  • Current/2011 R15 or used one?

Guys i have booked R15 recently and waiting for the same. Now a thought has invaded my mind. Instead of going for current R15 or hoping and waiting for 2011 R15 how about a used R15 (2008) and spending the saved money on Joel's full performance mods?

What do you guys think? is it easy to find a 2008/9 R15 in good condition in bangalore?

I haven't bought a used bike before. hence for the second option what all the things to look for?

    please advise

well from the rumors it seems that the new r15 is just a cosmetic upgrade. also unless your too desperate try to stay away from used bikes. you never know how they were run in or other such minute details which count in the long run. was in a similar situation and concluded that the current bike was good enough for me so went ahead and bought it. so if you can wait(saying coz the yamaha guys are denying launch of new r15) well and good. if not buy the current bike. nothing can go wrong with either decisions.

Go for the new one. It is not advised to buy a used bike unless and until you know the user very well

kedar3223 and lonely Rider Thanks for the responses.

Even i am also afraid of buying a used one but the price at which i may get just tempted me. So ruling out a used bike!!!!!?

I heard from my Yamaha dealer that they are receiving couple of batches of R15. They may offer one from these lots if the asked color is available.

In this case will it make sense to accept one within one/two weeks? or wait for some more time and check what yamaha comes up with (new R15????)

i cant describe how it feels to be in such a situation - thinking of all logical possibilities

Good thought. Go for a used bike and give it to Joel. You wont repent. No one can make modify R15 as good as him.

As a matter of fact Joel too recommends the same.

you know what? talk directly to the man himself (Joel). [email protected] . i will still maintain that you stay away from used one unless you know the owner and make sure its a genuine product.

                Used (20P10 batch) R15 + Joel's setup = Killer VFM.

Make sure you pick up a good bike. The bike has a strong engine and it can take plenty of hard runs in stock form. Go for it! You'll still save money after Bike+ Mods and a bit of fuel savings too!

                Cheers!

                  Rightly said.

Go for a second hand(Make sure it's in good health) and then get it Joel'd.

What's the 20P10? batch, that's what i'm picking up in a week or so, 2nd hand with less than 1400km on the odo. oh yeah it's in mint condition.
Beware of Bread, don't say I didn't warn you!
More than 98 percent of convicted criminals are bread eaters !
Statistics show that more than 75 % of violent crimes are committed within 24 hours of eating bread !
Bread is known to be extremely addictive. Subjects deprived of bread and given only water, actually begged for bread after just two days !
Bread has been proven to kill. Scientists have now uncovered alarming evidence that 100% of the people who eat bread will eventually die !

                      Thanks for suggestions.

I too see lots of value in the second option. Infact i thought about it only after reading Joel's R15 Performance ECU and KwokFist's Performance Build on my R15 threads

@KwokFist - Thanks for very detailed review But when picking a used one say 10-20K ODO, what all the checks i need to do specifically for R15.

                      R15 owners please comment.

20P10 is basically the old batch of R15s. Non-Racing color versions. You can check this chassis series from below the seat.

Check for any crash history and extent of damage/replacement or repairs if any.

Condition of chain and sprockets F and R.

Check and ensure all electrical are perfectly fine and ensure if any mods were done, the original wiring was untouched!

Check for other mods like fat tyres. Avoid bikes where any part (swingarm) was damaged, altered to accommodate fatter tyre, other modications etc.

If the bike has/had HIDs ensure the original wiring was untouched!

Check for leaks from the radiator, working relays, any major/minor damages on the bike. I've only had to replace my spark plug adapter and speedo sensor once under warranty and got a free radiator replacement done during the replacement drive! So check for these things!

Go to the SVC and check for any known issues, replacement or repairs w.r.t engine. Check for bends/damages to alloys.

10-20K+ on the odo is fine.

Check manual+SVC for service history and insurance for claim history.

Ride the bike and check if it accelerates, brakes and handles like how a stock R15 should; Linear Acceleration, with a slight grunt at the top revs. Progressive braking and neutral handling so to speak.

Look for clutch slippage and find out about the frequency in oil changes and type of oil used in the bike and kms between changes.

Ensure all the documents are in order!

If the bike has been well maintained there shouldn't be ANY problem. Go for it!

I hope this will suffice for now

                        Cheers!

Well, can you please explain what is clutch slippage & false neutral? (OT? )

                            Well,
Buying second hand R15 & then getting it joeled is in my mind too.
I have Karizma & I am very happy with her.
But sometimes, I just feel like I should get a bike which will rev past 8K.
And R15 is the best candidate for it.

                            power9,
You can go for 2nd hand R15 without worries if you are planning to fit Joel's big bore kit + Engine head.
Cause anyway, you will replace engine head, piston, piston rings & piston wall.

Are those the only parts that could be damaged due to bad run in?

It often takes a humiliating overtake to understand that an early jump off the red light won't help them lead the pact. All I want to say is - Go after green.

                              Update:

Feb15 2011: I heard from a reliable source that Yamaha is going to slash the R15 price by 10000 or so in march and not sure about the modifications. After this decided to wait till march even if they offer a bike early.

Around afternoon i got a surprise call from showroom guys, asking me whether i am OK with a Yellow R15 which they just received (i had booked a While LE). I said NO.

After few minutes of the call i felt that i need to take some time, think, decide and then respond. Immediately called them back and requested them to give me few hours; i will get back to them at 4.00PM sharp.

Now the TIMER started - New/Current/Used?.
I called some, mailed some, messaged some asking for opinion/suggestion/advice about 2011 R15(speculated) versus current R15. I troubled some xbhpians as well. Went and bought Auto Car India looking for the full R15 article. Found that the information provided in the article is not much.

Did a paper comparison, found that most of the speculated changes are cosmetic for me. But had my doubts about the engine.

Now its 4.00 PM. I am still undecided

Called showroom guys and requested them to give me few more minutes; that i will call them at 4.30 PM. They said Fine.

After some inputs, felt that R15++ (used/current with Joel's mods) would not be inferior to speculated 2011 R15.

After this thought (already dreaming of "Me & R15"), joyfully called the showroom guys at 4.30PM and told them that i will visit them within few minutes, check the bike and make the payment.
Now comes the shocker (context); They tell me they are already taking the payment for Yellow R15 from someone else!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dint know what to say !!!!!!!!!!!!!

                              Ends Part I
