  • Honda CB Twister vs Bajaj Discover DTS-Si 100

    Hello guys. A newbie here.

I am in a very confused situation. I am looking to buy a commuter bike in 100cc segment.

I have finally shortlisted down to the two bikes mentioned in the title. This is where i need advise from all you guys. Let me list down the point by point assessment of requirements for me:

    1) Mileage is a no. 1 priority for me. From what i have heard, read and seen from other people's experiences, the CB returns a decent mileage of 60-65 kmpl overall, as compared to discover's 70-75 kmpl. Not much difference there, but considering ive read many members mileage review here on ownership experience thread, i am a bit worried if CB will give the overall mileage of 60-65 kmpl. No such doubt there in case of Discover 100. It will deliver that mileage figure.

    2) Comfort. I am into sales, so need to travel sometimes large, sometimes small distances, 30 to 125 kms. Sometimes even more. So comfort is very important for me. Discover 100 has a really comfortable seat, and absorbed the bumps very easily during my test ride. Handlebar was also at a very comfortable position. This when compared to when i sat on the CB, the seat was a bit hard to begin with, and i have my doubts whether it will provide comfort during long journeys. Also, the handlebar position makes you sit a bit in forward stance, rather than the upright position in discover. I am okay with it for short journeys, but i have my doubts for longer journeys.

    3) The missing 5th gear in the CB. Oh, how i missed it even in my short test ride. I wonder how will i feel when i am riding for over 70 kms and there is no 5th gear to put the bike into. Not necessarily a deal breaker, considering i will mostly drive in economy range of 50-60 kmph, but a barrier nonetheless.

    4) The missing trip meter in CB. As i mentioned im into sales, i need to know daily how many km's ive traveled. Calculating from the main meter every time can become a sour experience after some time. No such problems with Discover 100 as it has a tripmeter.

    5) What else, well i am still in my mid-twenties, and i really dig the cool looks of CB, and my heart is leaning towards it. But if i look into other aspects from a practical point of view, the Discover 100 makes more sense.

I hope you now know my dilemma and my reason for starting this thread.

Please advise guys. I need to buy one of them soon. Any and all comments will help me reach closer to that decision. Right now, i am in splits-mind.

    Thanks.

      Discover 100cc

Hi, i have been using the Discover 100cc dts si since mar-10 and i have covered more than 11k kilometers in less than a year, i would mention the plus and minus points that might help you with your purchase decision (please note i have not tested the cb twister so i have not got much information regarding the same).

      plus
      good mileage (approx 75)
      cheap spares (easy to maintain)
      Good network of service stations

      minus
Braking is not that great (doesn't stop on the spot)
When i bought the bike platina 125cc was cheaper than Discover 100cc (Don't know now)
      Looks (when compared to twister)

I would perfer the Discover over CB twister considering my usage.

Go for the discover as it gives more than 75km/lt if ridden sanely, whereas the twister delivers around 60..

I think this is one query.. where I'll have to suggest listening to your mind rather than heart Though you like the looks of Twister.. buying Discover is way more practical considering your requirements. So, go with Discover here.. gap in mileage figures will make huge difference in running costs over the long term.. considering that you ride a lot, Discover should be the one for you.

Hi Masterminds. Since you've used the discover extensively, i'd like to ask you a few questions:

            1) Have you faced any troubles from the bike, mechanically? After clocking 11k kms, how is the performance of the engine now? and how is the mileage now?

            2) What is the average speed you drive to achieve a mileage of 75 kmpl?

            3) At what speeds did you do the running-in of the engine and for how many kms?

            4) I hear the brake wears off rather sooner. Any comments on this based on your driving experience?

            5) Finally, how is the handling of the bike in rains and other wet/sloshy conditions?

Hi vrugonnab. I agree with you completely. But the thing is that i will use the bike for a decent time-period of 2 years atleast, maybe even more. I'm not sure if the styling of discover will still please me after that much time. I'm sure i will always like the looks of twister. Can't say the same for the discover. But let's see, based on the replies on this thread, the Discover is leading from Twister 3-0 as of now.

Hoping for more replies from you guys.

            Thanks.

              Discover-millage and a perfect commuter.
I think Discover suits you the best. Its more comfortable as seats are wide.and it doesnt look bad...It still looks smart.

Go for the Discover. It is much more practical for your usage. Cheaper than the twister to buy and maintain, also, the mileage difference will ensure you have less frequency visiting petrol bunks.

I'd suggest you not to look into packaging but the real product....
discover has 5 speed transmission, better mileage, better service network...
these are the things which'll please you in long term....

Below are my answers in Bold, please feel free to ask any other questions if you have.

Hi Masterminds. Since you've used the discover extensively, i'd like to ask you a few questions:

                    1) Have you faced any troubles from the bike, mechanically? After clocking 11k kms, how is the performance of the engine now? and how is the mileage now?

No Issues at all, still same mileage (approx 75)

                    2) What is the average speed you drive to achieve a mileage of 75 kmpl?

I drive to work early in the morning,so no traffic. Plus my Journey is mostly on highways, so i ride at around approx 55 kmph most of the time.

                    3) At what speeds did you do the running-in of the engine and for how many kms?

The speed thats were maintained were as per the manual (i don't remember exactly) . but i think it was 43kmph till 1000kms and then after that around 55kmph till 2000 kms.

                    4) I hear the brake wears off rather sooner. Any comments on this based on your driving experience?

The brakes don't wear off soon in my case, but they are not to my expectations (takes a lot of time to stop), could be because of the drum brakes.

                    5) Finally, how is the handling of the bike in rains and other wet/sloshy conditions?

Handles ok, but you need to keep your speed in control (read thin tyres ) and also the braking distance will increase and will not be that effective, so if you brake hard at this point the bike will skid.

Thanks for all the reply guys. I am surely leaning towards the popular opinion on this thread.

Though i'd love to hear the perspective of some of the cb-twister owners too. Guys, please come forward and provide your insights as well. Would be highly appreciated. I might be prejudicing about my opinions regarding the twister as i have only ridden it for a small test ride. So all your opinions are welcome.

                      Thanks.

Discove100 is definitely a better bike than cb-twister.

look at the rear end of twister man......it looks so skinny.....personally i dont like twister.

you can also consider pulsar 135 or honda stunner. good looking bikes with decent average and many more plus points.

                          To the original poster:
You have given a fairly comprehensive requirement list. So Discover seems suitable to your needs.

I own a Twister so I will be happy to answer any specific questions.
As you already know, the Twister doesn't come with a 5th gear. After 8 months of owning it, I still look for the 5th gear while riding it. It doesn't come with a trip meter, PASS SWITCH (useful for travelling on highways), engine kill switch or Tachometer. These are useful tools for your line of work, so pause and let this sink into your head even if your heart yearns for the twister.

Besides, remember that for the price of a Discover 100, the comparable Twister will NOT COME with a DISK BRAKE or self starter (possibly). So what advantage does the Twister really have other than looks?

I rode about 50-70 KMs once and yes, my bottoms were aching. No I didn't experience pain in my back.

If you want to have the satisfaction of owning a classy bike, why not buy a Honda Unicorn (used). Fuel Efficiency will disappoint, but if you can live with that (do the math - or PM me for a Google spreadsheet), I believe it will fit your needs much better. As always, don't decide in haste.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Booked the Bajaj Discover Dts-si 100.

Will take delivery tomorrow or day after.

Any pointers for PDI? Things specifically to look for before taking the delivery.

I am a little skeptical about receiving a piece from an old lot of bikes. How to check whether the bike i am being given is from the fresh/latest lot?

Thanks a ton guys for helping me in making my decision.
