  • Planning a second South India visit: Points of Interest advice

    Hey All,

It's been a while since i planned a multiday tour, last one was ladakh last season. I visited South India in 2013 covering Coorg Ooty Munnar and Kanyakumari. I'm planning another 6-7 day visit in December first/second week.

As of now a rough plan looks as follows:

    Day 1 - 780km - Hyderabad to Chennai/Pondicherry (via Guntur/ECR)
    Day 2 - 50km - Pondi/Auroville
    Day 3 - 450km - Ramsheswaram/Dhanushkodi
    Day 4 - 408km - Valparai
    Day 5 - 136km - Thrissur(Via Chalakudy)
    Day 6 - 463km - Banagalore (via Palakkad)
    Day 7 - ~550km - Hyderabad

I do feel that the Valparai bit is causing a bit of a rushed schedule, however I've always wanted to visit the place. I have looked at the distances and don't mind riding about 400-500kms/8 hours a day. As of now only Day 1 and 7 are 500 plus days which is manageable for me.

Just wanted to know if there are any other places along the way/or slight diversions that are interesting. Any info on foodie places/scenic points/stretches of road etc at any of these point would help as well.

    Thanks for your inputs!

Day 1 - 780km - Hyderabad to Chennai/Pondicherry (via Guntur/ECR) - cake walk can be done in 12 hours and lesser.
      Day 2 - 50km - Pondi/Auroville - local
      Day 3 - 450km - Ramsheswaram/Dhanushkodi - can be done good roads.
Day 4 - 408km - Valparai - you will get drained to exhausted. - rameshwaram - madurai - dindigul - awesome roads - once you start nearing pollachi it will start getting difficult plus it will get extreme foggy if you are nearing sunset. also lot of places to see enroute - pollachi - aliyar - 40 hair pin bends - valparai. no point going for a night stay.
Day 5 - 136km - Thrissur(Via Chalakudy) - doable in 5 hours ( riding) however you need time to see wazachal and athirapally falls. start early morning
      Day 6 - 463km - Banagalore (via Palakkad) - good roads
      Day 7 - ~550km - Hyderabad good roads.

Thanks for the road related inputs and pointing out the Valparai fog issue. I was thinking, what if flip the route around and do it the exact reverse order. Starting from BLR-Thrissur-Valparai-Rameshwaram-Pondicherry-HYD. Essentially, it solves the problem of Valparai to an extent as I can an early start and even if i reach Dhanushkodi by sundown, it's fine. plust I can enjoy a relaxed ride upto Valparai.

On a separate, at the forest check posts, do they ask for the vehicle's RC? I can't seem to recollect it from my previous rides because I had the papers with me anyway. This time though I have a new bike, Pune registered, and the RC's have not arrived yet(the RTO has a stationery shortage!). I just have an insurance cover note and the owners manual to prove ownership :-/

Just wondering if anyone knows the best route to take from Kochi to Rameshwaram?

Valparai is a must do including Palani and Munnavaram. Remember to carry warm clothes as it is very cold. Riding in the hills is much slower, so I think you should budget for more time. Perhaps do an overnight halt at Valparai.
