  • My first bike for daily commuting

    Hi guys,

I'm planning to buy my first bike in chennai for commuting to work everyday. My budget is ~55000.

I will be commuting mainly in city traffic, 150 km a week. I'm 5'8" - 85kgs, my main concern is the lower end bikes might look too small for me. I'm planning to use the bike for only 2 years and upgrade to a higher end one.

Also, since this is my first time riding a geared bike, i would prefer one with a smooth handling if possible. Mileage ~50 is good enough.

Your guidance is much appreciated. Thanks!

Go for Bajaj Pulsar 135LS, ideal for city riding, semi sporty/semi commuter riding posture. Only 120kg, decent mileage upto 70kmpl.

I would recommend you Suzuki Sling shot,
          1. Superb build quality (better than Shine/HH bike)
          2. Superb torque (XTP)
          3. Very good mileage of 50-55kmpl
          4. Best service
          5. Expect very good re-sale value as well
          6. It will mostly 'suit' your physique as well.(5'8",85 kilos)

Extend your budget for Unicorn/Xtreme/GSR, these bikes well suited for your physique.

FYI, P135 has very uncomfortable seating/posture, it costs 60K upwards, it may not suit your physique as well, test ride and check out for your self.

Some of the options available to you are:

            1. Yamaha SX/SZ-X
            2. Bajaj Discover 150
            3. Yamaha SS125
            4. HH Glamour

There may be other options available but I think these are some good options.

If I were you, I would choose the Yamaha SZ/SZ-X
Signals which are timed for 50 Kmph are also timed for 100 Kmph :)

Add excellent ride quality, very good pick up, minimum gearshift in city, highly flickable in traffic, fresh & very good looks and good Yamaha Service Network.

SZ-X have a decent mileage too, you are guaranteed to get atleast 50 KMPL is you are a sane rider.

SZ-X is the one for you buddy. TD it.

Also consider Honda Shine, 125 CC but a very good package in 125 CC range. Good mileage, low maintenance, and Honda's refinement.

                  2. Superb torque (XTP)
                  3. Very good mileage of 50-55kmpl this is ordinary milege. nothing special.
                  4. Best service you are saying that service is better than HH/Bajaj. suzuki has how many ASS in india or in your city.
                  5. Expect very good re-sale value as well. do you expect suzuki sling shot to give better re-sale value than bajaj/HH

Thanks all for the good suggestions. I was leaning towards Discover 150 and SZ-X (SZ-R is 60k+ onroad).

My main preference towards Discover 150cc is the disc brake. On other aspects like riding quality, i like the SZ-X. I wont be exceeding 50 kmph in city commuting. Will the drum brakes be sufficient for it?

I was also looking at YBR 125, is SZ-X much better than YBR?

                          2. Superb torque (XTP) Its down below in the performance ranking in the respective segment. Source: Bikeindia.
                          3. Very good mileage of 50-55kmpl Worst mileage in 125cc segment
                          4. Best service Worst ASS in the country
                          5. Expect very good re-sale value as well No again

Please don't give suggestions that are false or don't make any sense. That guy is putting his hard earned money into something. Have some respect. Please dont just tell him to buy the bikes you like.

@n_sharath: You can look for Discover150/SZ Series under 55K. These are one of the most comfortable 150cc's. After sales service and spare availability is good too. P135 is a machine that beats many of 150cc's around . but its more inclined towards sporty riding. so not as comphy as D150 or SZ.

If you are planning to sell your bike in a year or two, consider Honda Shine. A Bike with very good resale value, decent performer and gives amazing mileage too.

I know that the SZ-R costs more (due to the inclusion of a disc brake and other goodies) which is why I never mentioned it. You can get an SZ/SZ-X within your budget. The prices vary from one city to the other owing to the local taxation laws. e.g. a bike which costs 55k in Delhi would surely costs around 59-60k in Mumbai. So it basically depends on where you live..

Yes, the SZ's drum brake would be sufficient if you don't plan to ride above 50-60 Kmph in the city...on highways, you can always exceed that speed.

The SZ-X is a better overall package than the Discover 150 IMHO. You can buy that bike eyes closed. Don't consider the YBR. It's just not worth the hard earned money. In case you must stick to a 125cc bike, consider SS125 / Honda Shine (with drum brake).
Signals which are timed for 50 Kmph are also timed for 100 Kmph :)

@wanted..& prince : You guys sound as if I am suggesting some stupid bike out of fun ? Have you seen/tested new Slingshot ? Have you tested it's LET ? Do you know the re-sale of old Heat in the market ? Do you think Suzuki is bad company? Do you know it won NDTV bike of year award and couple of more ?

Go and compare OTR of other bikes in the category, and importantly check out it's torque, it has BEST LET among all bikes in India, and that ensures durable engine.

Don't think I'am a fool with sinister motive, you have a suggestion you put it, I have said mine !! I still feel SlingShot is the best in 125cc, you have your own opinion, & I respect it !!
