Your understanding is correct. More treads would mean better grip in bad conditions, water, sands, bad road, etc. as these elements seep into the treads thus enabling the rubber to grip the solid surface under the water/ sand.

Depending on your speeds, even reasonable street tyres can get through Ladakh, but they're unsafe. For example, you're on a slippery slope and the bike starts going backward and you brake, but tyres lock up.
If you're clear with the concept of grip and can maintain presence of mind, you can take street tyres too. Also, cold conditions always result in lesser grip. So, at some places you may have to keep lesser speeds.

My recommendation would be that you go with a new tyre and be confident about the journey.

Also, just carry a tyre puncture repair kit with you. The tubeless one. Your bike has tubeless tyres, right?

U mentioned 7 puncture already at rear. Tyre change is must.
If u r interested in local off roading places I advice u to buy ralco speed blaster tyre which is budget friendly, a dual sport tyre.
U can change ur existing tyre at Amritsar or Delhi depending on which route u traveling.
I used it in my dominar and completed ladakh-spiti without a puncture.
To further boost the confidence I done it with pillion+45kg luggage.

A friend last year did Ladakh in his D200, he ran mrf mogrip tyres, and came back from the ride pretty satisfied, have a look at those too.

Thank you.. I'm thinking to install JK blaze BR41 130/70 17 Heard its dual purpose... Good for both ON/OFF roads....
