• Help needed for Pune-Bangalore trip planning

Hello folks,

This is argent as I am in bit of rush now. I am planning to rode my Pulsar 200NS from Pune to Bangalore. Dont want to give it to movers/railways as there is no time for this and theres also possibility of damage. Right now riding to bangalore seems only option to me and frankly i wanted to do this anyways. So its a welcome opportunity.

Now i need some help in planning the trip, my first long trip. I have done servicing of bike, changed oil, air filter, front fork overall etc. Now i need to fit a good pair of RVMs as 200NS's RVMs are hopelessly inadequate (one mirror is broken anyways and i have to replace it). I want to get better RVMs with wider view angle (convex mirrors). Please suggest a good option for the same and some shop in Pune where I can find these. Also thinking of fitting indicator buzzers and better horn, please suggest option for this and a good shop.

Also need help on trip plan: Road conditions, petrol stops, emergency planning, hotel stop if can't reach BLR for some reason.

Thank you for the help, I appreciate it.
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--

AFAIK roads are awesome. the NH is boring to ride but good roads. you have 12 hours daylight time period. TeeJayy had done it in that time, but he was an experienced rider, and i suggest you to plan up good. many petrol bunks are there, cant give exact locations but since major places like kholapur, belgaum, hubli, davangere, tumkur fall on the way you will find petrol bunks and also good hotels for breakfast and lunch.

map: http://goo.gl/maps/wnCJE

the tolls near tumkur and bangalore get too much traffic by evening, between 5pm to 10pm. this might get exhausting after riding that long.i suggest you to leave a day before in noon and cover till hubli by evening and take a break and start next day morning soon so that you reach bangalore well before 3pm and get into city with less traffic. i do not recommend night riding for this. 900 odd kms, cover 400 previous day and 500 the next day.

Thanks for quick reply mate. I will take into consideration your points. I am not going to ride in dark at any cost except at the start early in the morning. I am thinking of leaving a little early in the morning and start slowly. I have to go to Silk Board so I was thinking of taking NICE road around the city and enter from South.

Good to hear that you are from Bangalore. I am actually shifting to Bangalore soon. (EDIT: Noticed your location now only. )

By any means, do you have any idea how many days I can roam around in Bangalore with my MH bike without paying road tax?? I tried a lot to find but saw various opinions from 7day to 3 months. Tried contacting RTO bangalore, all in vein. Logically it should not be less than 1 month, but thats not the way govt rules work, do they?? I am planning to pay road taxes ASAP but there are more pressing issues at my hand. So it might take a week or two before i can do that. And I am gonna have to face cops a lot of times i guess. Would be great if i know the law.

got this info form @saquib .

Some best practices which you can follow to avoid cops and false penalties and hassle.

1. Police cannot confiscate your bike on ground of being DL(any 1st state where bike is registered originally) registered.

2. RTO officials can impound your bike if they have enough reasons to believe that you have been in Bangalore(Any second city where you move) from a period greater than 11 months.

3. You DO NOT need an NOC to ply your bike on KA(any second state where you have moved) roads. All you need (officially) is to pay the Life Time Road Tax in KA(any second state where you have moved), details of the calculations of this amount are available on the KA(any second state where you have moved) RTO website.

4. NOC is ONLY needed if you want to re-register your bike in KA(any second state where you have moved). But if you pay Life Time Road Tax then there is NO NEED to re-register the bike in KA(any second state where you have moved).

5. You can escape these thieving a-holes, if you can provide enough proof that you have been here for a short time i.e. less than 11 months. Cops will come up with different versions of the timeline you have to pay up the road tax, but 11 months is the official statement as per KA MV Act(for example for Karnataka and being specific to Bangalore city).

here is the Life Time Tax(LTT calculator):
http://www.rto.kar.nic.in/KMVTA%202010.pdf

Its there in this section -Transport Department

My advise: keep few petrol bills from MH handy with you while roaming around in bangalore. i have seen police guys catching other states bikes very less, unless you goofup on anything. if you goof up then you are taken for a ride. better to finish formalities within a month. logically i have heard that time period is 6 months, but heck, police wont know when exactly you came here without proof. so better get it done soon.

