  • Heart vs Mind: P180 or Dazzler?

    Hey guys,
I'm planning to buy a bike in a month's time. Have been utterly confused between the Pulsar 180 and the CB Unicorn Dazzler.

Here're some factors which usually influence a bike purchase decision:

My daily office travel is about 9+9 kms in Delhi

Not a worry for me if my bike gives me an average of at least 45kmpl

My girlfriend lives 40kms away in greater noida. Of those 40 kms, almost 30 of which is part of expressways which I would generally like to eat up as fast as I can. (My friend's avenger at 90kph makes quite the racket, hence I'm pre-dispositioned to a higher cc/bhp bike)

My gf likes the P180's looks better (yeah, i know.. why am i even confused then, eh?)

Since I'm somewhat drawn towards the 180 already, here're a few queries:
    Handling:
    1. How does the new one with the elliptical swingarm and the fatter tyres brake? I've ridden only the 150's (that too, DTSi ver. 1 and UG2) and they have been horrendous under braking. I know the unicorn's are brilliant under braking.

    2. High speed stability? I believe the only time i'd be exposed to my bike's weaknesses is in those longer runs since in city traffic, most modern bikes (upwards of 150cc) are generally unproblematic.

    Refinement:
Ok, so comparing Honda and Bajaj is a bad idea, but still. How're the Pulsar engines doing now? From the bikes i've seen my friends owning, they start losing their refinement a few month's down the line. I'm usually compulsive about the gadgets I own so I think i'd be very particular about the service schedules and riding techniques to ensure things dont go bad.

    Comfort:
Does the sportier stance of the 180 make it less favourable for long rides? Does the dazzler too have a similiar stance? I know the unicorn with the higher handle bars was a breeze to ride in both city and on the highways.

The sole reason why I'm even considering the Dazzler is because of the quality and the handling that I've seen in the Unicorn. However, I am wary of the fact that it would *probably* considerably underperform on a stretch of 25kms of flat expressway when compared to the P180. My only worries with the 180 is the handling and the quality/life issue for which i need some input from you guys, preferably owners.

Thanks! and sorry for the long post.

      Refinement, Quality, Comfort = Dazzler

      Performance = P180
      ride both and decide
      Don't Honk Unnecessarily

Although the new 180 has reported such figures but if mileage is a strict 'at least 45' consider Dazzler.

        Pulsar 180

Everything on the Pulsar has improved leaps and bounds but still Dazzler is better at harsh breaking.

        2. High speed stability? I believe the only time i'd be exposed to my bike's weaknesses is in those longer runs since in city traffic, most modern bikes (upwards of 150cc) are generally unproblematic.
Dazzler is a more stable bike at high speeds however, also consider that Dazzlers 'high speed' and 180s 'high speeds' would vary...

        Refinement:

This 180cc engine has been working for Bajaj for almost a decade now. With each iteration bike has imrproved on refinement. The latest variant is very good combo of refinement + adrenalin = FUN
Dazzler is obviously more refined in strict terms but that might make rides a little monotonos and boring... (at least for me)

Dazzler comes with older Unicorn like similar like ride posture, commuterish. 180 is made sporty in comparison with rear set footpegs and clip ons...
Comfort wise Dazzler is obviously better.

With a good enough lifespan of around a decade, Bajajs 150 and 180cc engine has become reasonably reliable and refined.
Finally, my take: Follow your heart..
        2002 - Pulsar 150 Classic (Still owned)
        2005 - Pulsar 150 Dtsi (Still owned)
        2006 - Eterno (sold)
        2008 - Dio (Owned)
        2009 - Pulsar 220 DTSi

Hmmm... A friend of mine was of the opinion that that the forward sitting posture might be a trouble for riding continuously over an hour or something. Is it too glaring a problem with the 180s?

The biggest factor in making a decision is those long rides. Having been through those greater noida trips mostly on my friend's discover 125, I long for a powerful bike which I wouldn't be worried about pushing.

Go for whichever gives you more power; eventually you'll crave for it.

I own a Pulsar 135LS. It has similar posture, more like Pulsar 220. P220 or P135LS seats are stiffer than P180. Sitting posture is not a problem in those bikes. But I usually take a rest after 60-65km to avoid lower pain. P180 is more comfortable in those regards. I suppose you need to take a brake after 100km. Till then it will smooth. And obviously I usually ride slow, at 40-45kmph, so you can stretch the time a little more. I think for your purpose, It will be very suitable.

I can also suggest another bike. Suzuki GS150R. I felt this to be smoothest among the lot for long rides.

Do take your time and do test rides extensively before deciding.

Oh, and yes, Pulsar 180 UG4 has improved a damn lot, and you are gonna love this bike.

The Dazzler is better in long term ownership, ride quality and engine smoothness. But Pulsar is not that far behind either. If you can take proper care/maintanence of the bike, Pulsar should do you good.
I always thought that if Yamaha, Honda or Suzuki made the pulsars with their reliability it should cost you above 1 lakh. What I am saying is, Pulsar gives you lot more if you can ignore some differences and will does serve you good if not better if you look after it well.

In the end, no can actually tell you to choose between "your" mind and "your" heart. If you aren't too much in love with the Pulsar then go for the Dazzler and if you are, follow your heart.

the fat tyres of pulsar do offer a good grip on the road & hence a better braking. But still the dazzler leads in the braking due to its low weight & rear disc brake. The high speed stability as per me the pulsar should win due to its added weight. The life of both the vehicles are nearly equal but still in the long term reliability the dazzler has an edge. But sometimes it depends on your luck also
From mileage wise the dazzler is the clear winner with a lead of around 15-20kmpl & topspeed wise it is vice versa. The cost of both the vehicles is also nearly equal.
So Better have a test drive & go with your heart.

Thanks for the input guys. Was exactly what I was looking for. I am pretty much made up on the Pulsar now.

As someone above pointed out, I believe power is what i'd crave for the most. I really need a bike which can make those high speed trips with ease. I don't have any reason to believe a Dazzler wouldn't but it certainly would not do it as well as the Pulsar would.

As for the maintenance and all, I'm pretty sure I'll hound the SVC guys into looking into every little thing. After all, forums like these are an apt place to know more about one's machine.

P180 UG4 is a lot smoother than the older variants and it is more powerful than the Dazzler, also P180 is a bigger and longer bike with fatter tyres and so it is better at higher speeds. And if people say both return the same mileage then obviously Pulsar is a better choice as you will be going faster than the dazzler with the same amount of fuel burning. More power at the same mileage obviously sounds better ain't it?
Also don't worry about reliability much as it all depends on how you maintain your bike. I have seen a unicorn fall apart in just a year.It happened because the owner abused it a lot. I have seen first gen unicorns still running strong. Same goes for pulsars also.
