  • From Activa to bike. Need help.!

    Hello folks.!
I'm a 6ft 70kg 20yr old student from Mumbai looking for a bike in the cheaper side of 1 lac to replace my Activa as daily commute to my college.

    Now for some facts:
I am really new to the world of geared bikes. So new infact that I can still recall vividly whatever sparse memories I have of riding them.Jotting them down here:
HH Passion: Learnt riding on this bike. Didn't have my Activa in those days, so had lots of trouble balancing myself while maintaining perfect harmony between clutch release and throttle opening (which I still can't manage properly.)
CT100: Took this one to college once when my Activa was getting serviced. That was the day I realized why Gearless doesn't always suck when compared to Geared. My Activa could smoke the living daylights out of this clunky contraption any day.!
Pulsar 150: Finally a real bike worth riding.! The way it glided over potholes was something my Activa-sprained back could thank the Gods for.! Trouble started when the red signal showed up and my unaccustomed-to-bikes legs fiddled with the gears endlessly to find the elusive neutral. Both the previous bikes were miles better in this one regard.
HH Karizma R: If I hadn't learned about xBhp and consequently about this bike's main competitors, I would have bought this rocket of a bike eyes-closed. No matter the gear you are in, nevermind the speed you are doing, open the throttle even fractionally and this bike literally jets, sets and goes.! Looks extremely royal too. The only bike among the ones I have ridden that I would love to own.

Now coming to main purpose of the thread. As you must have picked up already, I am a total newbie to anything bikes. What I am looking for in my bike are (in order of importance):
    1) Performance and Fuel economy: Both are topmost priorities. Can't sacrifice one for another.
    2) Reliability: My busy college and study schedule leaves me with hardly any time to spend on petty issues that may crop up on an unreliable bike.
    3) Looks: I'm a 20 yr old youngster in a Mumbai college afterall.! :P

Based on my current (lack of) knowledge about various bikes available in the market, I have no preferences yet. *So you guys have a huge spectrum to recommend from.

Exactly like you was my condition, few years back. I never knew much about geared bikes. Hence being skeptical I got activa. Rode for few months got bored. Out of mere frustration sold it out on spot & went to get a geared motorcycle. Initially, decided on unicorn, then cbz xtreme, then pulsar... Finally saw this sparkling beauty standing & got the Karizma. No regrets, so far.!!
Get it & Stay smiling forever.!!

Karizma R was indeed my one and only choice before I got to know about xBhp. But after reading here about other bikes that fit my budget, I wanna know how they fare when compared to Zma R. I'm talking about P220 FZ series here (add a few others too). How do these bikes fare on smooth empty highways.? On crowded and pot-holed roads.? How much do they drink on either of them.?

Note that I will be riding the bike for 40 kms daily, 20 of which are delight to ride on even on Activa while another 20 are choc-a-bloc Mumbai traffic with nasty potholes to deal with.
The FZ series I find too short in length. Not an admirer of the looks either, except for Fazer.

did you checked the R15 and the apache rtr 180, i would also like to suggest the unicorn, its smooth over potholes and you can comfortable cruise on 80.

You can go for the pulsar 220 dtsi S ( it looks like a p200 but is not)
Looks good, rides well, especially in traffic is easy to flick around. I don't think there are any major issues with this bike. It's the fastest bike in India (apart from Ninja250) FE will be around 35 if you take care of her properly.

If you can wait till Jan or so then you might get more offers from Bajaj, there's a bigger pulsar coming might be around 1 lakh because they are extremely competitive when it comes to pricing

I can definitely wait for a 3-4 more months if any good bike that is supposed to meet my needs is to be released. The Activa will serve me well in the meantime. What bikes are expected to hit the Indian roads within the next few months?
Going through all the threads here has been a really enlightening experience for me.! I find myself a lot more careful Activa rider now just after spending a few days here. All thanks to you bikers.!
