  • Need help to plan a trip to gangtok

    Hello fellow xBhpians,

I am planning to go on a trip to Gangtok. Can anyone who have already visited the area tell me something related to the following topics

1.THE CLOTHING-I am planning to do this trip around mid of January. I know this is not the best time to visit the area but i will be going at that time of the year,so please tell me type of the clothing I MUST take.

2.THE OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS FOR PERMITS AND HOW TO- I would like to know about the procedure, time the offices remain open, the cost , documents required and everything related to that.

3.BEST PLACES TO VISIT- Please tell me the BEST places to visit there. The stay would be of around 4 to 5 days.

4.ANY RENTALS FOR CLOTHING- Are clothes such as gloves, jackets, scarf etc available there for rental? i have the proper gears and all with thermal lining. But still knowing such stuff are available would be great.

5.STAY OPTIONS- what would be approximate cost of lodging per day on an average there. I am planning to stay at Gangtok itself. If there are some better areas or places to stay please do tell.

6.ANYTHING ELSE THAT I MIGHT HAVE TO CONSIDER FOR THIS TRIP.

    THANK YOU.

Re: Need help to plan a trip to gangtok

You can visit Gurudongmar lake, changu lake, nathula, zuluk, tathagata tsal in ravangla, banjhakhi falls, namchi, lachung, lachen, yumthang. Also while returning you can visit tarey bhir few kms outside kalimpong, it's uncharted paradise. You'll need permits for visiting north Sikkim, some places in East and West Sikkim like nathula, zuluk. It'll be very cold during that time. Places like nathula, changu will be snowed in. And I think gurudongmar lake will be closed due to snowfall and negative temparature. Wear proper winter clothes. Accessories are available for rental, such as boots, gloves but I suggest you bring your own. As far as staying as it is a seasonal time hotels will be booked and the cost will be high. But there are plenty of hotels in and around gangtok, mostly in MG marg. You can also book them online. Prices can vary. But you'll find hotels from around ₹700 not very good one though. Go a little higher around ₹1200 and bargain a little. Consider the time you are visiting October-november is the best time to visit as it's pleasant weather. After that the chill starts to set in. Also you'll not get permits for a long duration so you might have to make multiple permits for north, east and west Sikkim, and the duration is also short. Mention a longer duration when you fill up the forms for permits as they usually allot lesser time than what's applied for. All the best.

I can't exactly tell which places require for permits but tsongmo and nathula requires permits. Also add tathagata tsal 70kms away from gangtok and a tarey bhir just few kms outside kalimpong. If you are visiting tarey bhir then make sure you leave at morning around 7 or 8 am so that you can walk along the ridge that is some 3 odd kms. Make sure you're fit enough to walk 6 or 7 kms.
