this is wat i found from a site....

The whole "starting your bike in cold weather" thing can be a big problem in cold. There are three reasons why bikes are hard to start when it is cold. Reason 1 - Gasoline, like any other liquid, evaporates less when it is cold. You have seen this -- if you pour water onto a hot sidewalk it will evaporate a lot faster than it will from a cooler place like a shady sidewalk. When it gets really cold, gasoline evaporates slowly so it is harder to burn it (the gasoline must be vaporized to burn). Sometimes you will see people spray ether into their engines in cold weather to help them start -- ether evaporates better than gasoline in cold weather.
Reason 2 - Oil gets a lot thicker in cold weather. You probably know that cold pancake syrup or honey from the refrigerator is a lot thicker than hot syrup or honey. Oil does the same thing. So when you try to start a cold engine, the engine has to push around the cold, gooey oil and that makes it harder for the engine to spin. In really cold places people must use synthetic motor oils because these oils stay liquid in cold temperatures.
*Re*ason 3 - Batteries have problems in cold weather, too. A battery is a can full of chemicals that produce electrons. The chemical reactions inside of batteries take place more slowly when the battery is cold, so the battery produces fewer electrons. The starter motor therefore has less energy to work with when it tries to start the engine, and this causes the engine to crank slowly.

I can't understand the point there.. If its said as a maintenance free battery then why there is a need for check up and how does it differ from other cells??
Batteries such as "Amaron zero maintenance batteries are really maintenance free as the cells are sealed and when the "Magic Eye" is no more "Green" you have to charge the battery. No facility for filling electrolyte.

Where as Exide type batteries (even though called "Maintenance Free") have filling provision with "O"-Ring seals. and need to fill up occassionally.

            Type

            Low maintenance
(non-sealed) and maintenance free (non-sealed or sealed) are the two most common types of car batteries.

The advantages of maintenance free batteries are less preventative maintenance, longer life, faster recharging, greater overcharge resistance, reduced terminal corrosion and longer shelf life, but they are more prone to deep discharge (dead battery) failures due to increased shedding of active plate material.

In hot climates, buying non-sealed batteries is recommended because a sealed battery will not allow you to add water when required, or to test the specific gravity with an external hydrometer. Some manufacturers introduced a third type of car battery, "dual", that combined a standard battery with switchable emergency backup cells. For about the same cost a better approach was to buy two batteries and isolate them.

It is best to buy a commercial or AMG battery for excessive vibration applications. Car batteries are specially designed for high initial cranking amps (usually for five to 15 seconds) to start an engine; whereas, deep cycle (or marine) batteries are designed for prolonged discharges at lower amperage.

A "dual marine" battery is a compromise between a car and deep cycle battery; However, a car battery will give you the best performance in a car. For

, a car battery is used to start the engine and a deep cycle battery is used to power the accessories. The batteries are connected to a diode isolator and both are automatically recharged by the RV's charging system when engine is running.

                Batteries

Let us use this thread for discussing about:
Various types&brands of batteries available (low/maintenance free etc.),
                Battery care
Dealing with issues related to battery/charging system
                and others.

I will add one article from my side, which I found for testing the voltage across terminals of a 12V battery, starting test, load test, alternator test etc. Though the article is meant for cars, it can be used for our bikes too, since they also have 12V batteries.

                        Battery Upgrade for Yamaha FZ

                        Hello all,
I own a Yamaha FZ16 bike. It has a 5Ah battery. I want to increase it to 9Ah so that I can use a 60W HeadLamp (stock lamp is 35W). Can I directly replace it or is some extra circuitry needed.

Which is the best MF battery for 9Ah. I got Amaron and Exide as options. Amaron giving an amazing 5 yr warranty as opposed to Exides 1.5yrs. Can you give me some indication of prices too.

                        Thanks in advance.

You need to re-coil the electrical system. You can't straight away a higher AH battery. Go for Amaron.

ive never put distilled water in the batter on my own. ive always relied on the SVC guys or mechanic for this, but i want to start doing it on my own.

Where will i get distiled water from? and after opening the battery case, where am i supposed to fill this water? and in what condition of the bike? (i mean, when the engine is hot or cold)

                              thanks
