  • Queries related to Winter ride to Kashmir - December

    Hi everyone! This is Vivek.

I've plans to ride the Kashmir Valley on my motorcycle during the last week of December. I'll be flying down to Chandigarh and then will ride from there. I'm yet to decide whether to transport my vehicle to Chandigarh or rent a motorcycle. I'm open to both the options for now.

The reason why I'm writing this post is because I'm unable to find definite answers related to road conditions. These are the places I'm planning to visit in the valley:

    1. Srinagar (I hope this will include every sightseeing within a radius of 20 Kms)

    2. Gulmarg. It has already started snowing heavily there. Do I have the slightest chance to make it all the way upto a nearest location where I can park my motorcycle and hop onto a snowcat or something similar :P

    3. Sonamarg- I was told that my chances are slim to make it to Sonamarg.

    4. Pahalgam -At any cost, I would never wanna miss Pahalgam and the Aru Valley.

I may look naive for including the below mentioned places, however, I'd be happy to hear your thoughts on this:

Gurez- This has been running on my mind for quite sometime. I was informed that Gurez would be literally cut-off from the rest of the country during the winters. Yet, I'd like to know whether would it be possible for me to ride upto Razdan pass.

    Lolab Valley -
I know I'm asking too much :P But, I can't help my curiosity.

    Uri and Teetwal

As far as the routes are concerned, I'd like to stick with the traditional Jammu-Srinagar highway. Would appreciate to hear from the experts whether the Old Mughal road be accessible.

Please do share your feedback. Please feel free to include more places if I've missed any.

    P. S

I have a 10 day period to do this trip from Chandigarh. So, please suggest me accordingly.

    Thanks in advance.

Kashmir has received good amount of snowfall this year.

Road up till Sonmarg will most probably be closed.
Gurez road is already closed. Uri is also accessible via Gurez, hence closed for this year.
      Mugal road is closed.
Lolab side I don't have any news.

Pagalgam is open throughout the year, but Aru valley road will be hit or miss.

If it snows around your travel dates, you may not be able to ride to Gulmarg. And even if the road is open, I will advice against it as the snow become extremely slippery.

I rode to Kashmir around Christmas last year and it wasn't as enjoyable as I would have liked. It is extremely cold and days are extremely short.

I would suggest you to take a flight till Srinagar and take a taxi here.
Riding from Chandigarh to Jammu is extremely boring. Jammu to Srinagar is full of road construction and becomes a hellish ride. After that there isn't much of riding inside Kashmir in Winters.

      Ride safe and have fun.
      Regards
      Nadeem
