  • @ andy you can fit even a AGP 8X card but you will need to check the voltage of your 4x slot and the card it should match perfectly or else your comp will go for a toss.for GTA 4 you will need a whole new system...if your on a tight budget i would suggest you this config

AMD 2 x2 240,2GB ram transcend and a radeon HD 4670...this is the best VFM config avialable today!!!

      • Brother if u wanna play GTA 4 at high fps u should invest in a very good graphics card rather than spending high on CPU and the MOBO then putting a crap GFX card in it.Well AMD cpu's are hot selling amongst the gamers cause they can be overclocked very easily and those black edition are the best amongst them as they have unlocked multipliers. And keep in mind if ur budget exceeds ditch the quad core get a triple core or a dual core and invest in a good graphics card......maybe a Hd 5000 series, gtx 200 series from nvidia. after u make a nice gaming rig do look out for a good cooling technique to cool ur pc. And to what extent u can spend on ur pc ????.

Darn! I so want to play that title, but haven't really been able to do so. I heard it's a lot better than the first part - both in terms of gameplay and graphics!

                • Hi,

I am about a buy a new laptop within a month. I have narrowed down to buy dell inspiron.
                  Budget 46K max.

                  Spec. I am looking for:
                  Core i3
                  320GB HDD (250GB atleast)
                  15 inch screen (atleast)
                  Not worried about weight
                  6 cell battery atleast
Graphics card atleast 512MB - directx 11 compliant
                  With DVD writer

                  Purpose for using:
                  1. Photoshop - car / bike designing
                  2. May be I install 3d soft (maya or something like that) in the future...So I need some graphics
                  3. Some cool latest NFS games

I have looked the following link:-
Inspiron 15R Laptop Details | Dell India

These 2 are having some good specs.
                  Dell™ Inspiron 15R New Laptop (T540506IN8) - ~ 37K [512MB grap]
                  Dell™ Inspiron 15R New Laptop (T540509IN8) - ~ 42K [1 GB grap]

I want to know the difference between the 512MB and the 1GB graphics card. Is it really worth enough to spend 5K for 1GB graphics laptop ?

Please pour in your suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Both laptops have a resolution of 1366x768.
For such a low resolution the 1 GB frame buffer will be very rarely beneficial. You can take the 512 MB one.

The 5470 is not a powerful card though. Expect to run modern games at medium settings.

Thanks for the reply Tanay. So Graphics card size really matters only with screen resolution ?

I want to use my laptop for some more years. As today's applications require more than the omnipresent 64MB (for ex: Aero theme requires 128MB - Vista, I think).

I don't want to run games at highest settings, I want to play most of the games with the lowest settings.

Also I want to install graphics intensive applications without worrying about my hardware. Or any other recommendations ? Any other laptops from Dell ?

                      Thanks.

                      • Yes, in most cases the resolution is what determines the required video RAM. For high res (e.g 1920x1080 and so on) a 1 Gb frame buffer provides a noticeable performance increase. At low resolutions and at low settings (AA and AF at low or off) there will be no difference between a 512 MB and 1 GB card. Also, a 5470 is not really designed to handle high textures/high details/high AA and AF etc, these are the usual game settings.

Of course, there may be games/apps that are memory hogs, like GTA 4 but the majority are equal at lower settings and resolutions.

A 5470 will be able to run your apps for a few years without much of a problem. No worries on the hardware front. But keep in mind that you would need to run current and forthcoming games at medium/low settings.

Dell is offering only a 5470 in most of their laptops. Some even have a 4570 or weaker card. No point in the others, unless you can go in for an expensive Alienware laptop.(overpriced)

                        • Thanks for your reply tanay, it cleared most of my doubts regarding the display / games / graphics card association.
One more doubt, What about installing high end 3D graphics s/w ? Here too the screen resolution plays a role ? and 1GB is useless ?

                          Comment

                          • The apps you plan to use, like PS/3DS Max or perhaps ANSYS etc will run just fine. In these apps, while you work in 2D mode, the graphics card utilization is similar to working on the windows desktop. Only when you work in 3D will the card be significantly used and that too much lesser than what a game would use.

Thus, no worries on the apps front too. Whatever card can run games fine, can run apps fine as well, and we are not talking about the professional workstation cards here.

a good gta4 compatible desktop should contain 2.4Ghz c2d, min 4 gb ram, and a 1gb graphic card that too in the 8xxx or 9xxx nvidia.....

i have a 8800mgtx in my lappy and was not able to play the game in ultra high graphics.... i dont know why they give such high graphics if nobody can use them.....
