  • Buying an RE in Bangalore

    Hey Buddies,

I`m looking to buy an used Enfield in Bangalore. Prefer the Thunderbird for its
ride style. I`ve never/none of my close pals have owned an Enfield, so I`m pretty new. I`m getting it with an aim for long long rides.

Ive searched around with some of the mechanics on the streets and free ads etc. Ive found a few older ones 2006 Thunderbird models for like 60-65K, the mechanics say its in good shape.

    1.Is TBird the rt choice?
2.How much should i be paying approx?
3.Any leads/contacts(gathered a few from the forum, but havent yet been to all)
4.Is it true there are major reliability issues with the pre 2007 models?
5.I've been told my many that I should get an older enfield(some suggest the 70`s and some the 90`s) and one mechie told me to get an used Machismo. Confuses me

    Any comments/leads would be helpful.
    Thanks,
    TcB

Welcome to xBhp tcb, consider posting about yourself & your rides in the "Who Are You" section

Depends on your taste; Eg, I love the power of C5, but like the looks of TBTS. So your the best judge to decide, after all, you're the one to enjoy the rides.

Depends on...the year of mfg, condition, ODO clock

I wouldn't say reliability issue, but would say to be well taken care. Most of the niggling maintenance have been addressed with the current UCE engine.

Personally to me, from all the discussions on RE, what I've understood is that, the thumping of RE is what everyone is a hardcore fan. The thumping is more to be found with the older gen CI engines. The current UCE (or previous AVL) engines are less thumpers. However, the current UCE has lesser problems & minor complex than the previous gen CI engines, more of rider friendly.

Though I don't own a RE (nor intent to buy one ), a good friend of mine TARC owns a C5 for over a year+ now & has done 22K+ kms of touring. You may want to PM him to take his suggestion.

Hi welcome to XBHP...Another RE Fan

If touring is your option - Any of the RE's are good for it and if you would love the music of thump then go for any Cast Iron Engines, if you are more of a city rider then go for any of the AVL models.

CI Models - you will have to take care of it if you ride at different speeds (Thumps great, little heavy, comfortable in highways than the AVLs - May be few may disagree with this)

AVL - No such maintanence issues

Models to look at - Electra 5s, Machismo 500, Standard 500, Classic 500, Lightning 535 (Not Sure if you may get one in any of the said models immdly)

TB is good, but somehow Im not ok with it (My personal Opinion)
Standard 350 - Not the UCE
            Check out Electra Twin Spark

As aargee said - Its your personal choice on what you want.

            Happy Thumping

@tcb - You need to yell at me for not picking up rameshmadhavan. He owns a RE 535 & several others. No better way to get yourself clarified for all your questions. He knows to explain both from the CI & UCE's perspective.

Hey thanks guys aargee and Ramesh.

Yea somehow most of the truebred Enfield fans dont recommend the TB for reasons(feel of the ride, thump, vibrations, tappet adjustment issues, oil leak issues).
I`m actually open to suggestion. Just that I have some kind of a physical attraction( whatever that means :P) to the TB- the handlebars and the seats and backrest for the pillion and and the dual tach/speedo gauge, gas shocks etc etc.

But my story in short is this. I may be getting shipped out within a year max. My dad never made me hands out(which means Ive never owned/only ridden bikes of friends and relatives and strangers who were nice enough to lend one, so all i have is an extensive set of (not so useful)theoretical knowledge from forums etc on things) and Ive finally saved up for a bike and for touring hopefully the himalayas and hopefully the North east sometime soon.
It was between getting an Enfield(used) and if that didnt happen an RX(/Z) or a Shogun/Shaolin. Finally decided Enfield it shall be.

TBTS is awesome when I drove it(except for the highly muffled refined sound) but used ones are hardly there and 1-2 I could trace cost >90k (and generally the UCE engined variants as such)

I can put around 60-65K now and then spend another 5 on uping it to conditon and another 5 for any modifcations required.

ive been able to locate 2-3 older bullets(350`s ) in keen running condition for arnd 52-55K and a Thunderbird (2006) for about 62K through a mechanic. He says its in good condition.

What do you guys think based on the needs above.
                  Any suggestions would be welcome.
CI/AVL or up my budget by cutting other corners and try for an UCE hearted machine? The few I have spoken have suggested either the late 70`s or the early 90`s models.

                  Let me know,
                  Thanks guys.

Great...if its only for a year or so, then why dont you try the CI itself, you will start loving it, check out for a standard 350 CI and make your hands dirty, but you will enjoy it.

If you have a eye on a TBTS, you can get a well maintained 2007 at around 60 - 70 k, not required to spend, maybe just tweeking and oil / filter, if tyres worn out, those changes, if you are getting something worst than this for that amount than its not worth it.

Check out with few guys in RTMC (Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Club) / Cramster / bikes4sale.in / Quikr / Olx etc, become a member there and you might get lot of leads.

                      Thanks Ramesh!
Ive been checking out on the ads sites and free ads and all that.
Didnt know about RTMC, will try a few opnions there.

So the CI 350 or the TB i guess I should look for.
TBTS are excpensive and almost unavailable in BLore. I think If i get a good one for 60-70 I`ll just pay it and get it home.

Any idea abt the AVL thunderbirds?

                      Thanks.