Hey thanks for this info. I am familiar with this part as I had tried to find out all procedures and rules. I will be keeping petrol bills (Don't think cops in BLR always believe on it from what I have read on internet from various people) but I will have my rent agreement and office relieving letter as a proof, they cannot discard that one.

Asked this question as last month i was in bangalore and I saw cops catching outside KA vehicles many times, they were literally stopping every one of them near silk board one of those times. Lets hope I wont have much trouble.

they dont catch unless law broken. there are few areas when they usually are and stop people without offence. as i said, better to do it rather get caught.

Re: Help needed for Pune-Bangalore trip planning

Just did the same ride on Sunday 08 Feb. Started from Pune exactly at 4.15am from Deccan...reached Bangalore at 5pm.
The roads overall are arrow straight and pretty good except for a few diversions in pune-Kolhapur patch.
Lot of petrol bunks, usually I topped up my tank for 500rs eveytime. I had refill for 3 times on highway at a break of approx. 220kms. I spent 2000rs on fuel, the first fill was in Pune itself.
I was pulled over by traffic police a few kilometers before Tumkur. A Checked my license and registration and let me go.
P.S. I have a black r15v2

Nilesh,

Let me first tell u about my ride - I did this Pune - Bangalore stretch in December 2012 on a Sunday - started at approx 10 15 am from Pune - Shaniwar Peth and was in Koramangala - Bangalore by 10 pm. R15V2 was the machine.

You are right in deciding to start by around 5 AM. Roads till kolhapur are average with loads of traffic. Diversions only add to the pain. After Kolhapur roads are butter smooth and arrow straight.
There are lots of fuel bunks on the way so no issues there. I have frankly have no clue about hotels on the way but I dont think that should be an issue considering that there are lots of cities in between where you can head to.

One advise would be to keep hydrating whenever you stop. Helps you keep fully awake!
Have a safe ride mate!

By law, you can use your bike with MH registration for 6 months without any issue. You should be in a position to prove that it has been less than 6 months that your bike has been in Karnataka (Petrol bill, PuC certificate, etc.).

Re: Help needed for Pune-Bangalore trip planning

Nilesh,

I went from Pune to Bangalore on my p220 in October 2012. It took around 12 hours (8:30am to 9:00pm).
This info is approx 1.5 years old, so things may have changed.

The Pune - Satara road was a little narrow, since the road widening work was going on.
From Satara onwards, the road is as smooth as butter..... till about 50 kms before bangalore.
About 50 kms before bangalore onwards, there were many diversions as highway construction was going on.
I suspect this must be finished by now (but this is India, you never know).

While you need not worry about petrol pumps, after you fall below the half-tank mark, I would suggest you tank up at the first good petrol pump that you see.
The reason for this is that a few petrol pumps sell only diesel, and a few of them don't look trustworthy.

I would suggest you get a new PUC certificate from Pune to prove that you haven't completed 6 months in Bangalore.

Tips:
Ride carefully. Always keep an eye on your RVMs. The roads are excellent, hence cars tend to over speed a lot (150+ kmph).
Always signal when you change lanes, even if you are just overtaking.
Don't push yourself and take your time. Take rest when required.
Just because someone has completed the journey in 12 hours, you don't need to do the same.
Try to avoid riding during the night.
Either complete the journey during the daylight, or if that is not possible, stay the night at a hotel.
If you are going to tie your luggage to the rear seat, make sure it doesn't cover the tail lights.
Make sure you carry enough cash. Most small petrol pumps don't accept cards.
Carry 2 mobile phones, with contacts (and balance) in both.
I lost my primary phone in bangalore, and I was thankful I was carrying a spare.
Also, ride in the middle of the lane. I was riding at about 100kmph at the edge of a lane, when 2 cars (probably racing) overtook me from both the sides.
It almost scared me to death.
Make sure you (and your luggage) are waterproof. You never know when it might start raining.
Carry few spares (cables), first aid kit, and tools.

