  • Hardcore RE fans: CL350 or Electra (as a Tourer !)

    Hi Everyone !
First of all I would like to thank you all for accepting me on this forum. xBhp is the best !

    Now here is my problem.

I am a bike enthusiast since I can remember. I own a Splendour and I am happy using it. I have driven almost every bike like unicorn, pulsar, glamour and similar one's. I am from a small town in Haryana and I work in Delhi which is around 200 km away from my hometown. I visit my hometown almost every weekend. So, I tour a lot. I need a bike which can do almost 2000 km in a month. My office is 10-12 km from my room. So I need a bike which does 40km (office) daily + 400km (hometown) every week.

I has become very tough to do all this on my splendour. Earlier I was low on cash but now I have decided to buy the bike of my dreams, The Royal Enfield. I am very confused between CL350 and Electra.

    Reasons:

I am 5'4, well built around 74kg . I can handle both bikes but I still want electra's seat to be lowered. Is it possible ? (without effecting the comfort on long tours)

I hate the seat of CL350. It is not at all meant for touring and long distances. I would like to ask whether there is any serious seat modification that has been done on CL350 (with a pic). I know one or two mechanics which can make any kind of seat as long as there is a picture available.

I am confused between Electra and CL350 mainly because of saddle height from ground. I like Electra but the problem is 19' tyres add to it's seat height and if their are any good seat modifications, please show me the pic. To be really honest Electra with a low seat looks very strange and looks like the modification has been forced to suit the rider. Am I wrong ? What do you think ?

I do not want any other bike except RE as it's my childhood dream.

I would request the moderators to accept this query as I see myself as a serious Bulleteer in future and although I know that there are a lot of threads around same two bikes but my problem is very specific (saddle height).

I would request all the members who are serious Bulleteers or RE fans to help me on this topic. I would like to book the bike in next 10 days.

    Regards,
    Zigor

@Zigor..A Hearty welcome to XBHP.... Not sure about the classic as its new to me as well but own an electra 5s 2008 model. There is a nut under the seat which can be used to lower the seat height to a point. If you still want the height to be lowered, you might have to lower the mudguard or chopa few inches off the seat. Hope this helps.

Go for whichever you like. I own a TBTS, but let me remind you that the waiting time for electra is 8 months & booking has been stopped for classic 350. ( in Bangalore )
There ain't no devil, ther'e just God when he's drunk.

          Thanks @JAKRAP and @jayanth b p

Well, as far as I know the situation for bookings is little bit better in Delhi NCR. Still it's a pity that RE has not worked out their production capacity.

I have a question regarding the tyre size. Electra has bigger tyresize (at back) as compared to CL350. I think their could be a considerable difference in saddle height if the tyre could be changed to a smaller one but it will spoil the looks.

Has someone got a picture for this kind of modification ?

For your touring needs a higher seat might pay dividends in the long run, I don't know about the cl's seat since I haven't ridden one yet but I found the new thunderbird's seat quite comfortable. For your height it might be worth a look

              1. technically speaking CL350 is and would be more advanced than electra, (please refer to specifications)..

              2. tyre size from 19" to 18" is reduced for following two reasons:
              - more stable
              - many tyre options are there in 18" size. so better options for replacing.. also can easily go for alloy wheel in 18" size(after market)

rest take a test ride and then decide for yourself..

As the engine is same on all the R.E.s
              only design preference matters..

I have seen tourers preferring thunderBird though, can have a look..

booking a bike ion your home town would be cheaper than delhi and even lesser waiting period i guess

But isn't the Thunderbird more suited to your requirements?

                  Test Ride

All RE bikes now have the same engine. So the only difference is the design and the looks of the bikes.

Considering your case I feel that the Thunderbird will suit you. Even my friend around the same height has Thunderbird and he is quite happy with it.

I will suggest a test ride of all these bikes. Once you ride them then you will be clear which one to go for.

                  Regards,
                  Subu.

                    Thanks everyone for replying.

Going for test drives and asking some experienced friends . I will update the process soon.

I want to mention here that RE bikes have a really bad reputation in terms of maintenance ( as we all know ! ). What I don't get is :

' Why the hell ROYAL ENFIELD can't produce bikes with better quality. We all know they can do better '

                    It's disgusting !

Quality comes at a cost. RE bikes are already above the reach of most people. The small number of enthusiasts might also go somewhere else if the prices are increased. They might take time but they sure are trying to get there. The new UCE REs are much better on maintainance than before.

To answer your question , Yes seats can be lowered , Look around for a good seats guy & check with RE bikers in your area.

Now to your second query of which bike. Specs wise the electra / cl350 are very similar , I prefer the styling of the electra infact I wish enfield had brought out the electra in 500cc variant as well.
