  • Re: Experience of transporting a bike on Indian Railways

There are 2 ways by which you can transport a bike in trains
    1) Luggage (if you travel in the same train with your bike on a confirmed ticket)
    2) Parcel (if you don't travel in the same train)
Some stations don't allow/have Parcel services,(e.g. Nizamuddin station) learnt it the hard way so do check that before anything.

Apart from having a luggage van ,always try to use a train which starts and terminates at the places you board and get down. This gives enough time for safe offloading of your bike.
(for e.g. Sampark kranti for BLR-DEL)
Else at-least confirm that the train stops at the station for a good amount of time for your bike to be offloaded.

If you ask me, the safest way to transport your bike is as luggage, where you see how it was loaded ,ensure that the bike is traveling along with you and how its unloaded.

There are a lot of people who are ready to pack your bike outside the railway carriage area with thick cartoons and jute bags. You can either bargain with them or get it bubble wrapped by yourself . Pointers are you can go to any bike godown and collect lot of waste materials from which their bikes were transported.

Documentation is generally pretty simple , like photo copies of DL,registration,PUC etc and a luggage/parcel form which also includes travel insurance available at all stations. Porters may ask for some extra (bribe) ...

Front what I have seen, in most cases of railway transportation, front fairing and front/rear indicators take the most of beating, so see if you can either pack it very well or take them separately, you might save yourself some heart ache and money.

I have used trains twice ,once GATI and twice Local packers and movers along with my other house-hold articles on BLR-KOL-BLR & BLR-DEL-BLR route and would ask you to avoid GATI . They cheat you in multiple fronts ,are expensive and inferior to railways.
And also they transport through roads which has its own demerits like jerking,humps,accident,local-police asking bribe etc. and generally takes more time.
Trains are efficient in that matter if the frequency is good.

I am in no way advertising Indian railway,(have no relationship) but saying I had an ok experience if you know things and make some effort.

Also I have seen people asking for transportation for small distances like CHN-BLR or PUN-BLR, in these cases the best way is to ride down.
Believe me it saves a lot of headache, money and going around.

    My 2 cents...

I will be receiving my Motorcycle this Sunday. Its coming from Kolkata to Hyderabad. My office has a tie up with AGS Four Winds Packers and Movers. They are charging me exorbitantly high rate. The quotation is 11k. But i am ok with it as my office will reimburse. Has anyone had previous experience with AGS? They packed my CBR in front of me and did a nice job. Just hoping that it arrives in proper condition.

Get the original styro-foam packing material from the dealers. They just throw it away.

Double bubble wrap for headlight, blinkers and tank. Thx amazon.in / flipkart - just preserve the packing materials.

          Card board for seats.

Gunny bag / tarp over everything.

Extra brake and clutch levers (dont blame indian railways)

          Remove mirrors

          And pray to your God.

You should make a different thread for your trip, mentioning all the details and members would be able to guide you better.

This thread is about how to transport the bike via train or other carriers.

              Ride safe and have fun.

Okay okay, you should edit the previous post also and mention the same there.

If the stay if for less than 6 months, you won't need to do anything. But if its for more, then the police will ask you to pay the road tax in that state. (I hope i am not wrong with this info)

Yes, I read quite a few of the pages in this thread, so I know about the procedure I have to follow. After carefully going through the thread, I have determined that the best way to transport my bike would be to ride it . Also, I will be there for at-least 2-years.
Hence, asking you all to suggest the best route to take to Coimbatore.

                    • Transporting my bike to Bangalore.

Request to Mods: if a thread already exists regarding this type of query, could you be so kind and direct me to it.

Hi Guys,I live in Dehradun Uttarakhand. I am a software engineer and I have a job offer in Bangalore, therefore I am going to shift to Bangalore by the end of March 2015. I have a year old R15, that I wish to take to Bangalore with me. The bike has been registered at Dehradun. What I wanted to know is..

                      1. What documents (other than registration) do I have to get from Dehradun RTO (any NOC,or any other document).

                      2. What is the best means of transportation (trains or transport trucks or any other).

                      3. After reaching Bangalore, what is the procedure to make my bike fully legal of Bangalore roads. ie. registration, road tax, any other tax.

                      4. Is it necessary to change the number plate to KN or can I just pay all the taxes, get a paper stating the same and ride with my old registration and number plate.

                      5. How much time does it take to get all the formalities done.

                      Thanks in advance.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

If you are travelling by train then your life would be much easier, you have to just book your bike on the train as extra luggage as an extension of your ticket. You need to ensure that your bike is packet well, so that nothing break while transporting.

If you are not travelling by the same train as your bike, then you want to book your bike on a train that starts in Guhawati and ends in Delhi. So that your luggage is not overcarried. You need to take photocopies of your bikes paper and ID. Also you need to provide details of the person who is supposed to collect the bike from the station in Delhi. You will be given a booking receipt, the original of which will have to sent to the person collecting the bike in Delhi. He/ she will have to go with the receipt and a photo ID to collect the bike.

Booking amount has to be paid in advance of course.

                          Hope this helps.

                          Cheers
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

                            Hi,

I am planning to buy a new bike....250 cc upwards like KTM or Ninja.....but then I have plans to move abroad next year. So how can I get my vehicle transported to the other country.

e.g. KTM is lot cheaper in India then US or AUS...so i think its better to tranport the vehicle as I move? But then there are things I might have overlooked so would be glad if anyone has done this or knows about the process can share the information.

                                Couple of questions -

                                1. How many days before train start date can you book bike on train, assuming I want to book the bike on a specific departure date on a specific train ?

                                2. Is it feasible to send an additional carton along with the bike ?

                                3. How are charges calculated for #1 & #2 ?

                                4. Is there some wait period for which the items are kept at the station, before the discard them OR start charging for the duration of stay ?
