(we are going on the 200 NS,I say it's bound to happen anyway).Anyways,I am going to try trick the guy into going there,But could you help on places around my previous Athirapally-valparai route, just in case, if i fail miserably?
