  • Need Info: Chandigarh - Jaipur

I will be riding to Jaipur from Chandigarh solo early Saturday i.e. 17th December morning around 2amish. I will be in Jaipur for 3-4 hours before I head back to delhi at max by 3pm Sat, as I need to be in delhi by the end of that day. I am solely interestd in riding, and Rajasthani food! Not photography.

This is the route that I have chosen with the help of a friend from Hisar, as I want to stay away from NH-1 as much as possible:

    Chandigarh - Ambala - Kaithal - Hisar - Sikar - Jaipur

Although this is a longer route, but have heard that the roads are quite good and will keep me off the NH-1.

Now, I have a few questions regarding the ride:

    1) How safe is it riding in Haryana after dark?
    2) Can someone give me a detailed breakup of the roads i.e. Inner as well as NH, on this route.
    3) I am not at all familiar with this route, so a road map would be helpful.
    4) As I leave Hisar and enter Rajasthan, what places enroute can I find good food (Rajasthani)
    5) Do you have any other route in mind which is better? Let me know.
    6) Also, what is the condition of the NH-8 these days?

I know thats a lot of questions but I deem them necessary, hence the thread.

    Thanks!

Ambala - Hisar is mostly single lane. Tarmac moderately good to bad at places. You will average about 50-55 kph at most. Hisar - Churu not very good. But Churu onwards, at least till Chomu, things look up road-wise. And this is where you'll get good Rajasthani food. From Sikar, you head for Jaipur via Khatu Shyamji, Ringus and Chomu. Good roads, low traffic density though single lane all the way. Chomu - Jaipur is crowded and unruly. The way it usually is between a big city and a close-by satellite town.

Suggest you avoid riding through Haryana during the dark hours. (Advise delaying your departure by a couple of hours). Kaithal - Hisar - Rajgarh especially. If not for possible lawlessness then for the countless and usually unmarked speed-breakers you'll find all over Haryana. I was a regular traveller between Delhi - Abohar (in Punjab) till last year and of the 250 kms that my route traversed through Haryana (Delhi - Rohtak - Hisar - Sirsa - Dabwali - Malout - Abohar), I counted 176 speed-breakers in all. 7 alone through the village of Meham between Rohtak and Hisar.

Day-time travel is no issue provided you don't get into ego tussles with ANYONE on the road. You cannot out race, out stare, out fox and out wit a Haryanavi in Haryana even if you're on the R1 and the man is on foot.

The route, though unorthodox, should be enjoyable.

PS: Hope you don't wear 'flashy' riding gear. Attracting attention, of any sort, is not advisable in Haryana. The people are great and very large hearted provided you don't step on their toes, advertently or inadvertently.

NOTE: The reference above to the natives of Haryana as Haryanavis and the anecdotal description therein is in no way intended as a transgression of their dignity. It is purely as a means of communicating my experiences to another traveller who shall shortly be passing through the region and an awareness thereof could be helpful for him. .

I was actually waiting for reply from you. You have wrapped it up so well that I dont think I need to ask anymore questions. Thanks!

I was always looking forward to riding through Haryana into Rajasthan for more reasons than one. I had initially thought of doing it Kaithal - Bhiwani - M'garh - Jaipur way, but an accomplice advised against it due to pathetic roads, fog and frivolous truck drivers!

Hisar - Churu not very good. But Churu onwards, at least till Chomu, things look up road-wise. And this is where you'll get good Rajasthani food..
Thats good to know. Like I mentioned earlier, I am doing this just for the ride and scrumptious Rajasthani dal bhati churma IN Rajasthan to add flavor. If I get such food for the 'bon-apetite' at the place you mentioned "Churu" then honestly I wont even bother entering Jaipur (Unless I have no other option) and take a road that will me get me to the NH-8, off to delhi.

Now this can be quite a bother! Well, if I leave Chd around 4, by the time I reach Kaithal, the sun should be up.I will see where I can improvise.

That I coudnt have agreed more, specially after spending 4 years in good old Yamunanagar! And yamunanagar wasn't core Harayana!

No sir, I do-not wear flashy riding gear. Just a simple riding jacket and gloves with subtle demeanor. So there should be no issues on that front

Thanks for the info again, sir.

                Glad to be of help

As an after-thought, fog could turn out to be your biggest obstacle, esp for some 2-3 hours just after sunrise. This region is prone to a heavy and persistent blanket of fog through the cold part of winters. You are an experienced campaigner and would exercise caution without the need for being reminded of it.

In case you've had your fill of the interiors of Haryana and Rajasthan and once you've filled up on the local delicacies too, you could take the Ajitgarh road from close to Khatu Shyamji and join the NH8 at Shahpura itself.

Thanks Again, sir ... I have been invited for a Haryanvi breakfast in Hisar by a senior friend. I expect to savour lunch in Rajasthan and finally dinner in Delhi.

I wish to meet you on Sunday, in the Delhi G2G, if you have plans to come that is.

I did the Jhunjhunu - Delhi route that you will take just a few weeks ago.. the news is that route from Delhi to Loharu is very very bad. Horrible roads, traffic and crazy people.

From Loharu to Jhunjhunu is sublime and you will cover this in a breeze. of special mention is the toll road that has literally no traffic and great scenic beauty, typical rajasthan. From Jhunjhunu, eventhough I did not do it, the state highway is awesome too.

Rule of thumb - Haryana Roads, extremely bad, pot holed and a nightmare to beware, esp. the horrible speed breakers. Rasthan roads, sublime and worth the ride!

i would suggest taking the normal NH1 route. Since they have improved the highway visibility a lot. They have put reflective banners, and cats eyes wherever there is an intersection, and the Panipat flyover is a blessing, all the way till sonepat the highway is great. Save time, and have the comfort of single lane traffic only.

Fog would/should be encountered between ambala and kurukshetra. I was there last week only, and it was in that area only that fog was found.

The advantage is you get to enjoy the NH8 highway too after entering delhi. But takin the route less travelled has its own fun too.

Yes, I'll be there for this sunday's G2G. Will be good to meet you.

Nice way to spend a day. Almost like those quintessential 'Concorde flying' millionaires who would breakfast in Paris, have lunch in New York and be in time for Dinner in London.

Your 'Rule of Thumb' has held through since the last decade at least sir. Always wonder why Haryana sees no benefit in improving roads when its neighbors, Himachal, Rajasthan and Punjab, all have excellent roads.

jd, I am on the NH-1 atleast once a month, frequenting chd-delhi. I coudnt agree more to the fact that the NH-1,and then the NH-8 is by far the best way to get to Jaipur from the part of the world I live in. But, that would ruin the sole purpose of the ride altogether. I would be returning from the 1, on monday so I want to avoid it on Saturday. Thanks anyways

Thanks for the invite Rohit, thats real nice of you. But tell me, why go to Leh when you can see the place surfing xBhp

...And I am back.. From the lovely Bajre ki roti aur chane ki chutni of haryana to the dal bhati of Rajasthan to the paneer bhurji being cooked at home right this moment, have seen it all. BTW I got the meal I was looking for between Churu and Sikar at a dhaba near Fatehpur. Ate so much that didnt bother going to Jaipur..And took the following route back : Fatehpur - Mandawa - Jhunjunu - Bohana - Narnaul - Rewari - Delhi..Came back 6:30.. Roads were good, no major issues except for some fog enroute Kaithal.

So Chandigarh - Delhi, the other way round : 750 kms
