• Trip to Rohtang Pass

Good morning everyone

I am planning a trip to Rohtang pass from 15-20 oct. I want to know the rules for bike permit for going there. Is the permit mandatory ? Is the permit required if I go to Rohtang via Shimla instead of manali. And what should be the possible route if I go via manali, that has better road conditions. Should I take the regular route or go via una, nangal etc.
Thanks in advance ...!!!

Via Shimla? You will have to go through the entire Spiti valley before you reach Rohtang. From Shimla you can go to Jalori Pass and then to Manali. It is much less crowded and easier to access without any unnecessary paperwork!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

My point is why bother going to Rohtang at all. It's a dirty bloody touristy place! There's a lot more interesting stuff in Himachal!

You are right, I agree totally with you. But we want snow. Can you tell us other places where we can get to see snow & accessible by bike. How about chanshal pass or kunzum pass ...???

Don't know about Chanshal Pass. I think Mik did it some time back. He might be able to help you out.

Kunzum Pass is a bit risky at that time, if you are lucky you can scrape through. If it snows you might get stuck there. And really badly.

I guess you stick to Rohtang only then

Re: Trip to Rohtang Pass

October mid - luck will play a big part in getting snow anywhere. If the priority is to get snow, then I would suggest keep tracking some local newspapers online. If it snows, Kufri, Jalori pass, rohtang etc will generally get it apart from Kinnaur(Chitkul)
I crossed Rohtang (came from Spiti side) 10 days back and a whole lot of checking for permits is happening. Also, I am not sure they will let you go to the top unless you have the leh permits.
Reaching Kunzum means you have to go from Kaza side. That will easily take 3.5 days unless you do cannonball runs. Atleast 11 days back there was no snow on Kunzum.

I would recommend the following circuit. Delhi-Kalpa-Chitkul-Jalori-Shoja-Aut Tunnel-Mandi-Delhi. You get to visit Chitkul & Kalpa - both divinely beautiful and then Jalori and Shoja - which is pretty too.

Thanks brother. How many days should the itinerary be for the circuit that you've suggested. And what possible pit stops you suggest.
Thanks

The itinerary could be
Delhi - rampur - kalpa - chitkul - shoja - delhi/chd -delhi (shoja delhi through aut will be a bit of cannonball run)
