  • Exhausts - Universal Threads

Searched for all content abt exhausts in the site and could not come across any proper ones....
so why not all discussions/quries abt exhausts be discussed in this thread??????

Thanks for the thread I was looking for this one recently and couldnt find either...

This video of Yoshimura Muffler repack shows only one baffle wrapped in rock wool where as How Mufflers Work shows two baffles and a resonating chamber etc...

I know for sure that the poser boy mufflers that we get dont have either of these. Which one of these is a free flow exhaust? can anyone shed some gyan on the importance of baffles in the muffler?

        even i had a confusion ..
someone told me ki if we change our exhaust the beat of the bike will get distrubed and there might be some millege issues ..
i guess we need to re-tune it according to the new exhaust ?

Ohkay, thats anything but obvious, this is the one of the main changes which a free flow exhaust or any performance exhaust bring about, a drastic change in exhaust note.

yeah but we should be carefull in buying aftr markt exhaust ..
there are many cheap ones which F#!$# up the sound ..
i saw a pulsar last nite .. and it was amazing .. the sound was just like a sports bike and even it looked like a free flow ..

i think you can go to a modification store and ask him specificly about
                  PERFORMANCE EXHAUST ..
dont tell them that i want more sound .. ask them about a free flow ..
it will cost just 700-1500 Rs ..

let me add my few cents to this thread.. not all mod shop can make good exhausts....u need a tuner who knows his stuff to come up with a good design...n good exhaust is one which is designed for a specific bike and according to the requirement of the owner...that will be a proper exhaust.....there are basically two different types of exhausts..1) expansion chamber 2) free flow exhausts.

Two strokers use wats called an expansion chamber...the exhaust works based on the timing of the pulse that is generated and gets reflected back by the internals of the exhaust..basically what the exhaust does is this..in a two stroke during the exhaust stage, the exhaust gases are sucked out by the header and sent to the expansion chamber...the chamber can accomodate more amount of gas than the amount of exhaust gas that is being produced...so what happens is the the exhaust valve is kept open for a little longer time than the stock timing so that the exhaust actually sucks out some fresh A/F mixture. At this point in time the combustion chamber is already filled with fresh A/F mixture.(Keep in mind that there is some extra A/F mixture thats being held by the exhaust header). There is a pulse that is created when the exhaust is being sucked out..this pulse travels the length of the header and is reflected back by the end part of the expansion chamber...the length and size of the chamber are all calculated in a way that the reflected pulse will push the extra A/F mixture that was held in the exhaust header back into the combustion chamber just before the exhaust valve closes...effectively increasing the amount of A/F mixture being burned...more mixture=more power...!!! A good tuner will be able to make a chamber for specific needs and will be able to concentrate all the power being made by the chamber within a given range of RPMs...say a midrange exhaust should ideally work from somewhere around 4000RPM to say about 7000RPM with max revs being 10K RPM...that was just an example..

A free flow exhaust is the one that is used by a four stroke engine.Basically consists of two parts...a tuned length header and a free flowing end can or cansiter. The lenght of the header is calculated and the end can flows freely thereby reducing the back pressure which aids in better flowing of the gases...also the length of the header,if correct, will hold the exhaust valve open for just enough time, for the complete scavenging of exhaust gases...and that basically means you can stuff more A/F mixture in your combustion chamber..!! most stock exhaust restrict the amount of gas that is being scavenged by the exhaust inorder to meet the emission and noise requirements.a free flow exhaust will basically get rid of all the restriction and help increase the efficiency of a bike...im not sure about this next point that im going to make but ive read this somewhere...a properly tuned free flow exhaust will actually help improve the mileage since you increase the efficiency of the bike...but after you install a free flow exhaust im sure the wright wrist wont keep quiet..!! :P

That was my contribution to this thread..!! cheers..!!

PS: I have a tectrac exhaust for sale.It was being used on my pulsar 180Dtsi V1.Its a complete system with a tuned length header and free flow endcan.basically a overall pipe with a little more emphasis on midrange power.PM me if interested.Check out the buy/sell section..cheers

Sam, what are these Performance exhausts which can be fitted to normal indian bikes(Below 200cc)..??

@ prashanth ...excelent info dude .. but my only doubt ..
freeflow reduces millege ,, thats what i had heard ..

@inder ..dude ,,perf as in free flow .. increases perf but only 1/10 time ..
mainly used for the roar .. ... i dont think that it cant be fitted below 200 cc ..

U sure its that cheap?? Also i just dont want to end up with a louder[poser] exhaust.I already hate the noise. A smoother exhaust note is welcome. Also what changes can be expected on the performance front after installing a free flow exhaust?? I've heard low end torque decreases a bit and the top speed increases. is that correct?

@ sam: Well what you heard is true bud..but by theory a well designed free flow exhaust will improve the mileage because basically what your doing is increasing the efficiency of the engine by scavenging the exhaust gases more effectively...but in a practical situation nobody is going to put a free flow exhaust to gain more mileage and the sound that a good free flow makes will only encourage you to push the bike harder...=to lesser mileage...simple

and a performance pipe can be made for any engine size...there is no theory that states that below 200cc you cannot have a performance pipe...im running one on my 180...ive seen tuned length pipes for engines as small as 23cc(used in R/c cars)...it all depends on the length of the header and the flow of the canister..!!
