• Metzeler M7RR Tyres - For Triumph Street Triple

Hi All,

I have been using Metzeler M7RR tyres for my Triumph Street Triple (both front and rear changed at same time in March-2017). Have used them for about 4500 km so far and these are really good tyres.

Bought these from Metro Tyres (Jagtap Dairy Chowk, Pimple Saudagar, Pune - 411027). Price at that time was Rs 23500/- for the set (fitting was not included as I did that in the Triumph Service Centre).

Compared to Stock Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa Tyres that my bike originally came with, below are important points:

Positive - Almost same level of grip, much lower price (Pirellis could cost anything from Rs 32000 to 39000), similar or a bit more life-span (10000-12000 km compared to 8000-10000 km for Pirelli), good wet grip also which is a bit better than stock tyres. In fact I have done more aggressive riding on these tyres than original ones and they give me strong confidence to lean into corners.

Negative - When going for track usage, people have reported that this has lesser grip than Pirelli. Also, these tyres behave little eagerly when leaning into corner compared to stock tyres. For some people it is good but some people may get surprised due to this tendency and can make mistakes during aggressive cornering.
These have slightly more warm up time than Pirelli - but in 5-15 minutes depending on season, they get pretty well warmed up after which they perform great (Pirellis almost always warmed up in 5 minutes or so)

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I would be interested if any seniors have compared all premium tyres on an identical bike model in India. Metzeler, Pirelli, Michelin, Dunlop and Bridgestone.
Also it would be good to know if MRF has any plan to enter this segment (they already have got Masseter but those apparently are for relatively smaller bikes <400 cc.)

My Benelli 300 came with Pirelli Angel ST which lasted for good 25000 Km and I was super happy with their performance regardless of road and weather conditions. When it came to replacing, it became very difficult to source or find Pirelli Angel ST's with 160 dimension for rear. Even Angel GT's were not easily available and could cost up to 30K even if you manage to get after considerable wait time. Hence, settled for Metzeler M7RR after reading reviews and recommendation from fellow Benellian brokenbinil

Got both front and rear from Orion motors in Bangalore. Cost me 24.5 K. Have run close to 3 K after getting them fixed at Benelli ASC. As Jeevan pointed out, these are very good but one has to be very careful while cornering as these tires make the motorcycle eager to bend and flick, which is both positive and negative, depending upon the rider's skills. I, for sure, was surprised with the flick-ability provided by these tires. Have to see whether these will last as long as Pirellis did. My hunch is rear will last about 15 K Km.

I have read some material about Pirelli Angel series of tyres (GT and ST). These seem more of touring/sport touring oriented tyres and not made for aggressive cornering.
Metzeler M7RR are equivalent of Pirelli Rosso Corsa (which come as stock tyres with Triumph Street Triple S version now a days).
Definitely compared to Pirelli Angel series these tyres are going to last much less. 15000 km for the set is more realistic expectation (on Street Triple these would last only 10-12000 km).

BTW - if you are using up rear tyre much quicker than front, and if you are not frequently pulling wheelies or doing burn-outs etc, then there is some scope for improvement in your braking technique. Front and Rear Tyre should wear out fairly evenly. Ideal braking should be like 70%-30% split between front and rear (many people do exactly opposite and use rear brake much more - this causes rear to wear out quickly - plus it is not safe to do so.)

So please check the way you brake and seek advice from any expert riders from your group whom you frequently meet.

One CRITICAL INFORMATION on Puncture Proofing Treatment:

I have used puncture proofing treatment on both stock Pirelli Rosso Corsa as well as current Metzeler Tyres. My Pirellis lasted about 10200 km while so far I have done about 5800 km on Metzelers. My bike has completed 2 years now and I have not faced a single puncture till date.

Previously on Pirelli tyres, I got the treatment done via Triumph which was expensive (Rs 2800 overall) while on current tyres I did a much cheaper treatment (Rs 700 overall). But so far I have not faced any punctures despite traveling in nail-infested Hinjewadi area in Pune on daily basis. This particular puncture proofing I am also using in tyres of my Honda City iVTEC and Suzuki Access 125 vehicles (all have tubeless tyres).

Note that the treatment is not effective on Tube Tyres. Works only on tubeless but I am quite satisfied with this.