If you are foresighted and careful, there isn't anything to worry about. Have a nice ride!

Aradhya.
If you don't look back when you park and walk away, you bought the wrong bike.

Re: Help needed for Pune-Bangalore trip planning

Hey folks,

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I did Pune-Bangalore on my P200NS on 15th Feb. Actually was too busy in other things and couldn't update here. This is what i did.

1. Couldnt start in the morning for some unfinished biz. Had to take care of it. So i could left Pune only at 2:30 in Afternoon.

2. From Pune to some 40odd km before Karad, roads are bad and very windy. Riding over 100 was almost impossible. But the road after that?? Four lane cement road from 40odd km before Karad till I think Kolhapur. By 5.15 I was just outside KOlhapur. Touched 140km and could ride 100 or even 120+ km speeds easily. But you got to be careful for any odd pathhole or patch on the road all the time. All along I was thinking if the road here itself is so good, how better in can be it in Karnataka?? But Boy, oh boy, was i impressed?? The road in Karnataka is just fantabulos.

3. From Kolhapur to Belgaum, little over 100km and i could so it in about an hour. It started getting dark and I called it a day and rested in Belgaum. So from 2.35 to 7.00 i did about 315 km I think. Thats not too bad. I took only a small tea break. Rest I didnt feel like stoping anywhere, nor I needed water. Had tank fulled in Pune. Just before belgaum, the bike went to reserve. Tanked up again at Belgaum.

4. Started at 6AM from Belgaum. And I was so so so delighted to ride the roads. I was so much appriciating all that time for the amazing highway. 6-lane concrete road with lane indicators all over the length. Absolutely no pathholes. I cant remember a single pathhole on that stretch of 100km from Belgaum. I covered 150KM in 1.5 hours. And shit happened.

5. One of the 3 spark plugs, melted and broke apart. It was totally blowen apart and the combustion chamber got leaked. Luckily this happened just near one of the toll plazas well after Hubli. The highway in KA runs through no-mans-land for most of the part. I was very lucky indeed. A very nice guy at a shop near that toll plaza managed to get spark plugs and the connector cap from somewhere. You hardly find such help which is done for no money. Anyways, long story short, 2-hrs wasted and I was on road again. After that no more issues. I made sure to stop after every 60-70 km for few minutes to let the engine catch a breath.

6. The 550 KM from Belgaum to Bangalore were absolute bliss. Apart from 2-3 small 2-lane patches of only few kms, the road is very good mostly 6 lane. I dont have any words to express the feelings. I was cruising at 130+ speed for long long stretches without ever have to come below 130, minimum would be 100km for many a kms. I could cover the whole 550 km from 6AM to 2.00PM, i.e. if you cut the 2-hr delay, in mere 6hrs including lunch breaks, small stopes for engine to cool, and one petrol stop. Not bad at all for my first long ride.

7. Pulsar 200NS is an amazing machine. With all that trashing it worked really great. The spark plug thing could be ignored as they were 17000km old. Otherwise not a single glitch. No back pain whatsoever, no fatigue whatsoever. After all that hard riding I was as fresh I could have been. Overall milage was about 32-32kmpl, which is very good for 120-130kmph cruise.

I loved every bit of it. Glad I made that trip.

BTW, I had 2 ph with me. Cash as well. I rode in middle lane only mostly as I was more comfortable riding in middle lane at those speeds. It gives you some margin of error at sharp curves. At one time I was riding at 130+ speed. A car overtook me and went ahead like a rocket, just disappeared.
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference...

Hello folks, I am doing Bangalore - Chikodi ( 85 kms after Belgaum ) on NH4 on 16th September and back on 20th.. Any updates on the road conditions ? I have done this stretch twice in the last two years and roads are awesome, but just wanted to know if any repair work, diversions etc are going on as of now..

Most recent updates would be helpful..
