  • Queries Regarding Leh Plan Jun,2020

    Hi Guyz,
I am planning Leh Trip with my wife on my motorcycle this year in the month of Jun,20. I am having following queries, Request you guys to throw some light on the same:
    1. Whether it is safe that we travel without a group?
    2. Whether we have to book the hotels in advance for roaming in inner places in Ladakh like Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso , Tso Moriri. Or we can book the hotels on the spot?
    3. Whether we need Riding Jackets, Paints with Rain & Thermal Liner? Or we can do with normal jackets with extra layers on it & Knee,Elbow Guards?
    4. Whether Can we do it on Avenger 160 easily?

    Thanks in advance.

      1. Whether it is safe that we travel without a group?
Yes its safe in ladhak-spiti region.

      2. Whether we have to book the hotels in advance for roaming in inner places in Ladakh like Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso , Tso Moriri. Or we can book the hotels on the spot?

If u plan ur ride well and reach the destination early, say before 4,5pm u can get stays at good rates and u can bargain.
If you want to keep yourself away from crowd, then u can stay at merak which is few kms ahead from pangong tso.

Tso morriri had limited stay options when i visited 2 yrs back. Better to book in advance.

      3. Whether we need Riding Jackets, Paints with Rain & Thermal Liner? Or we can do with normal jackets with extra layers on it & Knee,Elbow Guards?

Safety gears are must on no matter where you go. However if you yet to purchase all those then u can skip pant and manage it with knee gaurds.(dont forget to wear good jeans).
Jacket's in built thermal/rain layer is not sufficient during early morning rides (7,8am). So get some good inner body thermals. Better to have additional pairs which ll come into use in case of any sudden late night rides.
Buy "warm me" packets which produces heat to keep you warm( they come in small packets also so that u van insert it hand gloves also).
U can buy good insulation gloves, fur shoes, scarf, caps, bandana etc. in srinagar/manali/shimla depending on your journey start point. Its cheap and good quality.(bargain is the key).
Good rain coats are life saver in zozila/rohtang passes.its always rains there.

      4. Whether Can we do it on Avenger 160 easily?
With pilion, with additional luggage its bit heavy for 160cc bike. However if your wife is fit and never minds to walk for few meters in high passes, then it wont be a problem.(even walking needs more energy due to low oxygen.)
Be careful at water crossings as avenger is low ground clearance bike. Plan well, wait for some one to pass and then approach.
A guy done it with his platina in this forum it seems.(just to boost up your confidence).
Modifying carborator jet, will take care of bikes less power/suffocation problem at higher altitudes. Most of the mechanic will do in Srinagar/manali/shimla. Get it done before approaching to mountains.

Keep essential spares as ready to use(acceleration, clutch cable).
Keep first aid box at handy place. Know about AMS well before starting trip and maintain good fitness. Always avoid staying in high altitude areas which leads to AMS.
DRINK plenty of water even if dont feel thirsty. Best way to keep AMS at check.

For road open/close condition, keep an eye on DOW community site. usually they update faster than any other.

      All the best.
      Ride safe..
