  • Looking for that proverbial hooligan (rtr 160 vs rtr 180 vs p220)

    Hello Guys,
I have had a Karizma now for 2.5 years, so a few days back when my younger brother said he wanted a bike an uncanny smile spread all over my face. The reason was quite simple, karizma though has been great so far never really gave me the mad rush that I wanted, those proverbial moment of hooligan madness. At one point in time I thought I would trade her off with say a 220 but then decided against it. Anyway now that I have the option of getting the best of both the worlds (in terms of reliability and refinement at one side and pure hooliganism on the other) the question comes, which bike?

    I have a budget of around 85K ,

The mileage part although not really important does matter a bit and anything above 40 should be good.

    I have shortlisted 3 bikes

1)RTR 160(hyper edge) :- kept this one because this undoubtly is the most fun to ride bike in the 150 cc segment .The mileage that I have heard is around 45-50 (correct me if am wrong) so the mileage part is taken care of as well. Now the thing that puts me off are the vibrations, from what I know or have read is that the new hyper edge takes care of it to a great extend .request you guys to tell me if its really less vibey now and how bad it is say post 90 also do comment on the mileage.

    2) RTR 180 :- does every thing 160 does but does it way better .mileage what I know is
40-45 (again need your inputs on the same ) at this point in time you could ask me that if RTR 180 can be settled for then what is the 160 doing in the list ,the reason yet again is vibrations. Since I am made to believe that hyper edge takes care of the vibes quite a lot so that why kept it in the list .How vibey is the 180 ?

*I do realize that vibrations are an integral part of apache and to desire an apache with out the vibes is like portraying Pamela Andersons sans the boobies, but my concern is that it should not be unbearable at high speed when we go touring.

    3)Pulsar 220

Would buy the bike in Jan so request you all to help me in making my mind. The maintenance part no matter which bike it is ,is not really an issue

    Regards

Thanks @MG for approving ,point taken.RTR 180 was always the Fav, the only thing that favours the 160 is probably more refinement that the hyper edge brings.

Both a180 and p220 are powerful enough to make the hair at the back of your neck stand in attention!!
i've been riding p220 for quite some time and am very impressed by the performance...
only concerns for me are its long turning radius and difficulty in managing sharp turns at moderate to high speeds...
mileage is around 35kmpl after 2k kms done...
A180 on the other hand is more fun to ride(acc. to me)...
you can easily zip.. zap... zooom... in traffic...
brakes are perfect and acceleration is great....
didn't get a chance to take it above 80 but the feel till then was great....
my friend reports the average to be around 40kmpl with rash driving....
        Choose wisely!!!
Men who still dream of being a pilot or an astronaut are yet to ride a motorcycle.

Vibes are felt in the limited range of 4.5-6.5K (or 4-6K) RPM buddy. After that, the machine is smooth at higher RPMs. Don't worry about that. I've ridden 3 RTR180s (one being my own, and the other one is also ridden almost every 3-4th day by me for a month). All of them have same characteristics about vibes. [Yes, I know every Apache (or any other) under same conditions behave same, but this is to make your doubts even more clearer). Some critics just exaggerate this issue like anything, due to which people think that it has vibes at almost whole range of it. Yes, vibes are the characteristics of Apache but they are limited as I said earlier, and, you'll start loving it coz it gives you the feel of RAW POWER under your seat

Even though it is not among your shortlisted choices, you want a hooligan? Get the R15. It is the best among them all!

Haven't ridden the new 160 but im sure the 180 is faster than 160 and loses to the 220 only on the highway. Rest, the 180 is just one helluva bike.

RTR 180 dominates most bikes when it comes to riding within city traffic. Its the best handler after R-15. Initially, the vibrations were a turn off but eventually i got used to it and now doesn't feel anything at all. BTW, am a ex karizma owner and feel that the 180 is way better than zma in terms of handling, feel and much easier to ride fast. Honestly after getting used to 180, i feel a bit uncomfortable riding fast on a zma.

Karizma is surely the best sports tourer in India. No doubts about that

@abhijeet:- R15 is way off my budget buddy and some how the peaky power delivery is not something I like that much.
@Vivek :- That’s the problem with ZMA ,true its refined and the engine is bullet proof. It jus never gives you the mad rush am glad to hear that RTR 180 does it way better. Thanks for your words.
                          @Garry :- Thanks buddy .

Ok guys I heard a weird thing yesterday, I happen to meet a guy who has a 180 ,he was telling me that in terms of power 180 has no match but he knows this for a fact that 160 hyper edge is more refined than the 180 and this is partially cause they both share the same gear box and this is why the 180 is a little more vibey . Any comments on this one ?

Bro i own both P220 and rtr180,both are superb machines in their own way.
rtr is more of a street fighter than P220,u can easily zip zap through the traffic and it is a light weight machine hence more manuverabilty than p220 0-100 figures are almost equal for two machines but as a light weight machine u feel more vigorous acceleration than p220.vibes are manegable(more in 4k-6k range) once it cross that range itz smooth.Best handler, cornering ability(take care about the stock tvs tyres)better braking power than p220.
On other hand P220 is much torquey, more powerful.Nothing beats it in highways, more of a tourer, high speed stabilty(because of its weight),more refined engine.Fairing vibration is rectified in the 2010 version(felt no vibration in 120+ speeds)better stock lights(55w)..
A LOST RACE IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN A LOST LIMB

@vishnu many many thanks for your inputs it has cleared my doubts considerably ,just waiting for the bank process to get over which frustratingly would take another 10 days I believe, would ride them both and would ride away with one of them. But some thing tells me that 180 should be more fun to ride.

Btw you are one lucky guy bro to have both these hot chicks with you.
