  • P180 or P220s or A180

Hello everyone,I used to own an RX135 4-speed,With expansion chambers and all..But had to part with my beloved gas guzzler due to financial problems...After a long break from biking,Im on the lookout for a new machine again as my job requires me to travel a lot.I have done a lot of research on these forums,Used the bike selector tool too,But am not satisfied with the amount of information i collected..My biking consists mainly of city riding,Riding in the hills(Shillong,Tura,Karbi Anglong),and occasional touring(300-400kms,4-5 times a month).I have narrowed down my search to P180,A180 and the P220s..Have tested my friends P180 extensively.I like it and i think it can take care of my needs well...But i read somewhere here that the p180 produces just 12.xx Bhp at the rear wheel when dynoed..That really disappointed me a lot.Took a test ride of the A180 too...and wow i was really impressed by this machine..reminded me of my Rx.ABS was awesome too..But the problem is Im a little over 6 feet tall and the bike kinda looks small for my frame. If it was a little bigger,i would have gone for it without a second thought.
Im yet to test the 220..but havent been able to take a test ride as the dealer in my town dosent give test rides of the 220..I have ridden my friends 220fi for some 20 odd kms and i really like its power delivery throughout the range..Does the dtsi perform in the same way?Or is it better than the fi..So i put all my faith on the experts here to guide me through this as i dont want my hard earned money to go down the drain...Please Help.

      I have a P180 UG3, and have tested both the RTR180 and P220 DTSi.

DTSi doesn't have the Fi advantage of instant response, plus it has a longer 5th gear. Some new cams have boosted its power to 21 bhp. 50 kmph at 3000 rpm in 5th gear is maintainable. Midrange and top end is strong no doubt but low end is so-so.

As for your doubts of rear wheel power, every bike looses some power due to "transmission loss".
RTR 180 might seem more powerful than P180 due to lesser weight and hard compound tyres which increase performance, plus the engine which is more powerful and retuned from RTR 160.
Plus RTR has very good handling. Although vibrations might bother you a bit.

If you can adjust to the riding position, get the RTR 180 ABS. Otherwise, P220 naked should do the job! If great headlights are a must, go for faired P220.

The new P180 UG4 is not satisfactory according to me, it got 147 kgs of weight, almost as much as 220 due to 220's chassis parts.
Not recommended unless you're always on highways.

Their weights should matter as you're thinking about hills:

      RTR 180: 137 kgs
      Pulsar180: 147 kgs
      Pulsar 220 naked: 148 kgs
      Pulsar 220 faired: 152 kgs

Buddy i would suggest you to choose between A180 and P220 dtsi.Dtsi variants is more refined than the older fi ones.

you should chose only between A180 or P220. that too according to your built & needs a P220 will suit you better..

My rating would be P220>A180>P180 in terms of performance...
P220(naked) is a real monster when it comes to power, though it lacks a bit in breaking and handling department than the RTR...
I would have wanted you to consider the A180(ABS),but according your built,P220 is your bike...
            I d say,go for it......

As you own a p180,can you please tell me whether it is suitable for rides of around 300kms in the hills? Can it cruise at 70-80kmph comfortably?I never exceed 90 kmph esp. in the hills because of the risk involved plus the poor condition of the highways in the NE..If the p180 can fulfill these criteria easily,I think the 220 will be an overkill for me.(moreover i intend to keep this bike for not more than 3-4 years,as i'l be going for a Ninja.)

^^^ hell.. yeah, 70-80kmph is nothing for P180, it can maintain those speeds very happily, without any effort. In fact, all the bikes you have considered can maintain 70-80 kmph without breaking any sweat.

See, I own Pulsar 180 Upgrade 3... It weighs 140 kgs and can cruise even at 90-100 kmph for a good amount of time.
Last time I went to Jaipur, I took it and was totally satisfied with its performance.

But, now in showrooms, you'll see only Pulsar Upgrade 4 which has a different camshaft for slightly more power. P180 UG 4 too can cruise at 90-100 with ease, but still I suggest P220 naked.

P220 won't be an overkill believe me. At 90-100 kmph in top gear, you'll be doing some 6000 rpm which might return good mileage too.

Nobody suggested you P180 UG4, because it weighs 147 kgs, as much as P220 Naked, for no good reason. But apart from that, it should do great on highway...

By the way, Karizma was and still is the king, when it comes to highways only... Why don't you consider it?

no buddy...the good parts borrowed from its bigger and stable 200 made 180 ug4 heavier, but personally i think that this is a positive point for 180 ug4.some 6 months back i was in same situation like you between p150 and 180, then only considering this 200 goodies and big bike dimensions gone for 180.mileage was only plus point for 150 over 150. but to my surprice it returned 55-60 mileage.

Samarth...do you like 180 with the same 150 pattern?..
it was the long time problem for pulsar family having same design.

just before the launch of 180 ug4, p-180 sale was very low comparing to 150. now look...what whats the sale of 180 ug4...

i am also like the power of a-180, but felt like a very very small bike atleast for me, i am 6'2".
then, vibrations, lighter bike will be unstable at higher speeds..

                    just go for p 180 ug4...have fun

I think ditching the saree guard and Downsizing the tyre to a 100/90 can solve its "weight problem" to an extent..Am i correct?

I love the zma.But its out of my budget.Plus people tell me its spares cost a bomb.
