  • Chennai-Mumbai and back

    Hello,

I'm planning a solo trip from Chennai to Mumbai and back. While I have my route and luggage handling sorted out, I was wondering what is the maximum distance that can be covered in a day. I was thinking of riding for 10 hours and covering around 600km per day. Is this optimum? Can it be pushed to 750? Stamina isn't a problem at all.

I've done Chennai-Bangalore and quite a bit within TN itself.

Also, is it advisable to get the bike checked up in Mumbai once before leaving? I have a Standard 350 UCE.

Remember if you are planning to do this in the monsoons, you will be going slower. At times you might have to stop to let very heavy thunderstorms pass.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

      Mid-October.

But assuming it doesn't rain... what's the maximum that's possible?

The maximum possible depends on a lot of factors.

The rider. How comfortable are you riding long distances. When was the last time you rode 600 km at a stretch in a day?

The bike. What kind of speeds can you maintain safely. The distance your bike can go without taking a break. Tank range etc.

The roads. Good, smooth 4-lane roads or narrow 2-lane undivided roads. Straights or twisties. How many crowded big cities will you go through?

The purpose. Are you riding to enjoy the ride or simply the destination. Will you stop for clicking pictures or only intend to reach the destination in the fastest time possible.

And finally the weather can always throw a wrench in your plans. So buffer up!

For example, my hometown is 500km from where i work, it takes me 6 hours on my Pulsar. 5 hours on a superbike or less and 5 hours in a car. Because i know the road. I have gone back and forth in the same day as well!!!

          Nelamangala - 7:45 after breakfast & refuel 45 min
          Davangere - 10:30 after refuel 10 min
          Belgaum - 12:45 after refuel 10 min

Please remember that two-wheelers are not allowed on Mumbai-Pune Expressway. You have to ride on the 4-laned NH 4 via Lonavala, which goes by the side of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway at several stretches.

Here are the timings of my solo-ride of the Golden Quadrilateral on my Thunderbird 500 some months back. I did Kolkata-Delhi in 29 hours with breaks for power naps, food and fuel, which I feel was the longest and toughtest leg. The average speed was less at 53 kmph due to bad roads, traffic jams, delay while crossing the inter-state check posts, etc. Bangalore-Chennai was the shortest and sweetest with the best average speed of 65 kmph!
