  • Is there a Geared scooter surviving in our country??

I have been out of the scooter scene for over a decade and even back then it was limited to a few pillion rides on the back seat of my Friends. My then girlfriend (now wife) used to ride a good old Chetak. After years, she has expressed a desire to go back to the riding scene and I was planning to help her buy a nice funky geared scooter. I was in for a rude shock when I realised that of all these fancy bike companies - none of them has an established geared scooter brand. Imagine my shock when almost all bike companies in the world have launched Superbikes and I can name several over 1000cc bikes that are available here, I can't find one good scooter. Or am I missing something. I remember Kinetic planning to launch something called an Italiano series of which Blaze was the first bike with several amazing looking bikes to follow,I remember downloading some pictures in 2007 from the about to be launched range. Today google informs me that Kinetic was bought by Mahindra, and blaze has been discontinued.
There was some news on Piaggio planning to launch Vespa in Mar2010, the website of Piaggio however is silent. Eterno has been discontinued by Honda?
    My Questions are pretty simple:
Are there few good geared scooters left in this country?
    If yes, any recommendations?
Are there any confirmed launches worth waiting for?
Or should I give it up and ask her to buy a scootie?
Or even better, teach her to ride the electra???????

    Please help!!!!!
I ride in just 2 weather conditions...
    1.When it rains
    2. When it doesn't

No geared scooter in production in India as of now. Please do not wait for any future launches; it would be an eternal wait. Please buy a Honda Dio/Activa/Aviator or TVS Wego for your girlfriend for the timebeing. You can sell the gearless scooter in case if there are any geared scooter launch from Vespa.

I would personally suggest Honda Aviator with disc brakes. Excellent ride quality and handling. TVS Wego is next best option.

Honda Dio comes at cheaper price and is a great VFM scooter.

Maybe you can find a Honda Eterno for her and by that I mean a used one. I don't think it is being sold still. or Is it?

hmmmmmm I know I mite sound odd but if she has already ridden the Chetak, though it isn't as good in the handling/braking department, it definetly gets the rider more involved. Back in india there is an aunt not very far from my place who still moves about on a chetak and I have been seeing her ride it for the last almost 2decades. Maybe you can find a Chetak and get it fully restored for her.

If the "geared" part isn't really a concern then there are a lot of models from Honda/Suzuki/Mahindra - haven't really been following the scooters so not sure if Bajaj still is making any yet.

Btw here in Jeddah I saw a 650cc super luxurious massive scooter at the Suzuki showroom

This days there are NV ads flashing all over the national television, they have already launched the 2 stroke and 4 stroke scooters.

          Have a look at them

Aviator Sounds good and appears to be the best available option.

Eterno is not sold, I am not too sure about a used one. I am sure there are tons of used chetaks lying around.

650 cc scooter sounds good, I remember seeing a BMW scooter with a roof in Paris, it would feel like heaven in Mumbai monsoons. But then back home we have to live within our limits. 1 SBK in family is enough.

Just checked on the net, apparently they sell only in Delhi and do not have a dealer in Mumbai
