  • Route to Manali

    Hi guys,

I had planned to go to Manali (from Chandigarh) on Christmas weekend, starting Friday itself. Heard about the continuous snowfall in the area.
Need your help here. If I encounter snow on the roads,
    * Should i consider investing in an off road Tyre?
    * Do they work on snow covered roads?
    * Is it feasible to go considering the snowfall?
    * Anything else that might be needed for the trip?
    I have a CBR250.

    Thanks!

    Approved.

Take medicines, the essential ones for high altitudes and mountain sickness. Although, it might not be used but better have than have not.

It may or may not be snowing at Manali/ Rohtang Pass, but be ready for it. You don't need to have the best of off road tyres, but your tyres must still be a decent dual purpose ones, or you will face loss of traction while braking or accelerating. This will not only be a safety issue, but the biggest thing: It will slow you down. Otherwise, no big deal. You can live with it if you're reasonably good rider.
Plus, other vehicles pave the way by continuous movement so unless there's very heavy snowfall, you're likely to do ok.

I do recommend a good dual purpose rear tyre though.

But even during snowfall, you must always be on proper road/ ground. Many a times, under weight, the ice breaks and slips you inside where there may be water only. Don't get adventurous regarding this.

You can go if you're ready for it. You can rent/ buy enough hot clothes in Manali itself, but better be prepared. Just don't make a rush and go program, and stay there for 3-4 days.

The Rohtang Pass road is a very rough road (super rough is more like it), keep note of the nearest mechanics, and carry cables and clutch plates with you.
Honda's spares availability is already... you know about it.

    Good luck.
    Any other questions, ask.

Be careful of black ice. Read up about black ice and how to avoid it. Try not to go alone, if you fall it is better to have someone to pick you up!!!

In snow you can manage with dual purpose tyres. If on ice, then the only thing that will help is a lot of prayers That route has quite a bit of traffic so you shouldn't have any problems. If in doubt, stop and let a bigger vehicle cross the iced section before you follow. Ride in the tracks made by trucks, buses, as the weight of those big machines breaks the ice and aids traction.

All the best and ride safe.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Thanks Samarth! Found out that the road to manali is fine from some people who just reached there. I am going to take the NH21 throughtout as the road through Pinjore - Baddi is not in a good shape.

You're welcome. BTW The road to Manali is ok but I'm not mentioning that.

I'm referring to the road to Rohtang Pass. Its beyond Manali if you're coming from Baddi. If you want to see snow, I think Rohtang pass will have plenty of it now. Its a rough road to reach Rohtang pass where there'll be snow, snowmobiles, ATVs, eatable stalls, other businesses, etc. Rohtang Pass is where you mostly go if you visit Manali.

No No i got that. I was just mentioning about the road to Manali. I have been to Rohtang a couple of times before. And you are right when you said it is a rough road out there.
