  • Solo Ride | November 2016 to Sikkim & Gurudongmar | Inputs please

    Hello everyone,

I have planned a ride to Sikkim from Kolkata in November end where I would be riding solo from Kolkata. Later, a group might join in a car from Siliguri. But, basically I am riding solo and want to be prepared that way.

Apart from my fully serviced P200NS, I am carrying some essentials including a puncture kit, some engine oil, extra clutch wire and some tools (basic 200NS tool set and Bosch Skil 30 Piece Screwdriver). I am also planning to learn a bit about AFR tuning at high altitudes, changing clutch wire and some basics from my local mechanic.

The plan covers around 2200 kms in 9 days across Gurudongmar Lake, Old Silk Route and almost covering all the main routes in Sikkim.

I now have some questions regarding the Ride:

    1. While riding, you often come across some viewpoints where you have to leave your bike out of sight and walk across to the viewpoint. What do you do with your saddle and tank bags?
Unloading them, carrying them with you and reloading them back to your ride, is one hell of a task!!! Ideas/Suggestions please?

    2. Some blogs across the web, have mentioned a hell lot of things as basic repair learning. I have just targeted to learn how to change clutch wires, already know how to fix punctures and learn about AFR tuning. Anything else, you think learning would be easy and better.

    3. How is Sikkim Mobile network coverage? I will have a Vodafone and a Jio with me.

    4. What happens if my machine fails me somewhere at a lonely place on the way/back from Gurudongmar?

    5. The route in short is – Kolkata-Siliguri-Padamchen-Zuluk-Nathu La-Baba Mandir-Tsomgo Lake-Gangtok-Lachen-Gurudongmar-Lachung-Zero Point,Yumsamdong-Mangan-Pelling-Okhrey-Siliguri-Kolkata
Is there any section of the above route which might not be do-able on a 200NS at November End (19th-27th) ?

    6. I know high altitude is a problem for Carb bikes like 200NS. Although, it will be tuned to the best possible setting, is it necessary to have it rejetted with a copper wire, before going to the Gurudongmar Altitude?

Since, I am a newbie to such long and high altitude rides, riding Solo on top of this is making me think so much. I know that I will go on this ride for sure. Just want to be prepared as much as possible and avoid odd circumstances.

      1. Better not to keep your bike out of sight with luggage. Though chances are less for theft still its risky. So if you find view points far from bike parking, better skip those points. Sad though!

      2. Nothing else to be learnt. I recently went for Sikkim tour. Roads are average in most places. Also include hand pump and spare gear brake levers in case you have a fall in the slopes. In case of unfortunate engine brake down you will definately get helping hand as roads are never deserted.

      3. Poor mobile coverage in china border areas. Mostly zero coverage.better inform your near and dear ones about it before. I had absoulute 0 cverage for 2 days in nathula and zuluk area.

      4. In case of total breakdown get towing help for local on chargeble basis.mostly locals will agree for some nominal charge.

      5. Any route is possible for any 2 wheeler bro. About 200 ns, it will glide smoothly no worries at all. Just beware to carry extra bungees for safety.

      6. No idea about copper jetting. I took my re himalayan. Did not even feel any power loss at 14500 feet. So your NS should be a cake walk too. Rest all the best and trust your bumble bee.

Also to add, skip hotels and check for home stays in remote area. Its cheper, local food delicacy and kind of new experience. If planning to stay at zuluk check out sojourn homeatay. Apart from view and food u get a chance for off roading of 100 metre from main road to the homestay.i believe u will remember that 100 metre for a long time to come!
