  • Need suggestion for long ride

    Hi,

I am planning to go for a long ride with one of my friend, next month or so, somewhere (not decided yet, probably North Bengal, Sikkim).
This is going to be my first tour with my bike. So I want to know from you guys WHAT ALL SHOULD I CARRY?

Also, any tip (do's and dont's) for the ride would be helpful.

    Approved!

Your plan is very vague. How can we decide what route/destination you choose? You should tell us about your endurance limit, your budget for expenditure, number of days in hand etc.
    Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

      Hi,

Sorry for being vague. I could not make up my mind on destination.
But now I have. I am going to Darjeeling - Gangtok region with a budget of INR 15000 for 7 days tour.
Since this is my first long distance bike trip I can't really tell you about my endurance limit. Till now I have rode up to 130 km at a stretch with 2 Tea n snacks halts for about 15-20 min each. Hope that gives you some idea.

This being said please share some tips with me.

Also please tell me what should I carry with me (like spares and stuffs)?

Re: Need suggestion for long ride

Good luck to your ride to North Bengal, Sikkim. Since this is your first long ride, I assume you do not have any hill riding experience.

The list of "to carry" may go long.

            1) All vehicle documents (original and few copies). Also valid photo ID proofs of both rider and pillion.
            2) Both you and your pillion should have adequate protection. Full face helmets, riding jackets, knee and sin guards, boots and gloves are all very essential.
            3) If you ride FZ16, you might have tubeless tyres. So puncture repair kit and knowledge to make use of it.
            4) There are some good tyre inflators but that might need an USB port. Good if you want to keep your cell phones charged.
            5) While it is scorching in the plains, you should expect to encounter rain in Darjeeling and Sikkim. So carry rain coats.
            6) Tool kits and a torch.
            7) The luggage will depend upon how you carry stuff. If you have a saddle bag, you can avail amazing volumes. Too much luggage is detrimental to hill riding in particular.
            8) Data of authorized service centres in the route.
            9) Lots of cash. I am not sure if your budget is good enough. Darjeeling and Sikkim is fairly expensive and you chose the high season.
            10) A cool temperament and lot of common sense. Please remember - Speed thrills, but kills. Temperament is the basic differentiator between a racer and a tourer.

              All of the above...

Don't forget water. Lots of water.

Yup and you'll need to have a lot of patience. HOLD YOUR NERVES ON THE CURVES...

Avoid riding at nights when it's too dark. Night riding is always risky, stressful and you'll miss the scenery which would be otherwise awesome in day light

BTW where would you be starting from?
Will your friend be riding pillion?

Make sure you Google police station numbers for the entire route. 100 doesn't work everywhere in India. Trust me, I've learnt it the hard way.

Power bank, Please do carry one or if your bike is out of warranty you can install a bolt charger. Comes for around 2k.

Original bike papers as well as attested copies. Don't give out the originals unless asked.

If you're planning for 7 days, make sure you have a few back up days cause not everything may work as planned.

Check which service provider works where you're traveling. Try and keep spare prepaid sims for different service providers.

Plan your halts and specially your night halts. You don't really wanna spend your nights on the road when you're tired.

Petrol pumps are your best friends when you're lost.
