  • A GPS Security Tracker for bikes to avoid theft

A new GPS tracker has been launched to keep a track on your two wheeler. Even though this is meant for cycles, it is a nifty gadget which can be used even on a motorcycle.

The BikeSpike as it is called is a GPS Device which is bolted onto the frame of your cycle/motorcycle. After that, one can sync it with their phone to ensure that they know where they bike is at any point of time. One has to enter to coordinates of the location of the bike, and if it is removed from the set coordinates, it sends an alarm to the phone in sync. It can then track down the location of where the bike has been taken, which can be given live to the police.

The additional benefit for cyclists is that it gives information on calories burnt, cadence and location stats!

There are a lot of companies selling really small and portable GPS tracking devices, they are basically marketed and sold to elder people who are suffering from memory loss or have a tendency to walk out of the house and forget where they are, can surely use such devices in bikes as well as cycles.

          Two problems:

          1. Source of Power
          2. Erratic/No GPS signal if its cloudy or its in a tunnel/basement/etc

The cheapest idea would be to buy a used, low-end android phone (available 2.5 - 3k) and a monthly 2G plan (available as cheap as rs.50 per month) and install it conspicuously on your bike (inside the fairing/under the seats/similar) and then install a SMS-activated app (like theft aware). These apps don't need the GPS to remain ON all the time. When you send an SMS to the bikephone, the GPS will get activated and will send you the current position of the phone(and hence, the bike)

You will need to charge it every night, though

Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

You're definitely not going to leave the phone on the seat/instrument console for him to find and play Angry Birds. :P

Well, in that case, even the standalone GPS unit will be helpless. Only a manufacturer-equipped unit securely located somewhere deep in the underbelly can act as an effective anti-theft device.

Well as per my opinion the device should be activated once anyone tries to play any tricks on the bike like trying to open it with different key or apply certain amount of pressure on the bike. If you guys remember and if I am not wrong an alarm use to come with bajaj pulsur that use to sound alarm if you try to fidget.

Something similar to this has a better chance of working out.
