I just bought a KTM Duke 390 like not even a month back, i just got my 1st 1000kms servicing done on saturday. Before i start with the question, ill give you my observations. When i bought the 390 i had to fill it with 'normal' petrol or xtra premium or speed if lucky (i live in noida), highest octane i found on the an experimental way to work one day to dodge traffic , i found a IOC petrol pump with 93, so i tanked up. Now, since the start i have noticed a constant LOWEST mileage of 26 kmpl, when i say lowest is like in bumper to bumper traffic maharani bagh to DND types, always on the first gear etc. and a max of 33 kmpl. which is very acceptable and i had no issues with that.
Now , got my first service 1000 kms serivce done on saturday, and i met another fellow 390er , i struck a convo with him regarding the bike and asked the general overall feedback, in which he also mentioned he gets a max of 26 kmpl and uses speed 97 octane, so i thought after service id go down to the location he said speed 97 is available and tank up and continue to do so forever. Now eversince i tanked up with Speed 97 (the BP before moolchand), i have been consistently getting really bad mileage like ive seen as low as 13 kmpl and highest is 26 kmpl (like the guy i met at the ktm service station mentioned who was also usin 97 octane). Since then , im still runnin on the same tank and still driving exactly the same way i have since day 1 as u cant change much of ur driving style in full blown office traffic it will always be bad, but why this huge difference in mileage after a higher octane (highest) octane fuel ?? im so confused as i was reading and i knew there is sum relation between compression ratio and the octane of fuel (denser/ less denser) etc.
So is that causing the decreased mileage ? because i thought i should be getting an increased or atleast a little better mileage after the first service ? im heavily confused can anyone shed some light on this ? and as a closing note, a point to remember im still on that 97 octance tank, so i havent gotten a chance to try the lower octane again. One point to ponder is, if it matters, the 'indian' 390 has it mentioned on the manual to use 91 octane or better, while the exported ones have 95 octane or better on them ? have the indian bikes been tuned to run on crappier fuel ? HELP!!
